I’ve rocked Rome regularly and frequently flirted with Florence.
But it took an invitation to the San Pellegrino Global Young Chef Of The Year to get me on a plane to visit Rome’s better-dressed northern counterpart, Milan.
It was only three days, but I found plenty to satisfy my four basic criteria for a city break.
Cuisine
I always try local dishes in Italy and in Milan it was risotto alla Milanese (buttercup-yellow and saffron-scented), breaded veal in various guises (nice but the cured meats are better) and, less excitingly, sticky polenta (one bowl was enough).
For my Milanese taste-tour, I headed to the contemporary, if budget-busting, Café Trussardi.
