No one should feel ashamed to wear a bikini

Don’t be afraid to bare your body, scars and all (Picture: Instagram/Michelle Elman)

For the last 21 years of my life, I have never worn a bikini in public.

Why? Because my body and, more specifically, my scars made people uncomfortable.

I have had 15 surgeries, a brain tumour, a punctured intestine, an obstructed bowel, a cyst on the brain and have lived for the last 21 years with a condition called hydrocephalus, which causes a build up of fluid on the brain.

And yet, among all this discomfort, I felt I was the one who made others uncomfortable.

Due to hydrocephalus, I grew up in and out of hospitals, sitting on the sidelines of my own life, unable to participate and suffering from indescribable headaches multiple… Read the full story

This girl called out men who say they’re too big for condoms in the best way

Oh, you’re too big for condoms are ya? Pull the other one.

A teen from Utah has proven once and for all, what most women have long suspected – there is no such thing as being ‘too big’ for condoms… unless, perhaps, you are literally a horse.

So, how did 18-year-old Emily White make this very important point in the fight against unsafe sex? By sticking her entire arm in to a Johnny, of course.

Talking about her now viral tweet, Emily told MTV: ‘I took the picture just for laughs, but the minute I looked at it, the excuse [I’m too big for condoms] immediately came to mind and I just had to poke fun at it.’

This parenting thing is pretty cool actually (Picture: Getty)

Let’s face it – what human being DOESN’T enjoy being carefree for at least a period of their life?

BUT…

Having kids can be pretty cool too.

So in the interests of bigging up the messy, poo-stained journey that is parenthood – here are 12 reasons having kids is awesome …

1. Toys

The New Statesman’s July front cover has sparked a backlash online.

Nicola Sturgeon has reacted angrily to the publication’s latest cover, which asks ‘why are so many successful women childless?’ above a picture of her, Theresa May, Liz Kendall and Angela Merkel standing over a crib which contains a ballot box instead of a baby.

The SNP Leader tweeted a picture of the front page with the comment: ‘Jeezo…we appear to have woken up in 1965 this morning!’

Two weeks of change (Picture: Julie Bhosale)

When you’ve just given birth, the last thing you should have to think about is how you look. But unfortunately that’s rarely the case.

With constant stories about celebrities ‘bouncing back’ in to shape mere seconds after giving birth, many new mums feel under a great deal of pressure to get their pre-pregnancy body back almost immediately.

It’s just this pressure which made mummy blogger Julie Bhosale decide to share candid photos of her postpartum tummy in a frank and at times graphic blog post.

HELP!!!!!!! (Picture:Antenna)

With schools breaking up for the summer holidays this week, there will be a mixture of excitement and dread sweeping the country – and that’s just from the parents.

Whether you can’t wait for six full weeks of late mornings, outdoor activities and child-friendly day trips or are breaking out in a cold sweat at the idea of juggling work and childcare and praying for good weather because the thought of spending longer than 24 hours in a confined space with your children makes you break into a sweat – there are certain thoughts all parents have over the summer break.

Day one

Yeah, school’s out for summer!

Because I don’t care what age you are, who doesn’t love the last day of term.

People are challenged to spend 10 minutes in a hot car – and no one can handle it

Hot Kar
Sounds easy right? (Picture: YouTube)

A social experiment has challenged adults to spend 10 minutes locked in a hot car, to show how it feels for children and pets.

According to American not-for-profit organisation Kids4Kars, a child dies each week of heatstroke because they’ve been left in a hot car. So, they decided to show adults how it feels.

People were invited to spend 10 minutes in the car, with a prize of $100 (£64) if they could stick it.

To release themselves early, they were told: ‘If you can’t make it and you want to get out, just press the button.’

Here’s what happened.

People were fairly comfortable to begin with.

Comfy

But, it didn’t take long to get unbearably hot.

John Burton wants to show the side of weight loss not often seen.

The 27-year-old from Manchester posted his before and after pictures on Reddit yesterday and they’ve already been viewed over 400,000 times.

He captioned his pictures: ‘The unseen disadvantage of weight loss (420lbs – 160lbs) – loose skin.’

