Gin is the most disgusting alcoholic beverage – here’s why we all need to stop drinking it

Gin is the worst drink ever - here's why
(Picture: Getty/Metro)

In a very gin-centric week, people up and down the country have been panicking about the reported shortage of the spirit while also getting excited at the prospect of a gin advent calendar.

And, while all around me people have been losing their sh*t in various ways, I couldn’t be more confused. I had thought that it was commonly accepted that gin was the scourge of the alcohol world but somehow, whilst I have been naively drinking cocktails that DON’T taste of Dettol, its popularity has snuck up.

Before gin starts to take over the world, it’s time we held our hands up, hung back on the enthusiastic cucumber slicing and just saw the turpentine-esque… Read the full story

How parenting advice ends up as global news in 10 simple steps

As soon as I became pregnant, I realised that babies and children are one issue on which Everyone Has An Opinion.

And so many of those opinions come from social media.

Often, that’s great. I love the baby-focused Facebook groups where you can go for practical advice and others’ experiences.

But they also often host daily eruptions between one parent or another. People get mad, thrust their views where they are not wanted, people get upset.

The erupting storm usually looks a little something like this…

1. Someone posts something ridiculous.

UNDERSLEPT PARENTS + SOCIAL MEDIA = MADNESS

At her wedding earlier this month, bride Greta Hokanson saved a special dance for the man who had saved her life almost a decade ago.

In 2006, at the age of 16, Greta was diagnosed with leukemia and told she wouldn’t survive unless she had a bone marrow transplant.

After joining the bone marrow registry, she got the news that they’d found her a match – a 44-year-old man from Arkansas.

Greta chose to go ahead with the major surgery and finally got to thank her ‘hero’ in person a year later.

Some of us have a little cake shelf spilling over the top of our jeans. Some of us have a whole pattiserie down there.

And while it means we can do a mean truffle shuffle, there are some daily struggles all us lil’ muffins will understand.

1. Like when your waistband feels like it’s crushing your major organs.

2. And the sexy imprint it leaves when you strip off.

3. Eating too much for lunch and discreetly undoing your top button at your desk.

4. Then forgetting and wandering round the office with your trousers undone. FML.

The world will never be the same (Picture: Getty/METRO)

Poor Kate Middleton. She just can’t win.

If she wears another samey navy blue dress or demure grey gown, everyone rolls their eyes, shakes their head at her fringe (it’s not even a blunt one. She couldn’t do a dramatic hair change properly, FFS), and wishes she would take some bloody sartorial risks.

But if she dares to try something with even a hint of an edge, she’s in trouble.

And we’re not even talking anything provocative or avant-garde. Last night, Kate popped along to the 100 Women in Hedge Funds gala dinner in London, wearing a floral dress by Erdem.

It’s all in our heads. (Picture: METRO/Myles)

Beloved by basic b*tches and the Autumn-obsessed, pumpkin spice lattes are nothing more sinister than a much-hyped sugary drink. No?

WRONG. They are the witches of the hot beverage world, using magic and pumpkin-y goodness to mess with our BRAINS. The horror.

The people over at Business Insider have revealed that natural ingredients, including actual cinnamon, ginger, and allspice, only make up 10% of a pumpkin spice latte’s flavouring. The rest – 90%, for all you not-so-great-at-maths people – is all synthetic stuff and chemicals.

And what’s makes this a little bit scary is that that 90% of your pumpkin spice latte is messing with your… Read the full story

You’d never have to get out of bed again (Picture: Belle Maison)

Reason 67,902 to move to Japan: this amazing piece of furniture, called a kotatsu.

The kotatsu is a traditional Japanese table, which comes covered with a blanket and has a heater placed underneath.

Many buildings in Japan lack insulation and rooms are heated separately, so the kotatsu acts as a handy centralised heat source when it’s chilly.

In fact, it’s tradition for the whole family to gather around the kotatsu to talk, eat, play games and generally hang out.

This shop makes doughnuts out of mashed potatoes and we don’t quite know how to feel

Usually, we stick firmly to the philosophy that anything involving a doughnut must be a wonderful thing.

But today we just don’t know how to feel. Because a shop in Portland is selling doughnuts made out of mashed potatoes.

