BBC Food recipes: 10 recipes you should probably download now (just in case)

Everyone needs a chocolate cake recipe. (Picture: Getty)

UPDATE: The BBC has now said that the 11,000 recipes are not actually being deleted. They’ll be archived and BBC Food will disappear, but the recipes will just move over to BBC Good Food.

Crisis averted.

Which means we don’t need to panic about all our favourite recipes disappearing forever, which is nice

. But the whole incident has given us major trust issues. So we’ll be copy/pasting our favourites into an actual, physical recipe book just in case.

Because seriously, who knows which recipes could be lost in the moving process? It’s just not worth the risk.

Australian girl wins right to wear trousers to school after petition amasses 15,000 signatures

Why shouldn’t female students be allowed to wear trousers?’ (Picture: Getty)

‘Why can’t I wear trousers like the boys?’

It’s a simple question. Why can’t female students wear pieces of clothing that let them feel comfortable, run around freely, and do all the stuff that male students do?

Why did Australia’s Our Lady of the Nativity Primary School decline one female pupil’s request to wear trousers to school, simply because of their uniform policy?

These are the questions the parents of six-year-old Asha wanted answered when they created a petition calling for all schools to have legislated dress codes with gender equality.

There aren’t many ways you can go wrong with a humble biscuit.

Even a plain rich tea is plenty satisfying with a nice cuppa. We’d happily take a Garibaldi without complaints. All biscuits are brilliant.

But that doesn’t mean they can’t be better.

Graphic designer Holly Fox has taken the modest biscuit we know and love and transformed it into an art form.

With her trained design eye, love of colour, and impressive icing skills, she painstakingly decorates her biscuits so they’re as visually satisfying as they are tasty.

Just look at these flamingos.

Look, some of us aren’t really into beaches and sunny spots next to palm trees. For us, wanderlust is about mountains, and the Northern Lights, and seeing reindeer.

If you fit squarely into that second group, this is a place you need to know about.

Turns out there’s a massive ice cave – yes, a cave made entirely of ice – in China. At 85 metres deep and 2,300 metres above sea level, it’s the largest ice cave to be discovered in China.

The only rubbish part about a spontaneous, super romantic proposal? You might not be able to capture it on camera so you can show everyone else how adorable your special moment truly was.

Which is what makes this proposal so genius.

Lorenza Pardo and Louis Bruno have been together for five years, ever since they met at university. Lorenza is currently 26 weeks pregnant with their child, so they decided to do a sweet maternity photoshoot to celebrate her bump and their new life together.

Expectations. (Picture: Burger King)

Remember when Burger King announced they’d be making hot dogs, and we were both excited and confused?

Is a hot dog a type of burger? Is it a sandwich? Could Burger King be trusted to make a truly great hot dog?

These were the questions that swam around our hangry minds. And now, one of them has been answered.

Can Burger King be trusted to make a truly great hot dog? Erm. No. No they cannot. Evidence of this: the wildly different reality of Burger King hot dogs versus the glossy sauce-drizzled sausages in the adverts.

Here are the hot dogs in the advert:

All hell broke loose last week when Instagram had some sort of crisis and decided a Microsoft PowerPoint layout (or something extremely similar) was just the perfect look for their new logo.

Instagram users were totally not okay with this change – which came just as soon as we’d all finally got over the fact we now have to turn on some notifications if we want to see our friends’ latest posts. Totally not okay, Instagram.

But thank god, there is actually a way you can backtrack Instagram’s latest change – so that you can once again see the old, basic app design back on your home screen – and it… Read the full story

Why do old books smell so comforting? (Picture: Getty)

True book-lovers know the drill. You head into a library or used bookshop. You find the book of your dreams. You take it home, curl up on the sofa, and open your book.

But before you dive in, there’s one all-important step: holding the book up to your nose and giving it a good sniff.

Because the smell of old books is heavenly. It’s comfort. It’s home. It’s everything we want in life and more. We wish we could find a perfume that smelled just like books. We wish there were candles that would fill out rooms with the scent of libraries.

It’s glorious.

But why do old books smell so amazing? And… Read the full story

A group of students have come up with a cunning plan to help anyone who can’t afford a meal out.

Let’s just take a moment to have a think here. How on earth could anyone possible get a free meal out without some sort of discount code or voucher?

The truth is: you can’t.

Let’s delve deeper. When dining out, what’s the one thing that practically always ensures you’re given your meal free as an apology?

A goddamn hair in your food, that’s what.

And now, these students are cashing in on it.

If there’s one way to get on your teacher’s good side, it’s by using the power of food.

And no, we don’t mean leaving a shiny apple on their desk – because really, who even does that?

No, we mean by baking them a massive cake. There’s no way it can’t get you some extra credit or forgiveness (unless they hate cake that is, in which case, what sort of person are you apologising to, really?).

Take this girl, for example, who had a habit of arriving late to one particular teacher’s class.

Granted, that can be annoying. Especially if it’s happening all the time.

But it seems… Read the full story

How much of your life do you spend having sex? (Picture: Getty/metro.co.uk)

Ever wondered how much of your life you’ll waste vacuuming? Or pairing your socks? Or re-watching episodes of Friends?

Yeah, us too. And it’s pretty miserable.

But one timing stat we hadn’t really considered was how much of our life we spend having sex. Mostly because we’re not really conscious of how long sex actually lasts for us. Getting out a stopwatch or keeping an eye on our phone’s clock feels wrong.

Thankfully, Reebok‘s done the hard record-keeping work for us. In their new study they reveal how much of our lives we spend getting it on. And it’s actually a lot less… Read the full story

An important question: which would you rather be in bed with, pita bread in hand – a hot dude or a big bowl of hummus?

It’s a thinker. It’s tough. But one Instagram account has ingenious answer for one of life’s greatest conundrums: why not both?

Hot Dudes and Hummus is, as its name would suggest, an Instagram account dedicated to photos of hot men eating hummus.

Inspired by the Hot Dudes With Kittens and Hot Dudes With Food accounts before it, Hot Dudes and Hummus is the creation of four university students from a range… Read the full story

The devil’s food to a veggie

You’ve finally done it – ditched the meat and turned veggie.

Okay, everyone get out your pens and take note: this is what slaying looks like.

India Ross is an 18-year-old student from St. Louis, Missouri. She hopes to be a fashion designer and – like most of us – has a ton of love for Beyoncé.

So when prom season rolled around, India knew there was really only one place to look for inspiration for her prom look. Queen Bey. Obviously.

She decided to emulate Beyoncé’s flawless 2015 Met Gala look (a wise choice).
