In the build-up to my recent completion of the Toronto Waterfront Marathon, I found myself experiencing so-called ‘tapering madness’.

For the unversed, tapering is the period of time after you reach the peak of your training in the run up to race day.

Athletes look forward to it. But, well, a tapering runner can be – shall we say – a slight challenge for friends and family.

Here are the signs someone is in the midst of tapering madness, and a few tips no how to handle them.

Why looking silly on Halloween is so much sexier than looking hot

Sexy Halloween costumes, Halloween 2015
Is a Cheeto hotter than a sexy minion? (Pictures: Rex/yandy.com/Myles Goode)

Halloween, this year, seems to have come with a whole new level of costume fever – while fake blood and zombie make-up is still a ‘thing’ – these days, the costume du jour, for women hitting the streets on fright night, is a sexy version of, well, just about everything.

From classic French maids to goldfish (yes, really) this year, it’s less about looking spooky and more about looking like you’re a strip-o-gram circa 1991.

Now, make no mistake, I like a reason to dress up as much as the next girl, and given the choice between a giant piece of Lego and a bunny girl, I’d go for the latter.

When Leigh and James Clark decided to tie then knot this September, they didn’t want the wedding to be all about them.

So they added one simple request onto their wedding invites: ‘If you are so inclined, please do a random act of kindness sometime between now and the wedding and use the hashtag #kindleigheverafter on social media.’

Leigh told metro.co.uk: ‘We wanted our wedding to be very reflective of our personal style.

It’s the spookiest time of the year, and we Brits have a very unique way with the Halloween.

Halloween is the perfect bridging of festive events after the launch of PSL, and before Bonfire Night. A celebration that wasn’t always that appreciated here in the UK, has now taken on a life of its own, and is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. Soz Halloween haters.

1. The grumbling

When it comes to Halloween you either fall into one of two camps; an appreciator or a grumbler. Grumblers are characterised by constantly muttering about this American tradition infiltrating our British isles, and refusing to open doors to trick or treaters. Kill joys.

2. The excitement

Or if you an appreciator, then… Read the full story

The key to a great Halloween costume is working with your strengths and weaknesses, not against them.

That’s the lesson everyone should learn from Mahle, the husky who’s embraced her missing leg to take on a superb pirate costume.

Kelsey Dyer adopted Mahle about a year ago, after the husky’s previous owners dropped her as a puppy and broke her leg.

Mahle had a cast put on her leg, but her second owners didn’t realise the leg needed to be checked as it grew. By the time she was taken to the vet it was too late.

Someone call that guy who popped the question to a burrito. We’ve found his perfect match (other than, you know, an actual tortilla).

Only thing is, she’s taken. And this love is eternal, like a never ending circle of doughy, cheesy goodness.

19-year-old student Nicole Larson is ready to make a commitment. She’s tying the (garlic dough) knot with her true soulmate: pizza.

And sticking to tradition, she’s shared the news with a romantic photoshoot in the park, shot by her friend and photographer Miriam Ott.

They’re a little bit cheesy, but isn’t that what love’s supposed to be?

Nicole’s engagement album has now been shared… Read the full story

These princesses definitely don’t need saving.

Illustrator Jessica Madorran has thrown her hat into the ‘Disney princesses, reimagined’, ring, this time giving our favourite Disney women badass makeovers.

Turns out Disney princesses never needed princes and knights to come in and battle for their safety. They just needed some gigantic weapons.

Jessica told Cosmopolitan: ‘These women may be princesses, but that doesn’t mean they’re powerless! [They] are truly strong characters in their own right […] and definitely cannot be considered damsels in distress.’

If all the photos clogging up your Instagram feed aren’t enough evidence, here’s some cold hard figures to prove that yes, the world really has become selfie-obsessed.

A new study from Intel and Lineage Labs reveals that millennials take an average of at least six selfies, every. damn. day.

That’s more than 2,000 selfies a year.

Researchers interviewed 1,000 Americans over the age of 18 about their photo-taking habits, to find out exactly how much of an epidemic the plague of selfies has become.

Virsaviya ‘Bathsheba’ Borun-Goncharova has been beating the odds since before she was born.

When she was pregnant, her mother Dari was told her child would never survive, however six-years later her bright and beautiful daughter is still fighting on.

In fact, it’s fair to say that the she’s quite the little warrior.

Virsaviya suffers from a condition called Pentalogy of Cantrell, a rare congenital disorder which effects less than one in a million births.

Symptoms and severity of the disorder vary greatly, but in Virsaviya’s case it means that both her heart and intestines are outside of her chest and abdomen.

Jess from Zola’s story speaks out, basically claims the whole story is wrong

Oh jeez!

Just as we FINALLY got our heads around Zola’s story (well, sort of), Jess has spoken out and basically claimed the whole thing is incorrect.

For those who don’t know (like seriously, where have you been?), Zola’s story is the epic 148-tweet tale of what happened when two strippers – Aziah (aka. Zola) and Jess – took a trip to Florida.

The saga, which has taken the internet by storm, is a sordid story of stripping, prostitution and murder, and casts Jess – who Zola charmingly refers to as ‘white b*tch’ – in a rather unflattering light.

11 things people with migraines are sick of hearing
No, it’s NOT just a headache.

