It can make you feel trapped (Picture: Deirdre Spain for metro.co.uk)

When I walked in to the ward to be induced to have my first baby I was beyond excited.

I had bought two gigantic Cath Kidston floral print bags for the big occasion.

The story of a ‘rubbish’ mother: How postnatal depression ruined a year of my life

At the time I thought Cath Kidston was a brand that would undoubtedly scream out supermum. ‘Oh have you seen that pregnant mum who’s arrived to be induced? She’s got floral print Cath Kidston bags. Yep – she’ll sail through motherhood that one.’

One of my biggest fears about openly saying ‘hey, I’m not doing okay, I’m sometimes so miserable I can’t get out of bed, I keep having panic attacks, and I need to check that all the switches are turned off for the seventh time before I can sleep’ was how it would affect my relationships with other people.

When you spill what feel like your biggest, heaviest secrets, you’re giving the person hearing them a lot of power: the power to say something hurtful, to reject you, to confirm all the worst things you think about yourself.

Let's be very clear, taking a condom off during sex is sexual assault

That’s what I’ve been scared of.*

*Alongside all the usual stuff I’m scared of, obviously. Getting fired. Accidentally burning down my house. Home invasions. The death of all my friends (always the reason they’re not texting me. Always).

I was scared that when I admitted… Read the full story

‘I’m so stressed,’ is something you’ve probably said a number of times in your life.

I struggle with stress – and it got so bad it made me ill

Often it just means that you’re busy, under a lot of pressure or dealing with a difficult emotional situation.

But for many people – myself included – that normal stress can escalate to something that becomes damaging to your health.

So what is stress? How can you tell when it’s becoming damaging? Why do some people struggle with it more than others? And, most importantly, how can you keep it under control?

Is stress always bad?

No – stress is often just a motivator that kicks our brain into high gear when you need to deal with something challenging.

‘We all feel the pressure when things are pending, or we feel out of control,’ says Ann Sidwell, a senior therapist at The Priory’s Hospital in Chelmsford, Essex.
