Every time the education budget is discussed or the prospect of making cuts to schools comes to the forefront, the hearts of the thousands of valuable teaching assistants up and down the country plummet a little. And so do the hearts of their teaching colleagues, the parents of children under their care and the children themselves who have been able to flourish due to the TA’s hard work.

Far from being an auxiliary classroom extra, a teaching assistant can be the lifeline to the teacher and the key to unlocking the potentials of students who require a little extra attention.

All children have the right to access education – and some are only able to do so with the help,… Read the full story

But maybe you’re different. We’ve put together the list, put together by Able Skills, that mean we have made… Read the full story

Sometimes, you just need a good news story to remind you that it’s not all bad.

Which is why South African artist Jaco Haasbroek started The Good News project.

He takes classic local news headlines and sayings, and puts a positive spin on them. He then puts them on telephone poles and lampposts to put a smile on other people’s faces.

He got the idea one day when passing a poster about a lost dog – someone had printed the word ‘stolen’ across it.

‘It’s quite sad when someone loses a pet,’ Jaco told Mashable. ‘The idea popped into my head that by simply adding ‘Our Hearts’ at the bottom of the poster, it… Read the full story

Michael Stokes’ inspiring photo series celebrating injured war veterans proved so popular, he crowdfunded an amazing $411,000 (£270,000) to turn them into a book.

Instead of portraying male and female amputee veterans as broken soldiers, these sexy, nude photos celebrate their strength, helping to change the way we see their disability.

Michael initially hoped to raise around $48,000 (£31,500) on Kickstarter for his large-scale art book. He reached that total in under 90 minutes and went on to raise almost ten times that.

Always Loyal will be published on November 15 and will feature pictures of seven new veterans, including female Gulf War amputee veteran… Read the full story

Italian-born Elisa, 28, had a brief kiss with the blonde Scot, whom she nicknamed ‘Scottish Boomerang’ in Revolution on Clapham High Street.

After he walked her home, and they stopped for a burger mid-way (naturally), she gave him her mobile number. But, two weeks later, she hasn’t heard from him.

Not to be deterred, and believing he’s ‘the one’, Elisa has now launched an online campaign using the hashtag #FindingTheScottie to get her Boomerang back.

She’s even gone old-school and… Read the full story

After the success/hilarity of Microsoft’s age-judging tool, we were all waiting with bated breath for the next bit of tech to emerge from the company’s Project Oxford initiative.

And here it is. Emotion recognition.

The new tool lets you upload photos and discover the exact breakdown of all the emotions you’re feeling in the moment.

Once scanned for faces, some posh recognition algorithms will rank eight basic emotions from 0 to 1 (1 meaning feeling that mood 100%): anger, contempt, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, neutral/meh, and surprise.

Obviously, we tested it using Kanye.

A London cocktail bar is serving a whisky cocktail in a hot water bottle and no one can handle it

We want glasses.

A London bar is serving its new whisky cocktail in a hot water bottle and no one can handle it.

Well, to be exact, The Tod, which is made with whisky, apple juice, fig liqueur and rooibus tea, is kept warm in a hot water bottle and served in a slipper.

Not even an ironic slipper.

The frankly absurd, yet annoyingly delicious-sounding, concoction is the work of the Cocktail Trading Company and, let’s just say, it hasn’t gone down very well on Twitter.

Not well at all.

Free the painted nipple (Picture CNBC)

Nipple censorship strikes again, but this time it’s not Instagram.

And it’s not actually a real woman’s nipple.

Nope, this time round American TV networks are finding a famous painting too pornographic to show to the public in its full glory.

One of Amedeo Modigliani’s paintings, from his Reclining Nude series, made the rounds on the news after it became the second most expensive painting ever sold at auction, when a Chinese business man snapped it up for a cool £113 million.

More than one viewer was left confused by the news coverage when CNBC and Bloomberg decided to blur out the breasts and suggestions of pubic hair.

We now want to get married just so we can wear ASOS’ new bridal range.

That’s right folks, ASOS are now making beautiful wedding dresses.

And they’re actually affordable.

Launching in SS16, the collection includes 18 pieces that you’ll probably want to marry more than your groom.

It’s inspired by the 1930s and is full of dresses and structured co-ords in all the pearly tones, lace and satin fabrics a bride could desire.

Or you can do a Solange and opt for an incredible jumpsuit with cape detailing instead.

Everyone, stop saying you’re ‘addicted’ to crisps just because you finished a full can of Pringles the other day. You’re probably not.

This woman, however, is. And she’s tired of people not taking it seriously.

Vera Alberding, crisp addict, has written an article for Munchies documenting her struggles. The struggles of being hopelessly addicted to crunchy snacks.

‘I’ve downplayed it to myself for years,’ she writes, ‘but I think my addiction began the moment I had my first fried sliver of salty goodness.’

(Vera is America-based, so refers to the object of her affections as chips, just to clarify the following extracts)

Answer: a lot. A lot of random crap.

Embarrassed by your selfie stick? No problem (Picture: @mansooon/Twitter)

A Japanese man who was embarrassed using a selfie stick in public, has made himself a ‘selfie arm’ instead. Which isn’t conspicuous at all.

We *think* it’s all tongue-in-cheek but it’s really hard to tell from Google Translate.

Anyway, the man, who, judging by his Tumblr page is some sort of crazy inventor, explained on Japanese site Omocoro that it was the long exposed stick that really got to him.

So, he had an idea.

He sketched it out first.
