Whether you’re running around the park or hyping yourself up to compete in the Great Run Series; sometimes we all need a little help.

Running, like most sports, can be more intimidating than the actual reality. New sponsors Duracell have invented unique methods to motivate their runners to finish the Great Run races, and there are hundreds of ways you can help yourself run for longer.

If you’re desperate to prove to yourself, your friends and your family that you can get fit by running then here’s a couple of helpful tips to point you in the right direction:

1. Thumbs up away!

To start things off, you need to master a running style to maximise your potential.

Alberto Salazar is a man who knows a thing or two about running. The marathon expert once said that if you run with your thumbs up you will strain the muscles in your forearm, then your legs, then… well, then you’re not doing so good.

Who knew thumbs could be so… Read the full story

Earlier this week, Lauri and Cari Ryding came home from holiday to find that their pride flag had been stolen and their house at been egged.

Cari, 49, has lived in the neighbourhood in Natick, Massachusetts, for 23 years. She raised her family there, before separating from her husband 10 years ago.

And, four years ago, when wife Lauri, 52, moved in, she immediately felt welcomed.

So they were shocked at the vandalism – it was the first time they’d experienced prejudice where they lived. But then the response from their neighbours totally restored their faith.

Like spending time alone? You’re not anti-social, after all (Image: Getty)

As a child I would always disappear upstairs to my bedroom for periods of time during hectic family gatherings, and get scolded by my mother for being ‘anti-social’.

Nowadays, while I love parties, I take frequent trips to the loo to have little breathers by myself. And I never make plans two nights in a row because the idea of spending that much time around other people is, quite frankly, overwhelming.

I kind of always assumed I was a bit weird.

Until I found myself nodding frantically while reading an article about introvert hangovers.

I like to think I’m petty eco-friendly – I use a reusable water bottle, I sort my recycling, and I avoid microbeads.

But to be honest, I’ve never really thought that I’m making more of an effort than my male counterparts, though apparently I am.

Because being green just ain’t manly enough for them.

Abs of steel. And gold and silver….(Picture: Simone Biles/Instagram)

Earlier this month, some Twitter trolls tried to body shame Olympic gymnast Alexa Moreno and it didn’t go well.

Twitter immediately leapt to Moreno’s defence, pointing out the absurdity of people sat on their sofas (probably in their parents’ basements) bodyshaming someone who just represented their country at the Olympics.

But, it seems, some people still haven’t got the message because someone just tried to shame the US Olympic gymnast team. To be clear, that’s Simone Biles, Madison Kocian, Aly Raisman, who took home nine Olympic medals between them.

Earlier this week, Simone Biles – y’know, the 19-year-old who just took home four gold medals and… Read the full story

agony

Is there any pain worse than childbirth? In the hours of strenuous labour, many mums will scoff at the very idea of worse physical pain as they scream obscenities at the father and break his hand with an iron grip for putting her through this.

However, according to some scientists and mums, there are some wincing pains that they consider to be more agonising than giving birth, honest!

I am lucky enough not to have experienced most of these pains – and I have definitely never given birth to a child – but after taking to social media, parenting forums and looking into scientific studies, there were ailments that came up again and again as being worse than labour.

While it is important to add that the pain of childbirth is impossible to calculate, given that it is different for every woman based on a huge amount of factors, here are 13 things that will make you want to cry… Read the full story

I’ll be real. I’ve never attempted to shave my back. But with all the maneuvering required just to shave my legs, I imagine it’d be pretty difficult.

For years, anyone with a hairy back who’d, well, like to not have a hairy back, has had to resort to waxing, roping in a friend to help with shaving, or leaving patches of hair and razor cuts after trying to rid themselves of hair on their own.

It’s a struggle.

So some men, dedicated to solving the plight of those with hairy backs, have come up with a solution. The baKblade (we don’t get the… Read the full story

Most kids get a wave and a good luck kiss from their parents when setting off for the first day back to school.

These children, however, got a thorough trolling from their parent instead.

Todd and Becky Tackettt, from Ohio, do something funny for their four teenage daughters every year to mark end of the school holidays.

This year, having forgotten to plan anything, they used flipagram to put together a back-to-school themed video using a series of stills.

Bow down, French bulldogs, chow chows are the new dogs of the moment.

We fell madly in love with Tobypuff. And now we have discovered Chowder the chow chow, and are entirely obsessed.

Chowder is a very fluffy chow chow. Like many chow chows, he looks a lot like a little bear cub. This makes him a glorious being who deserves our utmost respect.

Other than being a tiny bear-dog, Chowder is a lot like the rest of us.

He is stuck with a sudden sense of ennui on birthdays.

Even healthy rabbits can be affected by flystrike (Image: Joel Sartore/National Geographic/Getty Images)

We all relish the warmer weather when it finally arrives each summer, but it can be the worst time of year for your pet rabbit.

The higher temperatures between April – October mean more flies and more chance of flystrike – a potentially fatal condition that occurs when green bottle flies lay eggs on your rabbit’s damp fur.

Within hours, the eggs hatch into maggots, which feed on your rabbit’s flesh. As the maggots grow, they eat further into the body, releasing toxins which will send your rabbit into shock. They are literally being eaten alive.

These maggots can kill an otherwise healthy rabbit within 24 hours.

Jelly babies

We know a lot of our favourite sweets – from Jelly Babies to Percy Pigs – contain gelatin.

We all probably have a vague idea what gelatin is made from. But, to be honest, it’s one of those things most of us don’t allow ourselves to dwell on.

For the avoidance of doubt, gelatin is a protein obtained by prolonged boiling of skin, tendons, ligaments, and/or bones taken from pig and cow carcasses with water.

Which, let’s face it, is not an image you want in your head when you’re tucking into a bag of fizzy cola bottles.

That’s probably why this Facebook video, which shows exactly… Read the full story

We all have our own idea of what makes a good date.

A good meal’s always a great – and safe – place to start. Who doesn’t love food?

But of course, everyone has their own taste.

While some might fancy spending lots of money at some lavish restaurant, others are happy to a good old Nando’s.

What most of us we’re sure can agree on is that not many people would consider taking their date out for a meal in a men’s toilet.

While we can’t confirm that anyone has actually dined in a men’s bathroom, we are confused by one… Read the full story

Today people around the world are understandably outraged by images of policemen in Nice ordering a woman sunbathing on the beach to take off her clothes, as part of France’s burkini ban.

The woman wasn’t actually wearing a burkini, mind you. She was wearing a sleeved top over a swimming costume, along with a headscarf.

Teenager slams Daily Star for writing misogynistic article about her
(Picture: @catttttt___ / Twitter)

Yesterday we wrote about Catrin Williams – a girl who became an internet sensation after posting two screenshots to prove to the world that it isn’t only provocative pictures that result in sexual harassment on social media.

Catrin posted a photo of her headphones to Snapchat and moments later received a message from a stranger who told her that he would like to see her with nothing but her headphones on.

As well as this site, many others wrote about Catrin’s eye-opening tweet.

But one newspaper pretty much missed all the significance of the message Catrin was trying to get across. They… Read the full story
