An autistic meltdown is different from the temper tantrums many children will throw when they’re not getting their way.

Meltdowns happen when an autistic person is experiencing a sensory overload – the way they perceive the world around them means that bright lights, loud noises or certain patterns of movement can quickly become too much to bear.

How is an autistic meltdown different to a temper tantrum?

When a child throws a temper tantrum, they are in control of their surroundings.

They will be acting out because they want to get their own way, and will be able to stop doing so once they’re… Read the full story

Peel-off lip stain sounds equal parts amazing and baffling.

This stylish hospital clothing makes cancer patients look as well as feel better

It looks a little like lip gloss but, to apply it, you spread it on, wait for a few minutes and peel it off – leaving your lips tinted underneath.

If it’s anything like a peel-off face mask, it must be super satisfying to take off.

So it isn’t surprising that it’s been such a hit among beauty vloggers that, if you fancy it, you can watch… Read the full story

Cancer treatment is no easy process.

And whether it’s routine tests, chemotherapy or surgery you’re having, you should be able to focus all your energy solely on your recovery.

But with treatment comes hospital visits, and with hospital visits, hospital gowns.

Instead of wearing something familiar and that makes you feel like ‘you’, you end up wearing the same, flimsy gowns that are far from… Read the full story

A man named Jaimie Wilson has shared his before and after photos, which see him transition from female to male, in hope of stopping people ‘judging a book by its cover’.

In a set of side-by-side photos, Jaimie wanted to show his 106,000 followers that not all of those who hope to transition show ‘signs’ of being transgender.

9 reasons why Bermuda should be your next fitness holiday destination

Before I went to Bermuda, I’d only really associated the island with shorts, plane disappearances and Merlin (who goes there on holiday at the end of Disney’s Sword In The Stone – a niche cultural reference, granted).

As a result, it’s never been on my travel bucket list, and definitely not on the top of my fitness agenda. And it’s probably not been on yours either.

If you have a little one you probably know all about Chase, Zuma, Skye, Rubble, Marshall and Rocky as they save Adventure Bay from disaster and give you 20 blissful minutes of peace while your child is glued to the TV – unless you’ve become strangely hooked on the show too.

But I bet your children’s favourite show has left you scratching your head and asking a few questions.

Right up until we’re almost 25, we wait for the day we’ll receive the letter.

Metro IllustrationsWe talked to teenagers about the future of feminism and they were amazing

That is, the one sent to us by the NHS encouraging us to book a smear test.

We’re not waiting due to excitement, of course, more so because we’ve all heard – or imagined – the horror stories; that the tools will be metres long, that the doctors will be horrified by the sight of our vaginas.

Which is why one vlogger decided to undergo a smear test and live stream… Read the full story

Today in people doing truly appalling things to do the very concept of food, meet ‘hand salad’.

‘Hand salad’ is a new dining experience created by Bon Appétit.

They tried to subtly introduce it to the world yesterday, with a tweet telling people: ‘It’s called a “hand salad” but let’s not focus on that.’

Tinder is now letting you swipe through dates on your laptop

To which we say: seriously? You think we’re not going to focus on the name ‘HAND. SALAD’?

‘Hand salad’, to be clear, is salad that you eat with your hands like a ravenous beast forced to eat lettuce instead of carbs.

We’re becoming increasingly used to seeing more diversity in beauty and fashion.

Women are being encouraged to embrace their skin-deep differences, from vitiligo to freckles.

These half-marathon runners helped an exhausted runner cross the finish line

But in an era where we tell women that they should be proud of what makes them unique, often we can end up shaming those who want to blend in.

And last week, Winnie Harlow reminded us all that it’s possible to embrace our natural ‘flaws’ and do what we need to in order to feel confident and happy.

Marathon training week 10: running through the pain

There’s less that one month to go before the London Marathon and that means only one thing – upping the mileage.

In the earlier part of the week, I did a few short runs (clocking up about 20k overall by Wednesday) before a hefty Tabata session.Tabata, ICYMI, is the hellish interval training favoured by my PT.

Metro IllustrationsWe talked to teenagers about the future of feminism and they were amazing

It involves four different kinds of movement for four minutes, which you do in eight rounds. We started with cycling before moving onto squat jumps and burpees, bear crawls and frog squats and ending on kicksits.

Apart from feeling like my lunch was going to come back up on several occasions, that session absolutely torched my hamstrings for the next few days. I can’t actually remember a time when I was so stiff after a gym session.

But by the weekend, that had sort… Read the full story

Trust me, these photos will make you want to visit Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is at the top of most people’s travel bucket-list. Wisely so, because it is, simply put, spectacular.

It is widely thought to have been built in the fifteenth century, abandoned when the Inca Empire was conquered by the Spaniards in the sixteenth century and not made known to the outside world until 1911.

Today it is one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites and a World Heritage Site, as designated in 1983 by UNESCO.

Walking around it today still makes it difficult to fathom what it was like for explorers. The American Historian Hiram Bingham was guided to the ruins by locals in 1911. At that time the ruins were barely visible and covered by thick vegetation. His team had to return in 1912 and 1915 to start the arduous task of clearing the wilderness that has grown above and around the citadel. So, as you can imagine, it looked very different to the site we are so… Read the full story

Women aren’t exaggerating their pain. They’re not overreacting. Their pain is real and doctors aren’t doing enough to help them with it.

BBC Newsbeat reports that MPs have called current treatment of endometriosis ‘unacceptable’, noting that women with endometriosis are not getting diagnosed quickly enough.

They report that 2,600 women spoke to the All Parliamentary Group on Women’s Health, with 40% saying they had seen a doctor ten times before… Read the full story

Kylie Jenner is no stranger to controversy, and like most teenagers, she’s no stranger to pushing boundaries.

When we were teens it was mostly about wearing eyeliner to school or experimenting with being Wiccan. For KJ? It’s naming giving her cosmetic lines slightly less than innocent names.

Her latest blusher range features such gems as ‘hot and bothered’ ‘virginity’ ‘barely legal’ and ‘x rated.’

Unsurprisingly, these names have got people rather hot under the collar. On a thread on Mumsnet, comments such as… Read the full story