After losing 260lbs (that’s 18-and-a-half stone) in three years, through diet and exercise alone, he’s rightly incredibly proud of his achievement.

Er, so sand contains more poo than sewage-contaminated sea

Well, we won’t be making sand angels this year (Picture: Getty)

Scientists have revealed (thereby KILLING OUR DREAMS) that sand contains 100 times more faecal matter (that’s a posh way of saying ‘poo’) than sea water contaminated with sewage.

Oh, how lovely.

Apparently, this fact has long been known in the science world (well thanks for the heads up, guys!), and now, thanks to research by Tao Yan from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (and breathe), we know why.

Tao Yan explained: ‘Enterococci and C. perfringens… showed significantly smaller decay rates in beach sand than in seawater.’

Why Instagram banning #curvy – but not #skinny or #thin – is so wrong

C'mon, Instagram. You can't just ban #curves
C’mon, Instagram. You can’t just ban #curves

Jenny McQuaile, Director/Producer of a new documentary Straight/Curve about the new era of plus size supermodels redefining society’s beauty standards, thinks the Instagram ban on #curvy is ‘outrageous’ and ‘damaging’.

Here’s why.

So many people in the fashion industry and in the media are working extra hard to empower women of this generation and the next to embrace their #curves and their bodies.

It is a whole movement right now that we are covering in our documentary Straight/Curve.

Models, agents, photographers, stylists, brands and magazine editors are all fighting for inclusivity and diversity in the fashion industry and in society.

And then Instagram comes along and in the click of a button obliterates years and years… Read the full story

15 things that happen at the end of the school term

The last couple of weeks at school before the summer holidays were always the best ones. This time of year makes us all nostalgic for those halcyon days of childhood, and the shenanigans we used to get up to when six weeks of freedom were within grasp.

1. No work got done

Why bother? We’ll only have forgotten it all by September.

2. Teachers got lax

They were almost free of us for six weeks – so long as we didn’t kill each other, they were basically fine with us doing whatever we liked.

3. The TV got wheeled into classrooms

The greatest sight a reluctant pupil could hope to see.

4. One kid would push it just a little too far

There was always one kid who decided to see just how much the teachers would tolerate at the end… Read the full story

Living every woman’s worst nightmare – on live TV (Picture: YouTube)

This singer just experienced every woman’s worst nightmare – but, to make it even more painful, she was on live TV.

Mexican singer and actress Patricia Navidad was performing Viva Mexico on breakfast TV show Despierta America (Wake Up America) earlier this week, when her sanitary towel was seen slipping from her dress and falling to the ground.

But, rather than standing still and waiting for the ground to swallow her up, or making a very swift exit stage right (because, who could blame her?), she carried on the performance without even flinching.

21 awkward experiences Londoners have on a regular basis

awkward gif
Every. Day.

Living in London provides daily challenges. High rent, the poor chances of ever being able to buy your first home and a daily torrent of silent abuse from other Tube passengers because you stepped in the wrong patch of pavement are among the struggles we face.

However, these issues pale in comparison when you consider the amount of awkward moments we experience every day.

1. The constant paranoia about whether giving up your seat on the Tube will be an insult

Is that man’s hair grey?

She’s pregnant, right?

2. Sitting through arguments between other Tube/bus passengers

THIS is what happens when people try to communicate on the Tube. This.

3. Moving someone else’s bag/coat when it’s basically resting on your lap and they haven’t noticed

I’m just going to passive-aggressively shift… Read the full story

Some people just have a lot of love in their hearts and they need to show it.

Like this little guy.

This adorable video shows a baby goat who just can’t stop giving his mum hugs. Whether she likes it or not.

It begins with the patient mum sitting on the grass while her littl’un repeatedly tries to hug it out. But, he might need to work on his approach, because repeatedly jumping on someone’s head can get trying.

Eventually mum loses the will and attempts to get away from her affectionate offspring.

But there’s no getting away.

And if you’ve got siblings, it’s likely that you’ll end up having a mini competition with them about who got the most!

That final day in school before a long, long summer break has arrived when you never thought it would. But it isn’t just the kids who are excited.

While students seem to reckon that the staff live for school and would bring their sleeping bags into work if they could, all who work in a school tend to live for this beautiful moment.
