If you’re a fan of punctuation – and who isn’t? – look away now. Because the full stop is apparently dying out.
According to language expert and professor of linguistics at the University of Wales, David Crystal, the rise and rise of instant messaging may have spelt the end for the full stop – certainly as we have come to know and love it anyway.
‘We are at a momentous moment in the history of the full stop,’ Professor Crystal said rather dramatically during an interview at the Hay Festival earlier this month.
‘In an instant message, it is pretty obvious a sentence has come to an end, and none will… Read the full story
And it shows that old-fashioned values still have a place in our soulless, technology-led, modern society.
When Twitter user Ben John from Wigan spotted his 85-year-old nan May Ashworth’s recent Google search still open on her laptop, he couldn’t resist taking a photo and sharing it online.
Because this was probably the most polite request Google has ever had.
Ben shared the snap last week, writing: ‘Omg opened my Nan’s laptop and when she’s googled something she’s put ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. I can’t.’
Omg opened my Nan's laptop and when she's googled something she's put 'please' and 'thank you'. I… Read the full story
Harry Potter fans are using modern wizardry to create secret ‘marauder’s map’ tattoos.
Harry’s marauder’s map allows him to see every part of Hogwarts, including the grounds, and is also able to identify all the wizards within it. But, it can only be accessed if you know the secret spell: ‘I solemnly swear that I’m up to no good’.
And some fans are using it as inspiration for glow-in-the-dark tattoo designs.
The tattoos are done using UV (or black light) ink, which means they can only be seen properly when under UV lights.
So, while it might appear that someone only have some small black footprints tattooed on their arm, under UV lights, the tattoo suddenly appears (critics do argue that the tattoos will never be totally invisible and it’s advised that you seek out a tattooist who has worked with the ink before).
This design was shared on Reddit over the weekend and has fellow Potterheads drooling.
A mum blogger has written an open letter to M&S on Facebook, offering them an exciting opportunity to work with a ‘non threatening’ size 12 ‘warts and all’ model.
Alison Stankard, 43, from Timperly, Greater Manchester, describes herself as mum to three ‘unfortunate’ children – Ted, four, Oscar, six, and Bella, eight – and runs tongue-in-cheek and very sweary (clue’s in the name) fashion and parenting blog ‘Totes Inappropes’.
Last week, she took to Facebook to pitch herself as an alternative to celebrity M&S models Alexa Chung and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.
Her argument is pretty compelling, in our opinion.
It is that time of year again when you listen to Dad reeling out his best one liner that is so bad, you just have to laugh and slam your forehead on the table.
The trend to prove thinness by achieving a thigh gap continues to grow.
Women are being encouraged to aspire to have a gap at the top of their thighs when they stand with their knees together.
It may sound ridiculous but it’s sweeping social media and is devastating lives.
Here are 7 important truths you should know about the thigh gap.
1. It’s down to bone structure rather than fat deposition
Some people will naturally have a thigh gap due to shape and width of their pelvis and positioning of the tendons and muscles but for others, it’s not physically possible.
Tick tock, tick tock! At 35 I’m well aware the alarm on my biological clock is going off, but it’s not really waking me up.
You see I am completely laissez-faire about the topic of motherhood and babies.
Sure, the tiny toes and the first steps make my heart go boom – but so does a good night’s sleep, and getting ahead in my career.
For every reason I find to have children, there’s a counter argument to keep my legs crossed. If you feel the same you may be familiar with some… Read the full story
But now, one beauty blogger is taking Instagram by storm with his latest beauty-hack video.
And for once, we’re 100% percent behind it.
Because it isn’t expensive, he doesn’t waste valuable time discussing every detail of a stupidly expensive brush and, to be honest, it’s probably the best way to channel your inner, junk-food loving self.
Yes people, you now have a valid excuse to buy a burger and not feel bad about it
When this Disney-obsessed little girl got her happy ever after, a whole load of Disney princesses turned up to celebrate.
Five-year-old Danielle Koning from Grand Rapids, Michigan, has been living with her foster parents Sarah and Jim Koning since March 2014.
On June 8, the family attended court for an adoption finalisation hearing, so that Sarah and Jim could formally adopt Danielle and another little girl – one-year-old Neveah.
Danielle absolutely loves Disney princesses – particularly Cinderella – so her foster care case worker had asked a colleague to dress up as Cinders to surprise her at the hearing.
Usually, it’s pretty hard to make anything out in an ultrasound – they might be telling you it’s a baby, but it looks like a floating grey blob to the untrained eye.
However, when Redditor Brewhaus3223 and his wife went for their ultrasound at 24 weeks, they recognised the shape immediately.
The problem was – it looked like they were having a tiny car, instead of a baby.
Choosing not to eat meat is so much more than protesting against animal cruelty.
There is a hidden cost in how much beef, pork, lamb or venison the world consumes.
Eating meat every day is the carbon equivalent of boiling 285,526.8 kettles and using 6,492.1 days worth of water.
Not only that but ditching the meat would save the same amount of calories as there are in 1,428.3 Jaffa cakes and is the dietary fat reduction weight equivalent of 1,606 teaspoons of butter.
The website highlights how not eating meat is not only about animal welfare but also about saving the environment by lowering the carbon footprint of the planet and improving individual’s health and well being.
So what we’re getting from this is: David hates all big talkers, questions, anything that requires him to engage in conversation and just people in general, really.
We’re sure he’ll have a lot to say when he returns to work and sees the whiteboard. Or not.
Instagram has been mixing things up again and sent the internet into meltdown once more.
Gone is their iconic retro Polaroid-inspired logo to make way for a more modern, colourful design, as well as an overhaul of the app to make its menus and backgrounds entirely black and white.
This is more stressful than the time Twitter changed their ‘like’ button.
Rather than messing around with aesthetics everyone quite liked, here are 7 changes Instagram could make that their users actually want.
1. Let everyone have cllickable URL links
Instagram is one of life’s great equalisers; whether it’s Kylie Jenner charging a waist trainer company 300k… Read the full story
I often have to describe my cats by using some of their other traits as well – which always seems to work wonders.
‘Oliver’s the one who looks as though he’s eaten all of Tommy’s food and doesn’t give a sh*t, and Tommy’s the one who you’d imagine has a really high-pitched, squeaky voice.’
But if there was a crown for Best At Describing Their Cats, however, this girl would totally win it.
When one Tumblr user was left to look after her friend’s cats while she was away, she was left a description of each cat so that she could easily tell who was who
One awesome mum has been taking pregnancy like a champ after she went into hospital to deliver her second baby by cesarean.
On arrival however, Mollie Harwood was told major delays and they were unable to fit her in there and then, and so instead of giving birth, she ended up having a wander around the hospital to keep herself occupied.
Mollie, an Australian makeup blogger, was totally in her element when she discovered a beauty salon actually in the hospital – and so she decided to get her eyebrows tinted, hoping to look her best for the… Read the full story
If your significant other tends to go to pieces when you’re not around, take comfort in the fact you are not alone.
You have this poor woman for company.
She only left her boyfriend alone for a long weekend and he almost resorted to eating the pet fish.
The long-suffering girlfriend, who goes by the Imgur user name blondeb*tch, shared her other half’s desperate cries for help as he struggled to fend for himself with only Harold the guinea pig for company.
‘My boyfriend when I leave him to visit family for a long weekend,’ she explained.
