Oh you fancy, huh? (Picture: The Painted Lady/metro.co.uk)

The massive nail art trend may have died down a bit over the last few months (explaining why fashion bloggers don’t have their names all over their nails anymore), but that doesn’t mean we don’t want to jazz up our manicure a bit.

Because let’s face it, there are only so many nail polish colours out there. We’re bored.

But we also can’t be bothered with hand-drawing butterflies on our thumbnails.

So we asked the experts over at The Painted Lady in Shoreditch to create a simple, pared-back nail art look that’s actually easy to create.

Here’s how it’s done.

1. Apply a clear undercoat to protect your… Read the full story

This has got to be the best costume ever – but how the hell does it work?

If you’re already getting yourself prepared for this year’s Halloween costume, you may be facing some stiff competition.

Because this guy has got it down to a T.

Showing off his seriously creepy doctor/dead patient get-up, he’s managed to impress a good majority of the internet. But he’s also left them stumped, asking one question: How the hell does it work?

It’s clear to see that the doctor’s legs are in fact his legs, along with the arms of the patient. And, if you look closely, you can see the the ‘patient’ is wearing a mask – and is likely worn to confuse us all even more.

But, whose torso is whose? Most likely, he’s just slouching over. And while it’s probably worth it to show off the incredibly creative costume, we can’t help but feel for him – because he’s going to be experiencing some back pain later.

Redditor iBleeedorange posted a short video to… Read the full story

This is what people look like after 1, 2, and 3 glasses of wine

Most people are pretty specific about what they drink when they’re out for dinner, a night out or perhaps a 3-day-bender.

As long as you know what keeps you tipsy without getting that horrible stomach-churning feeling half way through the night, you’re alright.

Brazilian photographer Marcos Alberti is most fond of the effects wine can have – not on himself, however. No, Marco’s more interested in how it makes other people feel. Generous, we know.

‘There’s a saying about wine, that “the first glass of wine is all about the food, the second glass is about love, and the third glass is about mayhem”, he told Bored Panda.

And from that saying, he… Read the full story

Adorable video of newborn penguins being weighed is the cutest thing you’ll see today

We all know baby penguins are ridiculously cute. Even if you’ve never seen one before. It’s just common knowledge. Probably.

But who’d knew seeing them being weighed could make them ten times cuter?! We didn’t.

Until a video came along, and we watched as they fell off the scales and helplessly waddled around at Chester Zoo – and we couldn’t quite prevent the urge to cry tears over their adorableness. (In the toilets of course.)

This is why your pubes are darker than the rest of the hair on your body

You may have wondered, at least once in your life, why your pubic area is why darker than the hair on your head.

Sure, it’s never been something people really worry about – pubes are pubes, right?

But it turns out, there’s actually a reason why they’re so much darker than the rest of your body hair. And it’s information you need to know. Don’t even deny it.

Basically, the colour of of hair is determined by the amount of melanin (a protein that has colour) in the outer layer of each hair.

For instance, black hair has the greatest amount of melanin – whereas white hair has none at all.

But, there are two types of melanin that compose the variety of hair colours we see – one being eumelanin, which is the darkest type, and the other being phaeomelanin, the lighter of the two.

So, a person’s hair colour is generally a ratio of the two. A… Read the full story

If this isn’t the sweetest proposal ever you’ll have to tell us what is

0

We get it, we see lots of proposals taking place on the internet, being uploaded to social media and shared thousands of times.

For the single people out there looking for their true love, it’s probably torture to watch so much PDA.

And for those who are married, they probably make you think back to your own proposal and you’ll either be totally grateful it wasn’t posted online or ridiculously jealous that yours wasn’t as sweet.

But Simon Mayhew posted his proposal from boyfriend Paul Woodcock onto Facebook and it was quick to receive over half a million views. And so, we had to see why.

Why I’m happy to have no contact with my biological father

My parents split up when I was 6. I don’t really remember it – I don’t remember much of them even being together, to be honest. Only bits.

