14 women recreated the American Beauty shot to show that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes (Picture: Carey Fruth)

Even if you’ve never seen the film, you’ll be aware of the image: Mena Suvari floating naked among a sea of red rose petals.

A photographer has taken that Hollywood portrayal of beauty, dreamt up by Kevin Spacey’s creepy middle-aged character and creepier middle-aged movie execs, and recreated it using 14 women of different shapes and sizes to show that beauty doesn’t just come in one idealised package.

‘Almost every image you see in mainstream media is of one type of woman, thin white women to be specific,’ San Francisco-based photographer Carey Fruth told Huff Post.

Which leaves a lot of women feeling as… Read the full story

Hot dogs – everyone sane persons favourite dog

It’s national hot dog day (fo’ real), so I thought I’d take the opportunity to outline exactly why hot dogs are better than dog dogs.

Before all the animal welfare crew get on my back and claim I’m a pooch hater, let me set the record straight: I love dog dogs. Sometimes I even think I’d like to get one (until I remember I’ll have to walk it and scoop it’s poop). I just love hot dogs more.

So brace yourselves… prepare to be amazed (for this is a very well thought through and thorough argument). This is why hot dogs are better than dog dogs…

In fact, over two-thirds of us say we’ve experienced the supernatural. *Shivers*.

Researchers at www.VoucherCodesPro.co.uk polled 2,952 British adults aged 18-65 to see whether we believe in the paranormal. And it sounds like a resounding yes.

People were first asked if they believed in the supernatural and 82 per cent said they did. And 68 per cent of respondents went on to say they’d experienced the supernatural for themselves.

What do you look for in a summer holiday? If it’s peace, quiet and tranquility, then we suggest you don’t head to Benidorm this year.

Are you into heavy metal or smooth R&B? Turns out your answer could say a lot about the way you think.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have published a study in scientific journal PLOS ONE that indicates the music you listen to could reveal traits about your personality.

They found if you’re into pop, soft rock or acid jazz there’s a good chance you’re an empathetic person who’s good at responding to the emotions of others.

If Lara Croft had the average woman’s proportions (Picture: Bulimia.com)

An eating disorder charity is asking the gaming industry to get real with its depiction of female bodies.

‘With such high attention to detail in gaming, why can’t they accurately portray the female body?,’ Bulimia.com asks.

To shine a light on the unrepresentative, and potentially harmful, portrayal of women’s bodies in the industry, they have given some of the most famous female characters realistic makeovers, using the average American woman’s measurements.’

‘These days, there’s rarely a media type that isn’t criticized for its body image depictions, and video games are no exception,’ they write on their blog.

There’s nothing more natural or normal than a period.

Hooray for blood and fertility and messing up yet another pair of perfectly serviceable knickers because you’ve sprung a leak, right?

Ok, so it’s hardly a thrill but we’re big girls, we can handle it and we understand it’s all just part of the joy that is the menstrual cycle.

However, there are some things about it that will blow your mind.

Here’s everything your biology teacher didn’t teach you about your period.

1. It sort of turns you into a man part 1

The drop in estrogen can apparently boost your ‘male cognitive skills,’ such as spatial thinking.

Your parents are probably having better sex than you are.

Yup, as much as you might not like to think about it, the ladies who are middle-aged and older are really enjoying their bedroom antics.

New research suggests that women are not only continuing to have sex as they get older, but are having fun with it too.

The survey asked 2,116 women between the ages of 25 and 74 questions about how often they were getting down and dirty and how satisfied they were when they did.

It turns out as we get older things like relationship satisfaction and quality of communication with romantic partners become more important to us.

Sometimes introverts just need to hide from the world (Picture: Getty)

They say that the meek shall inherit the Earth, but that sounds pretty exhausting, and I doubt running the Earth would leave much room for alone time. So, thanks for the offer, but I’m afraid that we introverts are going to have to politely decline.

Here are the 17 things you know if you’re a bit of an introvert.

1. Being with people is exhausting

You love your friends, and you love spending time with them. But after a few days of constant social interaction you can feel yourself burning out and struggling to concentrate.

This is how everyone knits, right? (Picture: Rex)

Knitting is fun. It’s challenging and useful and draws you into a community full of interesting and talented people.

It also sometimes makes you want to throw your beautiful, hand-dyed, merino yarn into a corner and stab yourself in the eye with your needle.

I’ve been knitting for 12 years and, with more than a few dropped stitches along the way, I’ve learned some things.

Cats and small children must be kept away from the knitting basket.

It turns out it’s perfectly reasonable to take a couple of sharp, pointed metal things on a plane.

Although a difficult project can be a love-hate relationship, once you’re hooked there’s no turning back.

Here are 21 things every knitter knows.

Ahh, sleep (Picture: Getty)

Given that we get roughly half our lives to practice, humans seem determined to suck at sleeping.

One study from The University of Surrey found that one in five women and one in ten men have what they describe as ‘a bad night’s sleep’ five nights a week (more on that later).

If you struggle to slumber, then try these seven steps to upgrading your sleep.

1. Forget your pillow

Whether you sleep on your left or your right side can have quite an impact on a number of medical conditions.

Sleeping on your right side can worsen heartburn, but sleeping on the left puts more pressure on the internal organs. The perfect position for you spine is to sleep on your back… Read the full story

The University of Essex has begun discussions about opening the world’s largest – and deepest – swimming pool – in Colchester.

The pool, measuring 164ft (50 metres) long and 164ft deep, would simulate both outer space and deep sea environments, making it Europe’s leading marine and space research facility.

‘This is a very exciting proposal for us, with many elements that fit very well with our strengths as a university,’ University registrar Bryn Morris told MailOnline.

The university is working with Colchester-based company Blue Abyss to make the £40 million project a reality.
