People are concerned about the message Next’s ‘Happy girls are the prettiest’ T-shirt sends to kids

Twitter users have raised concerns that this Next T-shirt is equating attractiveness with happiness (Picture: Next)

Next has come under fire for selling a long-sleeved T-shirt proclaiming ‘Happy girls are the prettiest’, targeted at girls aged between three and 16.

The quote is a shortened version of a famous comment by Audrey Hepburn. ‘I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong,’ she said. ‘I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day, and I believe in miracles.’

While the sentiment is well-meaning, some have argued that it implies unhappy girls are unattractive, putting pressure on children and young teens who suffer from mental illnesses.

Twitter user Eleanor Pugh-Stanley was the first to highlight the negative implications.

Water, water, everywhere.

So Nasa believe they’ve found flowing water on Mars. Whatev’s*

A whopping 71 per cent of the Earth’s surface is water, and some of it is pretty spectacular.

And few people are as good at capturing Earths magnificent aqua as German photographer Bernhard Edmaier.

Using his training as a geologist, the award-winning photographer has captured dreamy images of our planet’s water in all its incarnations, from the frozen landscapes of Greenland, to the deep blue depths of the Indian Ocean.

Check out these stunning images from his new book, Water.

* Sorry Nasa – great work and all.

With students starting university for the first time or heading back after the summer break this month, you might find yourself thinking nostalgically back to your own memories of student life.

They say that your university years are the best of your life, when the most you had to worry about was whether you had enough money for yet another night out with your friends.

If you went to university in Southampton then you’ll know about the constant rivalries between the University and the Institute, but also that it had everything you needed with a great nightlife, good shopping and a short journey to the beach.

Here are 22 things you’ll only know if you went to university at Southampton Institute:

Who DOESN’T want a wall of rainbow butt lamps?

Well that dream can now be made real, in your very living room, thanks to Slap It, a small London-based design company and its line of tactile bum lights.

The glowing ars* orbs can be placed on table tops, or mounted on the wall, so you can ‘experience the euphoric, irresistible urge to ‘Slap it’ time and time again.’

Oh yes, that’s the other thing. The lamps can only be turned on by slapping, pinching, or gentle cupping.

So much monies.

If you’re looking for a cheap pad to rent in London, we’re afraid you’re out of luck (shocker)… if this rent map of the city is anything to go by, at least.

The map, which was created by Thrillist, shows the average rent* in London by tube station, which is quite frankly genius, not to mention actually practically helpful.

* Thrillist worked out average rent by using data from Find Properly to calculate the median cost to rent a one-bedroom flat within a kilometer of each station, for four weeks.

*Sings* ‘Through the keyhole…’

When a little birdie told us Ricky Gervais was selling his London pad on Zoopla, we were intrigued (we can’t resist a cheeky ‘through the keyhole’ you see).

And we certainly weren’t disappointed.

Because Ricky’s soon-to-be former London house is quite frankly DREAMY.

The pimped out Victorian house in North London is set across four floors and features four bedrooms (with a huge dressing room attached to the master bedroom, natch), two reception rooms, a breakfast room, basement gym, golf drive and ozone swimming pool.

No matter how much experience you have, job interviews are never fun.

You spend countless hours preparing your standard responses, researching the company and the role. Yet, on the actual day it doesn’t always pan out the way you had hoped.

Instead of immaculately gliding into your interview room, and answering every single question in a flawless manner, you find your voice going croaky and your stomach churning. Great.

This is why you should be eating your banana peel

you should eat edible banana skins and peels
Yup, the skins are edible after all (Picture: METRO/Getty)

Banana peel is not just a timeless comedy prop, it’s an overlooked nutritional goldmine.

That’s right – you can actually eat all your banana, from the flesh inside to the very last piece of skin – which is not only less wasteful, but good for you too.

The thought of chomping down on the tough, yellow skin may be off-putting, but it’s worth it: the skin is full of even more of the good stuff that banana flesh contains, like potassium, magnesium and fibre.

Plus it’s jam-packed with tryptophan, which is key in creating serotonin – the chemical that can help alleviate depression and assist with healthy sleep.

Posting the picture on Reddit, Scott Martin commented: ‘Life comes and goes, but it’s always beautiful.’

He went on to explain that his grandfather had sadly passed away a month earlier, just missing the chance to meet his great-granddaughter, and added: ‘I think my grandmother here has been holding on for this moment.

‘This was one of the best days of my life, I think it was up there for her, too.’

It’s Banned Books week, which means it’s time to mock that sub-section of society who haven’t quite realised that the best thing you can do to encourage someone to read a book is to ban it.

Some books that have been historically banned make sense, in a way. You can see why early 1900s society weren’t quite ready for sexually explicit books like Lady Chatterley’s Lover and Tropic of Cancer. But some are frankly mystifying. Here are some of the weirdest books to have been banned – and the ridiculous reasons behind them.

Introducing our favourite eBay model. She’s 94-years-old and she could sell you anything.

Literally anything. But mostly things carved out of wood and antique weapons.

She is the aunt of prolific Bulgarian eBay seller retrooobg and she’s regularly called upon to add a little attitude to her nephew’s listings.

And now may finally be her chance to shine after Redditor danthoms posted his favourite modelling shots to Imgur over the weekend.

Ask her to hawk a hand-carved antique wooden plate dish tray and she’ll do it wearing a jaunty straw hat and a smile.

National charity Crohns and Colitis UK are using the great hashtag #GoodDaysAndBad to raise awareness of the seriousness of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Followers of the charity are sharing their montages of photographs of them on their worst days and their best to show the effects of this chronic lifelong illness that has times of remission and flare ups.

I was inspired to share my own photos, a condition like IBD is an invisible illness and so it is hard to explain to people that though I may look fine on the outside, inside I am in pain, bleeding, on medications, needing surgery and struggling mentally and emotionally.

She runs around 25 miles a week – or more, if she’s in training for one of her ultramarathons (that’s any race over 26.2 miles). She recently completed a 50K (31 mile) trail race in Georgia.

She wants to prove that being fat is no barrier to being fit.

Or in her words: ‘You gotta just DO YOU. Be skinny, be fat…whatever. Just run.’
