Walk with purpose. (Picture: Getty)

If you’re from a tiny town, heading to a big city can be a little intimidating.

Actually, scratch that. Even if you’re FROM a big city, that city can be intimidating at times. When it’s late at night. When you’re walking through an area you don’t know too well. When you’re walking alone after your brother just told you a scary story about that time he got mugged.

To help us through, Redditors are sharing their best survival tips for life in a city.

Some of them are a bit intense, and probably not necessary if you’re strolling through Soho. But if you’re feeling nervous, they’re all useful to keep in… Read the full story

The best books are secret books. (Picture: Getty)

All book lovers know that choosing a new book to read is the ultimate struggle.

What if you’re missing out on a wonderful book you’ve never heard of? How are you supposed to choose between a dark comedy about British life and a comedic tragedy about British life? It’s impossible, we’re telling you.

Plus, there’s the inevitability of falling into a pattern: reading the same kinds of books, and the same familiar authors, over and over again.

Bringing some mystery and magic back into the equation is Australia-based bookshop Elizabeth’s Bookshop.

8 things not to say to someone with an anxiety disorder

Enough already! (Picture: Getty)

I have Generalised Anxiety Disorder, which basically translates as ‘worry, worry, ooh what if that goes wrong? Worry, MENTAL SOUP aargh’.

The problem for those of us with GAD is that those on the outside have trouble understanding it.

‘Oh, it’s just generalised worry,’ they witter brightly, ‘at least it’s just a general thing and nothing specific! You can just work around it, yes?’

There is no such thing as ‘working around’ GAD.

These are some of the things that bring on my twitchy eye every time I hear them.

1. ‘Why don’t you get a hobby to keep your mind off things?’

Hear my hollow laughter.

So much of my time is taken up with worrying that… Read the full story

Monday 1 Feb is National Sickie Day! Well done us for being so reliably unreliable that scientists have worked out exactly when we are most likely to flake on work.

However, just sometimes, there really are some genuine, almost-entirely-valid reasons why a sickie must be pulled. Trust us.*

1. That meeting

You can’t miss this really important meeting, but you’ll be forced to gauge your eyes out if you have to listen to any more irrelevant chatter and pretend to take notes. It’s a tough call.

You’re likely to be more secure, both financially and emotionally, than you were in your twenties, yet don’t have the midlife panic of your forties.

You’re sorted, stable and know exactly which way you are heading (most of the time), not least of all when it comes to sex.

But confidence isn’t the only difference in the bedroom in your thirties.

Think that a bunk up is the same every decade?

Think again – here are 14 differences between sex in your twenties and sex in your thirties.

15 Reasons We Would be Ugly in the Olden Days (Charlotte Long) Getty / Alamy
(Picture: Metro/Getty/Alamy)

No one likes to believe they’re ugly, but the sad truth is your ancestors would probably think you’re a minger.

Pearly white teeth, golden glow and clean, shiny hair? No thanks.

We’re talking blackened nashers, wee and mouse fur to get this lot going.

Here’s 13 reasons we’d be ugly in the olden days.

1. Black-toothed beauty

In Japan, there was an ancient tradition of dying teeth black, called ohaguro, which was practised until the 1800s.

The ingredients used prevented tooth decay, the shiny black lacquer was considered beautiful and also marked a noblewoman’s coming of age.

It’s not always easy being the biggest sibling.

And things are particularly ruff (sorry) for Butterball, the giant puppy who is twice the size of his brothers and sisters.

Butterball is part rottweiler, part border collie.

He is 11 weeks old but already weighs 7kg.

Meanwhile his siblings, Rosebud and Mudbud, are just half that, despite being the same age and breed.

Butterball and the rest of his litter were found abandoned in a field and taken in by Dogs Trust Ballymena in Northern Ireland.

What little bookworm wouldn’t love this bedroom? (Picture: Kerry Wright)

A mum has created a magical fairytale bedroom for her little girl, filled with characters from children’s stories, to inspire her to read.

Mum Kerry Wright from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, used to make props for Pinewood studios and now works from home setting up her own sculpting and art business, as well as looking after her two-year-old daughter Chloe.

A few months ago, she had an idea for a book-themed bedroom for her daughter.

Although she’s only two, Kerry says her little girl ‘loves thinking she can read books. She sits there with a book upside down and babbles to herself’.

So, with the help of her brother… Read the full story

Don’t tell anyone, but Officer Montgomery is just a big ol’ softie at heart.

Last week, the Florida policeman drove out to a local animal shelter on a routine call – and came home with a new puppy. As you do.

Apparently, it’s an occupational hazard for the kindhearted officer.

Marcus Montgomery explained in a post to Imgur over the weekend that he’d been called out to the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) shelter about threats from an ex-employee.

But, while there, one of the staff showed him a puppy who had been left with nine others in a box… Read the full story

Quiz nights.

They tax brains, empty wallets and ruin friendships.

And, as ever with these things, there are patterns of behaviour – so here are just a few of the things we’ve noticed over the years.

1. Three days before you’re scrabbling to find a team that covers music, sport, food and drink, history and current affairs. You worry about maximum team sizes. You email the organisers. When they’re too busy to respond, you contemplate hiding someone under a table.

2. You engage in a frantic cramming period that encompasses trivia books, Wikipedia summaries and Buzzfeed. Your family fret you’re taking this far too seriously, and… Read the full story

This is what happens to your body when you’re dehydrated

Dehydrated

We all know the feeling of waking up the morning after the night before with a mouth drier than the Sahara. But do you know what it’s actually doing to your body?

First up, dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluid than you take in – the body is affected even when you lose a small amount of fluid.

Common causes include sweating, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, frequent urination, not drinking enough fluids, consuming alcohol (a diuretic), and stress.

While recommendations vary on how much water we should be drinking a day, depending on activity levels, size, age, the NHS advises drinking enough fluid so that you’re not thirsty for long periods, and steadily increasing your fluid intake when exercising and during hot weather.

If not, this infographic from lifestyle blog Fix shows exactly what’s happening to your body.
