So here are the top smartphone myths and the truth behind them.

1) Closing apps improves battery life

Turns out one of the top tips for saving battery is… well. A myth.

According to former Apple Genius Bar employee explains Scotty Loveless, unloading and loading takes a lot out of your phone and battery.

‘When you open that same app again the next time you need it, your device has to load it back… Read the full story

Woman using ASL at Starbucks drive through

We’ll drink to that.

A Starbucks drive-thru in St. Augustine, Florida, is now accepting orders in ASL (American Sign Language).

And in a really cool video posted online you can see the innovative drive-thru in action.

The video, which was posted online by Rebecca King, has now gained over 180,000 shares off her Facebook page.

Writing on Facebook she wrote: ‘Thank you for sharing! It means a lot to me and the deaf community!’

For those wondering why they’ve bothered, this service isn’t nearly as niche as you might think. According to World Federation of the Deaf roughly 70 million deaf people use sign language as their first language or mother tongue.

So many questions… (Picture: Alamy/METRO/Myles Goode)

Now that Christmas is coming up, the champagne (or, let’s be honest, Prosecco) will start flowing.

At some point there will be a half-empty bottle left behind at a party, causing someone to announce the inevitable:

‘Put a silver spoon in the top, that will stop it from going flat’.

Cue a long and spirited debate about whether or not this old-wives’ tale actually holds any scientific value.

Calm down everyone, we have spoken to the experts and the verdict is in.

A transgender man on his tumultuous journey to find his true identity – and his happiness after coming through adversity.

At five months old Liam Klenk was adopted from an orphanage. He has few vivid memories of the few years that follow, but one thing stands out.

By the time he was three years old, Liam, then called Stefanie, knew he was born the wrong gender.

Liam says: ‘I began catching people giving me odd glances because while I was born in a girl’s body, even at that early age I had begun introduce myself to people as a boy.’

The conscious and very clear realisation that he needed to change his gender permanently came after reading a book with short stories about transgender people.

Liam, who was then 20, began to undergo hormone therapy.

Some people just think outside the box.

Like this little guy. And mum couldn’t be prouder.

She posted a picture of his two-part response during his maths test on Imgur earlier this week, writing: ‘This is why my kid is going places.’

And it’s now been viewed over five million times. The internet pretty much agrees with her.

The little boy, who wishes to remain anonymous (sorry), is six-years-old and is in first grade at his school in Georgia.

When he showed his answer to his parents, they burst out laughing.

Apparently, he didn’t understand what was so funny at first. Because he’d just answered the question.

But, after mum explained it, he’s… Read the full story

‘No one should have no one this Christmas’. Including the Man on the Moon.

In case you totally slept through it, you’ll know John Lewis launched its 2015 Christmas ad – Man on The Moon – today.

As usual, the ad which (like it or not) kicks off the countdown to Christmas, has played havoc with our emotions.

But, this year’s ad has a serious message at its heart. John Lewis has partnered with Age UK to drive awareness and support for the elderly people who don’t have anyone to spend Christmas with.

Wake up and smell the cold hard capitalism, people.

It’s that time of year again. No, not the time for peace and goodwill to all men or the time for spending quality time with your nearest and dearest, but the time for cynical retailers (with the help of even more cynical advertising firms) to emotionally blackmail us into shopping in their stores.

Aka. Christmas adverts.

Oh, Hillz. So down with the kids, you’re inventing catchy new sex terms.

Last night, Snapchatter, emoji lover, and general social media whiz Hillary Clinton decided to connect with her followers once again by sharing an article about her fun campaign strategy.

Tweeting ‘guilty as charged’, and a pizza emoji (she’s so hip), Hillary posted a link to an NBC article with the headline: ‘Hillary Clinton’s campaign is powered by pizza, analysis shows’.

this pig really loves autumn leaves

Look. We’re all excited about Christmas.

The John Lewis advert is making us weep. Starbucks’ red cups are here. Costa’s (clearly superior, because they’re 10x more Christmassy) Christmas cups have arrived.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Because as wonderful as it is that Christmas is so close we can almost smell the roasting chestnuts, we all need to remember that something amazing is happening right now, and we’re letting it pass us by: Autumn.

The most magical time of the year. Crisp mornings, conkers, bonfires. And best of all, autumn leaves.

Let us all be Willow the mini pig.

This cheese makes the perfect toastie, according to science

Cheese toastie

The perfect cheese toastie should be golden brown on the outside, and oozy and melting in the middle.

Please stop drooling.

But, how do you achieved cheesy perfection? What cheese should you use? Well, finally, the greatest scientific minds have combined to answer one of the key questions of our time.

The American Chemical Society shared a short three minute video entitled ‘The Science of the Perfect Grilled Cheese Sandwich’ on YouTube this week and after a quick explanation of how cheese is made, they get down to business.

Apparently it’s all about pH levels. They affect the cheese’s texture when heated.

If the pH is too low, the cheese will leak oils when heated, leaving a hard, clumpy mess. If it’s too high, the whole thing will fall apart.

You know when you don’t want to go to sleep, because reality is better than your dreams?

Yeah, that. That’s what’s happening here. Because here in the real world, there’s such a thing as a burrito vending machine.

As brought to light by Delish, the Burrito Box is a vending machine that churns out burritos in 90 seconds.

You press a few buttons, take your pick from a bacon, egg and hash brown burrito, a chipotle chicken burrito, or a grilled steak and cheese burrito, and voila, out pops a cosy little burrito in an orange bag.

A dad has hit back at the ‘small-minded’ person who said his son’s Cruella de Vil costume was ‘completely inappropriate’.

Every year, 9-year-old Liam, who lives in Florida with his two dads and two sisters, really goes for it with his Halloween costumes. He designs them, draws them, and then brings the whole look together. In the past, his muses have included Cleopatra, and Medusa.

But when dad Will Hutt proudly posted a picture of his son as Cruella on Facebook, although the majority of the comments were supportive, he was disappointed by one person’s ‘small minded’ response.

A Facebook user messaged him: ‘I must say completely inappropriate, and I can’t believe a parent would ever… Read the full story

Boris Johnson wants to ban cyclists from wearing headphones
The benefits should be obvious (Picture: Reuters)

Say what you like about cycling (and plenty of people do) – there’s a very good practical reason to spend time, effort and public money supporting it.

The fact is that without getting people out of their cars and controlling numbers on our stressed public transport network, there’s a point at which the UK’s over-crowded cities will simply cease to function.

One heavy rain shower – or several, as we’ve had this week in London – and it’s gridlock on the roads. This will only get worse as the population continues to grow. We’ll hit 70million by 2027, according to ONS stats – that’s a lot of… Read the full story

Karen Lowton, a professor of sociology of ageing & health at the University of Sussex, took to Facebook to tell the world about what she had experienced that day.

Karen, who lives in Orpington, was on her way to a meeting in London, and her poppy pin had dropped from her coat.

After realising she’d dropped it, she noticed a poppy seller in her hometown of Orpington.

‘I asked if I could just have a pin and went to pin my poppy back on my coat any-old-how,’ she tells Metro.co.uk.
