Proton beam therapy has been around for a while – it last hit the headlines in 2014, when Ashya King, 6, was taken out of NHS care by his parents to be treated for a brain tumour in the Czech Republic, arguing that the therapy offered fewer toxic side effects than the traditional radiotherapy.