Could they be good? Is this a horror of the epic food mashup genre? Do we all need to keep potato-y goodness and doughnut joy separate? We just don’t know.

For their part, The Holy Donut say that adding mashed potato to their dough makes it extra light and fluffy, creating doughnuts that are crispy on the outside but melt in your mouth once you bite into them.

Grow up, dude. (Picture: METRO/myles)

Oh hey. Remember the other day when everyone on the internet was very, very angry at William Lloyd, the man who wrote an article for The Tab explaining why he refuses to go down on women?

Well, his ex-girlfriend has just responded to his claims, and basically says he’s a liar, is being a bit of a dick for not trying, and is, frankly, just not that great at giving head.

Jesus. This is the most awkwardly public post-breakup interaction we’ve ever seen. We love it.

Brooke Purvis is planning on burning his entire student loan.

Not because he’s loaded and watched Wolf of Wall Street one too many times, no this guy is doing it in the name of art.

Which still sounds like a d*ck move, because there’s a whole load of students that could really do with that money.

But then again so could Purvis.

He’s a mature student who came to study art at London’s Central Saint Martins being caught graffitiing.

It cost him 18 months on bail, a big fine and his job as a cab driver.

If you thought The Hangover was messy, you ain’t heard nothing yet.

Ok guys, we won’t lie, we’re not entirely sure what’s going on here… but here’s what we do know…

A girl who goes by the name Zola (although actually on twitter her name is Aziah King), has sent the internet into a frenzy with an epic 148-tweet story.

The tale is a pretty dark on involving prostitution, abuse and murder, but as it starts as a road trip between two new friends, it’s been dubbed ‘A Wild Weekend in Florida’ – which tbh, doesn’t even nearly cover the events that take place.

Halloween is almost upon us – a time of ghouls, monsters and superstitions.

Some of the famous ones – and those viewed with the most scepticism – are already being celebrated.

This week has brought Black Cat Day – that’s right the superstition that seeing a black cat brings bad luck is so widespread that there’s a day dedicated to spreading awareness about the animal.

Tina comes out to her mum every time she visits her (Picture: ABC)

A trans woman has come out to her elderly mum, who has dementia, hundreds of times. But, her mum’s reaction is always the same. Total love and acceptance.

Tina Healy finally came out as a transgender almost three and a half years ago to her partner and family. She had wanted to transition for many years, but kept her feelings quiet for the sake of her four children with former wife Tess.

After coming out to each of her children individually, Tina really wanted to tell her mum, but mum suffers from dementia and the family was worried the news would be too much for her.

Well done internet (Picture: Twitter)

Menstrual products are still considered a ‘luxury’ item after MPs voted against scrapping the controversial ‘tampon tax’ earlier this week.

Women will continue to pay five per cent VAT on their Lil-Lets because they’re apparently ‘non-essential, luxury’ items. You know, like private jets and exotic meats.

Yep. It’s such a treat when we get to splurge on Tampax once a month, isn’t it?

Thankfully, the people of the internet have responded accordingly.

Some are adding a new box of Tampax Pearl to their Christmas list as we speak #FingersCrossed.

Yes. We want these. (Picture: Felissimo)

Fortune cookies are seriously underrated.

First off, the actual biscuit part is delicious, if it’s a good fortune cookie. And secondly, there’s a little bit of paper revealing your fate. No other biscuit option can compete.

But the one thing better than a slip of paper predicting your future? Tiny kittens. Made of cookies.

Yep, someone’s finally started making fortune cookies hiding little kittens inside, made of more fortune cookie goodness. The kitty cookies are called Dagashi Nyanko Kaurenbo, which translates, adorably, to ‘Hide-and-Seek Kitty Cookies’.

Aww, isn’t nice that people are feeling festive?

Data from Pornhub (created in collaboration with MIC) reveals that people aren’t happy to just get off without getting into the spirit of the season. It’s October, people. The only thing that’s worth getting excited over is pumpkin spice lattes and sexy goldfish costumes.

In October last year, scary Pornhub searches jumped up by a massive leap compared to previous months. Not scary in the usual Pornhub way, but in the theme of Halloween.

Topping the searches were the generally festive ‘Halloween’, ‘Halloween costume’, and ‘trick or treat’, which all sound like great fun.
