IDAHOT 2017: 4 of the most inappropriate questions I’ve been asked as a trans guy

May 17 is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia – or IDAHOT.

The date was chosen to mark the World Health Organization’s decision to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder in 1990.

Growing my own penis – here’s how I’m getting the male body I’ve always wanted

But while we’ve come a long way, there is still a long way to go.

For example, when you tell people you are transgender, they just remove all filters and think they can ask inappropriate questions that they would never dream of asking anyone else.

Here are four I used to get quite regularly.

Can I see it?

When I started telling people I was transgender, and transitioning from female to male, a lot of friends asked if they could see ‘it’ after surgery.

‘It,’ of course, was my dick.

After a year or so of this, I started telling people who asked this question that… Read the full story

If you’re a couple who are thinking about having a threesome and are wondering where to find your third, the answer is really easy: pay for a professional.

I know, I know; you don’t want to.

Prostitution in the UK: 9 reasons it’s perfectly fine to pay for sex

I grew up with a lot of conflicting messages about who I was allowed to love.

When I was in school, my teachers would promote equality, and tell us it was important to accept everybody, regardless of their sexuality.

Don't let someone's veganism put you off dating them

It may not be as visually exciting as a rainbow cheese toastie, but it’s delicious, it’s reliable, and it can be smothered on everything from ice cream to chips.

Starbucks is going to make its drinks stronger by trialing coffee ice cubes

Iced coffee lovers know the anguish.

You take a few sips of your icy cold drink. You sigh with joy. You get busy doing something else, come back to drink more, and discover that the ice has melted, leaving you with a watered down version of whatever drink you ordered.

It’s deeply upsetting.

The natural solution would be to use ice made with coffee, so that when the cubes melt they don’t water anything down.

That’s the logical solution, right?

So we’re a little puzzled as to why it’s taken this long for Starbucks to get on this little trick, but hey: we’re happy it’s finally happening.

We all have mates who are straight up snakes.

They’re the ones we tag on Facebook when we spot a video of snakes writhing in a pit. They’re the ones we would never, ever trust with sensitive information, but bloody love when they reveal someone else’s.

But you know, they make us feel good.

It can, however, be difficult to know how to respond. Do you bathe in false modesty and reject their kind, true words? Or do you agree with them? After all, what they’re saying is true – so why not just acknowledge it?

Except is doesn’t work like that, as author and activist Feminista Jones has been pointing out.

100 days of trans: what I’ve learnt since coming out as transgender
Dealing with death stares from old people in supermarkets became tiring (Picture: Liberty Antonia Sadler for Metro.co.uk)
