14 things people still don't understand about anorexia Mmuffin Monika illustration
(Picture: Mmuffin for Metro.co.uk)

I found it very difficult to accept a diagnosis of anorexia, partly because I denied how seriously unwell I was but also because I never thought I was ‘doing anorexia right’.

I never thought I was ‘ill enough’ to deserve treatment.

This was due to a multitude of misconceptions.

I was tortured by the disorder for many years while to the outside world I looked relatively normal.

This is the reality of anorexia.

1. Anorexia is not a lifestyle choice

Nor is it a diet gone wrong.

It’s different for everyone but for me it’s about control.

Controlling my food intake and my weight was a… Read the full story

At the age of 9, Jasmin Britney’s life was changed forever when she was paralysed from the neck down in a car accident.

As she ran across the road to reach the local sweet shop, a car hit her, severing her spinal cord and leaving her with no movement below the chin.

Despite the turn her life has taken though, Jasmin is determined not to let her injuries hold her back.

Instead, she has used them to her advantage, becoming the world’s first quadriplegic human Barbie.

In a bid to show other people with life-altering disabilities that anything is possible, Jasmin spends hours on her hair, make-up and outfits to look as much like Barbie as she can.

She said: ‘My life changed when I was nine years old so I post my pictures online to inspire other people who have spinal injuries or live with debilitating conditions.’

The London Design Festival wants to take over Trafalgar Square for one week, to transform it into a ‘futuristic, fun and free’ course, and they need our help to do it.

The scheme is being crowdfunded on Kickstarter and will see the steps from the National Gallery turned into… Read the full story

We know. This is exciting.

Listen up rebels, this is important.

This summer, a Star Wars pop-up is coming to London – not from a galaxy far, far away, but courtesy of the folk behind Barrel and Forks.

Barrel and Forks specialise in creating immersive dining experiences in ‘unusual and magical’ locations around London.

And, from June 22 to July 1, they’ll be serving up smoking lightsaber cocktails and Tatooine soups to hungry galactic explorers (or, as we call them, Shoreditch hipsters) at a Star Wars themed diner called The Fork Awakens.

Deep down, we all know that cats aren’t our pets. They’re our rulers in waiting.

Cats control all of us, they know they’re so much better than all of us, and we should thank our lucky stars that cats are content with sleeping all day and using us for food, rather than forming an uprising and overthrowing the government.

But inside, all cats believe themselves to be royalty, just waiting for the day they get their crown.

Instagram-famous Maccha the cat, for example, knows she’s a queen. And now she’s got the royal portrait to prove… Read the full story

Expectation vs. reality (Picture: Sh*t Model Management)

If you follow the likes of Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid on Instagram, you’d be forgiven for thinking modelling is all about hanging with Leonardo DiCaprio, swinging from ceilings with Zayn Malik, and strutting through airports on the way to your private jet.

Well, not according to the two working models behind new Instagram account Sh*t Model Management.

The account shares brutally honest and hilarious memes, exposing the truth behind the supposedly glamorous model lifestyle.

Strapline: ‘We all want to quit’.

We’ve walked these streets since we could get out of pram and, as such, have the insider gossip on what’s best to do in this fine town.

Make sure you walk from the Tate Modern to the South Bank

You can do it without leaving the river side.

Grab a coffee and just wander. We love doing that.

Brendon Williams started the movement, showing that sensual photoshoots aren’t just for women. Then Patrick Barry got involved with some farmyard photos.

And now, beardy model Tim has spoken to the hidden depths of our lumbersexual side, posing for photographer Chad Castigliano of Chronicker Photography in a cropped checked shirt, shorts, and suspenders.

Plus an axe and a hard hat, obvs. He’s werking hard.

Don’t stress. It’s never too late to find love. And you won’t even need to swipe your way to the end of Tinder.

Last weekend 93-year-old Miriam Steiner and 90-year-old Harold Sharlin were set up on their first blind date. They met at the Politics & Prose bookshop and café in Washington D.C., where – according to Today – they had lunch and ended up spending the entire afternoon together.

They had a ‘very pleasant’ time.

The pair were set up by Harold’s granddaughter Jenny, who had waited on Miriam… Read the full story

We don’t understand Icelandic but we think they’ve made their point (Picture: IcelandMag)

We all know the hard and fast rules of swimming pool etiquette: no diving in the shallow end, no running, no heavy petting.

However, there are surely some rules that are just unspoken – such as not using the communal hairdryers to blow-dry your scrotum.

That’s a given right?

Apparently not, as an Icelandic swimming pool has been forced to put up posters reminding its male visitors that the communal hairdryers aren’t for use on private parts.

The laminated posters, featuring a gentleman brazenly blow-drying his scrotum – one leg up – with a large red X over his naked torso, were put up by… Read the full story

Mallory Torres has been left full of rage after a photo of her seven-year-old daughter riding on the back of her stepfather’s motorcycle went viral.

The photo, which was taken from her own Facebook page and uploaded to motorcycle-fan group Biker Dad by a fellow motorist, showed her daughter wearing a full set of safety gear including a helmet.

Other adults criticised her parenting calling Mallory and her partner, who are from Texas, by calling them bad parents. Which, obviously, has left them feeling rather angry.

To combat this (and perhaps surprisingly), Mallory created her own post which has gone on to receive over 35,000 shares.

Growing up with sisters is a blessing but like many blessings you will not realise how truly blessed you are at the time.

Cut to your twenties and beyond, when you no longer live under the same roof, and you realise those women are something to be seriously thankful for.

Here are a few things you’ll recognise if you’ve got siblings of the female variety.

1. When you do anything embarrassing you have to tell your sisters about it IMMEDIATELY.

2. After sharing the embarrassing moment, sisters will both laugh and sympathise in equal amounts.

3. As kids you did almost nothing alone. You’d even chat to each… Read the full story

If you had to describe your sibling using just five words, what would they be?

Annoying, favourited, loud, irritating, copy-cat are just a few that come to mind.

Because let’s face it, as much as we do love our siblings deep down, we all know they’re just the worst.

Especially when they’re trying to get you in trouble for something they’ve done.

But now, people are talking about their siblings on Twitter, after the hashtag #SiblingsIn5Words was started at midnight last night by Comedy Central.

So relatable.

When Martha Wallbank discovered her granddaughter had decided to honour her by walking down the aisle on her 100th birthday, she only had one question – could she be bridesmaid?

So, on April 8, not only did Grandma Martha celebrate turning 100, she also became Britain’s oldest – and arguably most glamorous – bridesmaid.
