Bengali flavours hold a special significance for me when it comes to sweets.

One of my favourite pastries is Narkeler Shomsha (coconut parcels) – particularly the ones my mother makes.

Almond and cardamom biscuitChristmas baking recipe: Bangladesh-inspired almond and cardamom biscuits

These fried pastries are filled with coconut sweetened with molasses or jaggery, an unrefined sugar with a butterscotch flavour.

The deliciously soft filling is fragrant with cinnamon, cardamom and bay leaf.

To me, these spices mean Narkeler Shomsha are not just irresistible goodies on Eid, but are also perfect for the Christmas holidays.

My re-invented recipe brings a taste of… Read the full story

Have you been the victim of a d*ck and dash?

Oh, dating trends. We do love it when the appalling state of our love lives gets a catchy new name.

We’ve had stashing, submarineing, marleying, breadcrumbing, and a whole load more fun terms to describe people f***ing us over.

And now, it’s time to talk about the dick and dash.

The dick and dash is not a new thing. Also known as the hump and dump, or hitting and quitting, the act has been around since the dawn of sex-having – but it’s now getting attention in the grand world of internet… Read the full story

Apparently loads of pregnant women are smoking weed to help with morning sickness

Morning sickness can be utterly debilitating.

Rather than being just a cheeky chunder, it can involve feeling wretched for months, unable to keep anything down and lacking the energy to go about your life.

Which is why many mums are prepared to do just about anything to curb nausea.

Including, apparently, getting high.

New research suggests that more and more expectant mums are smoking weed to help with morning sickness in California, where the herb is legal.

Researchers looked at the Cali health care system database for 318,000 pregnant women and found that between 2009 and 2016, marijuana usage has increased from 4.2% to 7.1%.

It’s Christmas, which means many of us are making ‘bad’ choices with food.

I say ‘bad’ because you’ve got naysayers coming at you from all angles reminding you just how many calories are in your Christmas dinner, but really, for most of us, this gluttony is capped at a few days, and what’s a few days in the grand scheme of life?

However, while we’re grown adults and free to make these brief ‘bad’ choices for ourselves, we shouldn’t be doing the same for our pets.

It’s tempting to slip the dog a few extra goodies to help them feel part of festivities, but you’ve got to make… Read the full story

Seven men open up about what it’s like to have depression

0

According to Men’s Health Forum, 12.5% of all men in the UK are suffering with a mental health disorder.

They’re nearly three times more likely than women to become alcohol dependent – and are more likely to use illegal drugs.

Men are less likely to access psychological therapies, with only 36% of referrals to mental health specialists being men.

This leaves them feeling lost and alone – feeling as if nobody can help them. And so things are taken to the extreme. Just over three out of four suicides are by men. Suicide is the largest cause of death for men under 35.

This needs to change.

Depression affects people of any age or gender. It doesn’t matter whether you’re rich or poor, confident or anxious. It’s crippling and life-consuming. People need to remember this when it comes to men’s mental health.

Suffering with a mental illness is not unmanly, nor uncommon. There simply needs to be more conversation around men’s mental health to encourage… Read the full story

It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been vegan, your views are still valid

Vegans get a load of schtick for wanting to live their own ethical lives.

And nowhere is this more evident than at the dining table on Christmas Day.

There you are, fork poised waiting to tuck into a delicious nut roast when some relative or family friend decides to question why you’ve turned your back on your old omnivorous ways.

‘Of all the people, you’re the last person I’d ever expect to go vegan!’ my neighbour said to me at Christmas.

‘I can’t believe how defensive you’ve become about it.’

And I was only defensive because my dad had just poured all my leftovers into a massive bowl of stuffing, roast pork and… Read the full story

WRONG! (Picture: Getty)

There are certain things it’s incredibly important to know how to do properly, like CPR, the Heimlich manoeuvre, and being able to swim.

Another absolutely essential life skill is knowing how to cut cheese properly.

You might think it’s just a case of wielding the nearest knife and stabbing it into your chosen block of solidified cow juice, but nah. There’s an art to it, according to the domestic legends over at the Good Housekeeping Institute.

‘An oozing brie, veiny blue, and tangy cheddar cheeseboard is the perfect way to round off a festive feast,’ says the Good Housekeeping Institute.

Dead vagina syndrome

2017 was a tough year for vaginas.

But while the rest of us were marveling at the idea of cucumber cleanses and sticking wasp nests in our vag, some people were out there skipping the trends and shoving whatever they fancied into their genitals instead.

Data from emergency room visits, pulled by the US Consumber Product Safety Commission, has revealed some of the strangest things doctors had to remove from vaginas in 2017.

These strange and wonderful things include headphones, a candlestick, and a bike reflector. Wow.

Now, to be clear, while we can titter away at what… Read the full story

‘I start the day by waking up at 6am and drinking hot water and lemon right away.’

That’s how all the health bloggers and beauty influencers say they live their lives. It’s the tip that’s been in every women’s and teen’s magazine we can remember. It’s the one thing we committed to in the hopes that it would turn us into adults with our sh*t together.

But it turns out that drinking hot water with lemon first thing in the morning is not that great of an idea. Damn it.

Mental health affects almost every aspect of our lives, from personal relationships to work performance, and while we hate to be the bearers of bad news, your mental health might also be responsible for those stubborn pimples or dry patches on your skin.

Experts agree that stress, anxiety, depression, and other psychological conditions might be an underlying – and underdiagnosed – reason for common skin issues like acne, rosacea, psoriasis and premature ageing.

Oh, mums. They mean well, but they are quite often silly sausages.

The good news is that their occassional oversights provide us with plenty of joy. Remember when a mum brought home nice floral cushion covers that were in fact decorated with a penis print? Good times, good times.

This time around in ‘mums doing a funny’ news, one mum managed to buy her a daughter a thermos with a naughty word on it.

You see, this particular mum decided that to make her daughter’s gift of a YETI Rambler thermos extra special by getting one with her initials monogrammed on the side.

Sweet, right? Except there was one… Read the full story

If you were born pre-internet then you will know that there was no better way to spend a rainy Saturday afternoon than playing a board game.

(If you have never known anything but the internet then the idea of entertaining yourself by moving plastic counters around a cardboard sheet is going to seem very, very strange.)

You probably still have one or two board games kicking around the back of a cupboard somewhere, the cardboard cover ripped, half the pieces missing and the rules long since lost.

Even so, just the sight of one cherished childhood board game is as potent as the smell of your mum’s cooking… Read the full story

The first two things I noticed when I moved to London were a) there are always chicken bones on the street and b) someone is always, always, always eating fried chicken on the bus.

We’re a capital that loves fried chicken – even vegans are into it.

But, if you’re feeling a bit poorly, or you’re just not in the mood for food, the pungent smell of the Colonel’s (or local chicken shop’s) secret recipe can be a bit much. There’s often tutting and a lot of passive aggressive tweeting about the matter.

Bringing smelly chicken on the bus is just not a socially acceptable… Read the full story

Nurses at a hospital in Thailand went the extra mile in celebrating the Year of the Dog – by dressing its newborn babies up as puppies.

Babies fresh from the womb at Paolo Memorial Hospital Chokchai 4 in Bangkok were dressed up in blue or white crochet hats with dog ears, and matching bottoms, complete with tail.

They then had a photoshoot – with the parents’ permission – and parents were gifted framed photos.

Nurse Pilaiporn Kondee told Reuters that some families even gave birth there specifically because of the puppy photoshoot offer.
