Croydon has reinvented itself (Picture: Getty/GoogleMaps/Metro/Mylo)

Hidden in the darkest depths of South London sits a borough once known for riots, rude boys and a ridiculous obsession with fried chicken.

As with Shoreditch and Dalston 10 or 15 years ago, Croydon has battled for years with its reputation. It was a place everyone would avoid, somewhere that people would scoff at and somewhere that even Kate Moss no longer wanted to be associated with.

Until recently.

Move over East London hot spots. Croydon is here and is quickly becoming one of London’s new hipster spots. And here’s why.

Few garden sheds are put to good use.

They’re places for people to potter about in – either hiding from their spouses or trying to nurture plants in the wrong season.

But an engineer from Hampshire has just spent the past five years in his dad’s shed building a Batman-style leisure powerboat (or Batboat, as it’s known in the DC Comics series).

And he’s just won the backing to start mass producing them.

Chris Phillips, 35, had to sell his Maserati to fund the project and… Read the full story

“When I grow up, I want to work in fashion”, I proclaimed in my AS Level Textiles class. A 17 year old girl with a dream of designing her own collection one day and appearing in Vogue.

19, fresh faced and eager to learn, I set foot inside my first fashion house. And what an eye opener it was.

Eight years on, and a career change later, I look back with some fond and some not so fond memories.

But it’s fair to say there are certain things that… Read the full story

When Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office received a call from an 18-year-old man saying there was an intruder in his house, they responded immediately.

The man had heard strange noises coming from within his home and his dogs had started to bark uncontrollably, so he called the police after barricading both himself and his pets in a room away from the ‘intruder’.

The police came out, with several deputies arriving at the scene to find the man very afraid, convinced there was someone in the house.

After a search of the property, they found the culprit: One of the man’s dogs.

While we may not be able to vote in the 2015 US presidential election, it doesn’t mean we can’t pick a side.

Or a milkshake, for that matter.

Yes, American-themed restaurant The Diner is pitting Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump against each other in the form of freakshakes.

If you aren’t aware of what a freakshake is (if that’s the case, have you been hiding under a rock?), then you’re in for a (highly calorific) surprise.

Horror fans will have the chance to win a spooky night at the vampire lair, which will be hosted by the great grand-nephew of Bram Stoker himself, Dacre Stoker, a well-respected vampire expert.

On October 31, two guests will relive the story of Jonathan Harker, the protagonist from Bram Stoker’s famous novel, Dracula, as they journey to the castle by horse-drawn carriage through Transylvania with the sun setting towards the horizon, surrounded by bats and the howling of wolves.

Greggs deliveries right to the front door, you say? The future could well and truly be here as the pastry giant is trialling a new service that will see certain savouries and sweets brought to you without you ever having to venture onto the high street.

The North East based bakery chain are initially rolling out the venture in Newcastle with a view to expanding it nationwide if it’s successful. Cobalt Business Park, which has 14,000 workers, is the lucky guinea pig and from this week, they will be able to order everything from sausage rolls to stotties for same day delivery.

One of the great problems of commuter life is that there’s no convenient way of having a drink.

Go and buy one of those single glasses of wine from M&S and it’s not going to last you the whole journey.

Get some tinnies for the trip home and invariably they spill everywhere and you end up sitting in sticky gin for the next hour.

Buy a bottle of wine and chances are, you’re having to drink out of crappy plastic cups.

Well, not any longer.

EVERYONE!

Over the last few days, the internet has been shocked by the ‘revelation’ that the little white table in the middle of your pizza has a use.

While many thought that the ‘pizza savers’ were there… because… they looked nice (?), it turns out that most people did know that the table pizza saver, which has been round for over 30 years, stopped pizza toppings getting stuck on the lid.

And they made their feelings clear, saying things like: ‘What did you think they were, a tiny table for gnomes to eat their pizza off?’.

While people on Twitter were keen to reveal that they knew the tiny tables had a function, pizza companies came… Read the full story

Being a vegan can be difficult at the best of times.

There's now a wine glass that attaches to the bottle so you can drink even quicker

Try going on holiday as a dairy-free, animal-free traveller and you’ll soon find yourself confined to eating rice or chips with chili sauce three times a day.

Oh, and a side salad – if it’s not been smothered in mayo or boiled eggs.

But that’s all changing.

And to prove it, vegan and vegetarian website HappyCow have released their list of the top vegan cities to visit.

So, which cities made the top five?

For months, Josette Duran had been confused about why her son, Dylan, kept asking her to make him a second packed lunch he could take to school.

Finally she asked him why he needed two lunches, questioning how he wasn’t getting too full after eating double his usual lunches.

That’s when Dylan explained the truth: he’d been eating one packed lunch and giving the other to his friend.

‘He only eats a fruit cup for lunch,’ Dylan told his mum.

‘Can you make him lunch, too? I don’t think he has lunch money.’