I know people mean well. They just want to help. But they clearly don’t appreciate the reality of having a migraine.

1. ‘You mean you’ve got a headache?’

NO! A migraine is not just a bad headache. It’s a whole new level of feeling terrible.

2. ‘Ooh, I think I’m having a migraine…’

Well, you’re managing to walk and talk and continue working so, no, you’re not having a migraine.

3. ‘Walk it off. You’ll feel better once you’ve had some fresh air.’

Walk it off?! I’m not a footballer faking an injury.

4. ‘But you had the migraine yesterday. Why are you still ill?’

Movember 2015 is almost here and I’m already dreading it

As if November wasn’t already a pretty sh*tty month, now we have to put up with men bleating on about moustaches. F*cking great.

Someone in the office has just mentioned that tomorrow is the start of Movember 2015, and it’s brought me out in hives.

Just the fact it’s now a ‘thing’ makes me sad for what this world has become, and more than a little sorry for November, whose name has now be bastardised forever in the minds of 20 and 30-somethings all over the country.

Here’s why ‘once a cheater, always a cheater’ is probably true, according to science

A lot of it’s down to genetics(Picture: HBO)

You know what they say, cliches about cheaters exist for a reason.

Because cheaters really never do win (winning meaning staying in happy, fulfilling relationships), leopards don’t change their spots, and you can pretty safely bet that if someone’s cheated a few times before, they’ll probably do it again.

But it’s not their fault. Sort of. A lot of cheater’s tendencies for infidelity are down to genetics.

And while we can all get a bit ranty about how it’s possible to ignore your baser instincts and do the right thing, the fact is that it really is harder for some people to keep it in their pants.

Here’s how, as superbly explained by AsapSCIENCE.

Game of Thrones

Suddenly the scariest part of Halloween isn’t the costumes – it’s the fact you haven’t got one.

There’s nothing quite as bad as turning up to a fancy dress party without the fancy dress. It’s basically like being the ‘trick’ bit in the trick or treating, knocking on someone’s door to rain on their parade.

But don’t worry, because that doesn’t have to be you. Yes, you’ve left it a bit late, but don’t fear, we’re here to help.

Here are 20 costume ideas that are so simple it’s scary.

Congrats! You’ve taken the plunge, publicly made the commitment, and you now can’t escape doing National Novel Writing Month for the first time ever.

Like many before you, you will struggle through NaNoWriMo in a tornado of confusion, despair, and self-loathing. You will read, loads, for ‘research’. You will realise you are the worst writer that’s ever written. And then realise that actually, you’re the best.

You will wonder if you can get away with giving up, never mentioning it again, and hoping that no one will remember you bragging about it for the first week of November.

You will also turn to Google, and you will search these things.

1.  What are the rules of National Novel Writing Month?*

* For the seventeenth time, just to check.

Happy Birthday November babies!

We’re so lucky to have been born at the best time of the year, surrounded by bright lights and fireworks.

Arriving at the start of party season there’s no question we know how to have a good time.

Here’s 15 reasons why November birthdays are the best.

1. Winter wonderland

Your birthday is during winter at its best – cold enough that you can wear black tights, wooly jumpers, knee high boots or snuggly PJs and silly slippers 24/7 but not yet the biting, grey, dismal freeze of January.

Plus you can celebrate your birthday at the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland with skating, stalls and good cheer galore or, if you’re really fancy, get your skates on at Somerset House.

National Novel Writing Month is back for November – that’s 30 days in which would-be novelists commit to writing 50,000 words of a manuscript – otherwise known as NaNoWriMo.

This is an internet based creative writing initiative and support group that offers advice and help – mainly from the fact that while you sit there scribing alone it’s good to know that thousands of others around the world are doing exactly the same thing.

So if you’ve got a great story idea, some time on your hands and you’re thinking of taking up the challenge of writing your very first novel – because apparently we all have one in us – what can you expect?

Burger and a beer could soon become a thing at Burger King

‘Would you like a beer with your Whopper meal, sir?’

‘Sounds fantastic, I’ll have… Wait, what?!’

It turns out Burger King wants to become the first fast food chain in the country to sell alcohol in its restaurants in the UK.

The chain hopes that from next month, four branches will serve plastic bottles of beer to go alongside orders.

If the applications are approved, you’ll need to head to Newcastle-under-Lyme, Blackpool, Hull and Bury St Edmunds to wash your burger down with a beer.

10 reasons why you should date a vegan

0

Vegans get a bad rap – they’re awkward dinner dates, weird, morally righteous and judgmental. Plus what sort of human being could give up smoked salmon?

Well, you’ve been wrong this whole time.

While chomping on celery and quaffing down quinoa might not be your cup of green tea, there’s nothing to say that vegans are anywhere as bland as their food (also a complete myth).

In celebration of World Vegan Day, here are 10 reasons why vegans make the best partners.

1. First off, vegans are better and more eager in bed.

Studies have found that plant-based diets boost hormone levels and heighten sexual activity.

Vegan foods that are rich in zinc such as avocado, almonds and chickpeas are said to elevate testosterone levels and increase sexual libido.

The dating site OKCupid also found that vegetarians prefer giving oral sex.

Guys, I think we’re done here. Need I continue?

2. They’re passionate in and outside the bedroom.
