You’ll get glitter in places glitter should never go (Picture: Getty)

You’ve been counting down the days and the excitement is just too much.

Christmas Eve should be spent at home all cosy with mulled wine and copious amounts of mince pies.

Instead you just want to celebrate that work is over for the next week and being sober during Christmas just isn’t right, is it?

Plus Christmas Eve doesn’t have the hype like New Year’s Eve, so there’s nothing to lose.

Unfortunately with drinking there are consequences, especially on Christmas Eve.

1. It’s freezing

It’s fricking cold outside and the sexy Taylor Swift eskimo look just isn’t working.

2. It’s empty

For people who prefer their Christmas to be less festive, more unsettling and Kubrick-y: a gingerbread Overlook Hotel.

Genius baker agkeeling has created a four foot wide gingerbread version of the setting of The Shining, complete with tiny gingerbread Jack and Wendy. And an elevator filled with blood. No big deal.

The mysterious creator of the hotel hasn’t gone into much detail on how she made something so incredible – we’re guessing it took a few days – but says that every tiny detail has been considered, from using quinoa for that perfect rooftop texture to the rice krispie maze.

All book lovers have been there. You’re in a shop with a stack of books. You know you should only really buy one or two. Or three, if there’s a three for two deal.

But you just can’t decide which books to abandon. So you stand there, dithering, until you eventually give in and buy all twelve – only four of which you’ll read before you get tempted into a bookshop and repeat the cycle again.

What if there was a bookshop that offered a peaceful, minimalist solution? A place where you didn’t have to decide, because the options were limited?

The English language is amazing, weird and changing constantly.

Over the years different generations have developed different ways of saying things. We’d like to think it says something about the character of each decade – the fact that an emoji was 2015’s word of the year probably shows how much influence mobile phones have over our lives.

But the question is, does the slang you use or used to use say something about when you were born? We want to find out.

We’ve made a quiz below of phrases used throughout the… Read the full story

Does Santa prefer a mince pie and milk? Or a nice pint? (Picture: Getty/METRO)

Every year a debate ripples through the UK: what the heck are you supposed to leave out for Father Christmas on Christmas Eve?

Brandy or a glass of milk? Biscuits or a mince pie? Candy canes? Carrots for the reindeer?

The arguments are intense and impassioned. We’re team mince pie and milk, with a few carrots – Santa can’t drive his sleigh if he’s past tipsy – just FYI.

But take that debate worldwide, and you’ll get an even greater range of preferred Santa snacks. And other non-edible treats. And, um, Guinness.

Ah, a family Christmas. Logs on the fire, gifts under the tree, a hearty meal, and the kids playing happily with their presents all day long while you enjoy a quiet glass of wine or two.

Nothing says Christmas like getting merrily tipsy over a turkey dinner.

If you’re dealing with an annoying family over Christmas, one of the best things to do is to turn all their irritating bits into a fun game. Involving alcohol, because why the heck not (please drink responsibly).

The prime time for classic parental and relative moments is, of course, after the presents have been opened, when you’re all sat around the table catching up on the last year and eating roast potatoes.

So. Here it is. The Christmas dinner drinking game, AKA… Read the full story

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, especially if you’re a cat.

There are Christmas trees to climb, baubles to hunt, angels waiting at lofty heights to wage war with you, not to mention that tantalising pile of freshly wrapped presents your people have left out for you to play with.

And yet, some kitties seem to be beyond such petty games. Their sense of ennui is only overshadowed by their disdain at your attempts to put them in yet another gaudy costume.

Here are 19 cats who aren’t really feline the Christmas spirit:

We’ve been dyeing our hair every colour under the sun this year.

No, really – sunset hair was a big thing in 2015, more on that shortly.

Some of it wasn’t for the faint-hearted. Like glitter roots – that took dedication to the sparkly stuff.

Other looks were slightly subtler, like opal hair which graced shimmering locks on Instagram accounts everywhere.

And while we might not be brave enough to do it all ourselves, we’ve seen a lot of good things happen to hair this year.

For kids today Christmas begins when the Red Cups appear and the John Lewis ad is aired.

They wouldn’t have lived a December 25th without Snapchatting festive emojis to their mates and Instagramming photos of their presents, they only understand Christmas jumpers as ironic expressions and they’ve probably not been forced to sit through a Queen’s Speech.

But parents who wish to look back to a simpler time might want their kids to know just how simple that time was – a time before camera phones, social media and Harry Potter.
