If you were wondering where you should spend your old age, Switzerland wouldn’t be a bad bet.

The home of good chocolate, holey cheese, and the man who brought flat-pack furniture to the world, is the best place for older people to live according to a new report from HelpAge International and the University of Southampton.

The Global AgeWatch Index assessed the social and economic wellbeing of the older population in 96 countries around the world, by measuring income, health, education and employment, and the enabling environment.

However, don’t despair. The UK managed to squeeze into the top 10, just ahead of the US.

Women are making a very public stand for self-love.

On August 29, in a busy shopping area in Downtown Boise, Idaho, Amy Pence-Brown stripped down to her underwear, blind folded herself and asked strangers to draw hearts on her.

She was inspired by Jae West, a member of the The Liberators International group, which raises awareness of social issues. Jae stripped off in the middle of Piccadilly Circus, on a Saturday, last month.

They’re not doing it because they’re exhibitionists – both have struggled with self-esteem issues. They’re doing it to encourage others to love their bodies.

In response to Jae’s experiment, Amy wrote… Read the full story

Drunk in love. (Picture: Youtube/Justin Willman)

Listening to a couple’s ‘how we met’ story is rarely much fun, let’s be honest.

Mostly because you’re just listening to their own weird in-jokes, and they’re getting all lovey-dovey, and you kiiind of feel like you’re intruding just by being there.

Which is why couple Justin Willman and Jillian Sipkins decided to do their own much more awesome and entertaining version.

Made especially for their wedding guests, the happy couple created a hilarious video retelling the journey of their relationship, told Drunk History style – the Comedy Central show that sees comedians getting hammered, attempting to narrate a historical event, and having some actors performing their words.

Justin and Jillian settled in with a bottle… Read the full story

Who knew? (Picture Linden Gledhill)

When science meets art, great things are made.

Photographer and biochemist Linden Gledhill has created a stunning photo series using macro photography, which shows what butterfly wings look like up close.

It’s blowing our minds a little bit, because who KNEW that each delicate butterfly wing is made up of thousands of teeny tiny petal type mini wings?

We’d never really thought about it, to be honest. But we’re glad this mystery has been brought to light. Because now we know that each butterfly wing is really, really beautiful.

Studio shot of notebook with list of things to do
Don’t bother turning your head upside down – there’s nothing interesting on this list

You may not have noticed, but we at Metro.co.uk love a good list.

If a blog post doesn’t begin with a number, does anyone read it?

Well, yes, of course they do, but there’s nothing quite like reading a good list. Apart from making a good list, which is the reason why the human race was created.

How would we get through our day without a list of things to tell us what to do? Lists allow us a sense of accomplishment, even if it’s putting a tick beside the words, ‘get milk from shop’.

But some list-makers make more lists than others. This post is… Read the full story

Breathe easy – your porn habit’s not making you hate women (Picture: Getty Images/METRO/mylo)

Researchers from Canada’s Western University have posed the question: Is pornography really about ‘making hate to women’?

They were challenging radical feminist theory, which suggests porn furthers the subordination of women by training viewers to see women as little more than sex objects that men have complete control over.

Let’s be clear that not all feminists are against porn – there’s even a rise in feminist porn makers including veteran directors Erica Lust and Jacky St James.

But back to the study, published in The Journal of Sex Research.

You know when you don’t just like someone, but you like like someone?

Well, Tinder’s now got that covered.

Because apparently just a yes or no option isn’t cutting it these days.

Introducing the ‘Super Like’ – the option where you can swipe up to let a special someone know they stand out from the crowd.

People will only get one Super Like a day – so you know that if someone’s used it they are legit into you.

You can tell if someone has Super Liked you because their profile will have a blue footer when you view it.

This super-dramatic film kind of explains it all:

A new mum’s hilarious, yet desperate, note asking people to avoid knocking on her door and waking her newborn twins has now been liked over 43,000 times by sympathetic mums.

Natasha Butler from Norwich posted a picture of her warning note to the Unmumsy Mum Facebook page (where mums document all the sh*ts and giggles of childbirth) earlier this week, writing: ‘My small “No salesmen etc” sign is ignored so I’m trying this…..’

Her new, slightly more direct, note advised: ‘Twin boys asleep. Only knock on this door if: a) you’re Gary Barlow; b) I’ve won on the premium bonds; c) someone has died. Thanks x’

Now fellow mums are posting their own advice for any would-be callers.

Ah, the weekend trip to Ikea with the other half. Destined to end in a massive argument, or a boot-full of potted plants and stuffed snakes.

It’s the true test of any relationship.

But now one lone joker is hoping to put a smile on harassed shoppers’ faces by trolling his local Ikea with fake customer reviews.

Author and all-round internet prankster Jeff Wysaski, also known as Imgur user obviousplant, posted pictures of his in-store reviews yesterday and they’re basically everyone’s internal monologue as they make their way, interminably slowly, through they ‘no way out’ marketplace of doom.

Yes, it’s been years since September signalled the return of 8am starts and a set of new subject notebooks.

But that doesn’t mean that ‘back to school’ feeling has magically disappeared.

Nope, September will always kind of feel like a time for new beginnings, and fresh ideas, and feeling a little bit dismal about returning to work after months of sunny weekends away and going to the park for lunch (basically the same as a 6 week holiday, right?).

Which means it’s the perfect time and excuse to buy a tonne of fancy new stationery to jazz up your working day.

Because a sassy pencil set makes a 9 to 5… Read the full story

A woman from Dublin is to have a giant ‘breast-sized’ tumour removed from her back after living with it for over a decade.

According to a British Medical Journal case report published last week, the 46-year-old woman arrived at a clinic in Dublin with a growth on the right-hand side of her back, which measured 19cm in length and 6.7cm wide.

It had been growing for around 10 years, but had increased considerably in size over the last three, although the patient said it was painless.

Dr Tunde Abdulsalam, who provided the case report, described the tumour as ‘impressive’, saying it was firm to the… Read the full story

cats galore book puts cats in famous works of art
The Purr of Venus (Picture: © 2015 The Estate of Susan Herbert)

How to take classic art into the internet age: just add a bunch of cats.

Before her death in 2014, late artist Susan Herbert spent years adding animals into iconic cultural works, from slotting meerkats into Sleeping Beauty, to giving La fanciulla del West a raccoon-themed makeover.

But her main focus was always cats. Cats in Hollywood, cats in paintings. Cats everywhere and anywhere.

Now, there’s a book made up entirely on her cat-loving brilliance. Cat Galore is the first collection of all of Herbert’s cat works in one book. It’s brilliant, obviously, because cats plus famous stuff can only be a wonderful thing.

The 320 page book features a… Read the full story