Like, when I was taught to ride a bike, and I fell from the curb and grazed my knee. And, when I had an outside fancy-dress part to celebrate my fourth birthday. I’d invited the whole class because we had a big garden, and it rained – meaning we had to have the party inside instead, with children fitting the living and dining room dressed as fairies and superheroes.

My parents split up because my mum didn’t love my dad. She admitted… Read the full story

People are cringing at the unfortunate design of this skirt

A picture of a JC Penny skirt has gone viral over the last week – but not for particularly positive reasons.

Well, unless you count dressing like you’ve had your period all the way down your leg as a positive thing, of course.

But, hold off on the ‘periods are natural, stop period shaming!’ comments – because that’s not what’s happening here.

In fact, most people are actually less focused on the bloody awful skirt (excuse the pun) and are more into finding the best joke for it.

The picture of the skirt was uploaded to Reddit’s ‘Crappy Design’ page and has definitely picked up a lot of laughs, and of course, awful, awful puns. Even worse than the above.

The puns were real, people.

Nicole Baxter was left with a large bald patch at the top of her scalp after religiously using Batiste dry shampoo.

Not realising it was the dry shampoo causing the baldness, Nicole went to her GP to discuss her symptoms. As well as the bald patch, she had been experiencing red sores and blisters all over her scalp, as well as a ‘terrible burning sensation’ all over her head, which often meant a lot of discomfort.

Nicole went on to be referred to the dermatology unit in Belfast City Hospital. She was immediately diagnosed with Triangular alopecia – hair loss which effects on area of the head,… Read the full story

How to get kids fit and playing outside more: A guide to games and activities for children

Apparently British kids are staying in as much as prisoners, and they quite like it.

A study found children aged five to 12 spend an hour or less outside per day – less than an inmate’s precious ‘yard time’.

One in five in the UK (and one in 10 globally) ‘never play outdoors’.

Two thirds of parents believe that their children do not have the same opportunities to play as they did as a child.

This creates all sorts of problems; children can struggle to get fit and their knowledge of games and activities is sorely limited

Can words really describe the euphoria you feel when you realise you don’t have to jump out of bed in the morning?

I really, really doubt it.

But with spring around the corner and mornings getting brighter, you may be thinking it’s about time you started getting your arse out of bed to make the most of it.

But you know what I say? If your body tells you that you need to sleep in, then you should sleep longer.

I’ve been taking lie ins on weekends for all of my adult life and it is definitely the best.

Here’s why you should have that much wanted lie in.

Do you always use protection during oral sex? (Picture: MylesGoode/metro.co.uk)

The British Association for Sexual Health and HIV has said that young people need to be more cautious of the risks of contracting STIs through oral sex – and they’re now strongly recommending the use of condoms and dental dams every time we get it on.

This is a great idea in theory. I’d never suggest that we disregard the advice of BASHH, or that we ignore the importance of staying protected.

But here’s the thing: the… Read the full story

This is what happens when you take a joke too far.

This April Fools Day, the staff at the Serpukhov Museum of History and Art in Serpukhov, Russia, decided to play a little prank on the local media.

They wrote up a fake job application from a cat named Maray, who’d been hanging around the museum and acting as an unofficial greeter for the last year.

Maray’s application was simple and to the point: ‘As I am a direct relative of Maraeva [the museum’s ex-owner,… Read the full story

Poor old Fat Vincent is a seven-year-old dachshund with a big problem. He’s obese, and needs to lose weight to drop his cholesterol rate and making getting around a bit easier.

Fat Vincent was taken in by K-9 Angels Rescue after his owner passed away. When he arrived he weighed 17kg, had a dangerously high level of cholesterol, back problems, and difficulty walking around on his little sausage dog legs.

His foster owner, vet Melissa Anderson, knew something needed to be done.

Every year a family of ducks has to be escorted through this school

This school tradition is so much cooler than singing along in Assembly.

Every year students and teachers at Prairie Mountain School in Eugene, Oregon gather together for their annual duck walk, chanting encouragement as a family of ducks makes its way through the halls.

Why, you ask, are ducks traveling through a school each year?

It’s because every year the mother duck lays her eggs in the school’s courtyard – which is boxed in by the school with no way out.
