Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last 6-9 months, you’ll have noticed that the mermaid and unicorn trends refuse to die.

Someone is sewing vaginas on to Beanie Babies and we don't understand why

Just when you think you’ve seen the last of them, bam! Another mermaid frappuccino hits Starbucks and they’re the talk of the town again.

Well, this mermaid moment is a little different and certainly has the internet divided.

Live blog from a depressive episode: Here’s what it’s really like to suffer from depression

Usually, I write about my bipolar disorder when I’m well.

It’s much easier, then, to see the beauty in depression.

No man is an island – How my friends have helped me cope with depression

When I’m happy and vibrant and stable, I have an odd sort of respect for my depression and the compassion it’s given me.

It’s probably a bit like the way mothers remember childbirth; they forget the pain it causes and feel like they could do it all over again.

Between episodes, I forget how excruciating depression can be. That’s when I find the bravery to write about it.

I’ve never tried to write candidly about depression while I’m in the throes of it – until now.

Right now, I’m in the middle of a depressive episode.

Happy World Goth Day!

Today is the day that goth’s from all over come together to celebrate in their very own special way what it means to be a goth. Being a goth is an interesting lifestyle choice, and with it comes a strong dedication to all items of black clothing, black nail polish and of course chunky boots.

But not everyone can handle the goth lifestyle, and most of us have had a little dabble in the goth way of things.

This happened most likely when you were a teenager, and intent on showing everyone just how cool… Read the full story

It’s official: unicorn food is dead.

We reached peak unicorn last month with Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino Mania.

But summer’s (sort of) here and the days of sparkles and rainbow colours are numbered.

Because we’ve now apparently entered ‘mermaid season’.

And Creme & Sugar cafe in California – home of the Unicorn Hot Chocolate –  is kicking off proceedings by serving up an entire mermaid-themed menu, complete with mostly turquoise-coloured food, edible pearls and glitter.

World Goth Day is celebrated on May 22, and is seen as a chance for the goth scene to celebrate its existence, along with an opportunity to make its presence known globally.

The day originated in the UK in 2009, when BBC Radio 6 was looking at a number of music subcultures during a week in May.

Floating around on a lilo is all well and good until someone gets thirsty.

Then you’ve got to heave yourself up and paddle your raft to the side of the pool, before schlepping to the kitchen or bar.

It’s a massive drag.

But that’s all going to be a thing of the past.

Because someone’s come up with the most ingenious pool-based invention ever: a wine float.

Prosecco all day, every day (Picture: Pexels)

If you spend the majority of this weekend in a prosecco-infused stupor, then you’re not alone.

Because it turns out that Britain is the world’s biggest fan of the Italian fizz.

What it's like to have Pure O

We apparently consumed a third of all the prosecco produced last year – more than any other country.

Production has increased by 44.8% between 2014 and last year thanks to a bumper harvest, and that resulted in 410.9 million bottles being produced.

The Consortium for the Protection of Prosecco says that three-quarters of the bottles went overseas, mainly to the UK and the… Read the full story

14 things we all did in secret as kids

You basically never brushed your teeth (Picture: Raphael Huenerfauth/Photothek/ Getty Images)

You don’t believe any of that childhood innocence nonsense because all kids are sly, sneaky, secretive little terrors.

While your parents innocently assumed that you were well behaved and incapable of things like setting booby traps, sabotaging siblings and lying, you knew different.

By the age of 11 with the amount of hidden sweets in your room, all the lures you had set around the house to capture Santa, and your techniques to avoid brushing your teeth, you were practically leading a secret double life.

Everyone had that one sibling that was the perfect, model child.

So much of getting better is admitting that you can’t do everything alone

I’ve always been someone who prides myself on being independent.

I’m self-sufficient, I don’t need anyone, and I can get things done on my own without any help.

A lot of dealing with mental health is stripping that back, admitting I can’t do everything alone, and asking for support.

metro illustrationsSo much of getting better is admitting that you can't do everything alone

It started with going to my GP and coming clean about the mess inside my head.

That was scary for a whole tonne of reasons (what if he didn’t believe me, what if there was nothing wrong and I was just making a big fuss over thoughts everyone has to put up with, what if they put me on pills that made things worse), but it was also terrifying because it felt like an admittance of weakness.

Openly saying that I’m not okay has been difficult.

It’s been me saying: ‘I’ve been dealing… Read the full story

15 events from the 00s that defined life

Ah, the 00s, one of those periods during which no-one ever really knew what exactly to expect, apart from the end of the world.

Thanks, Y2K bug.

As we waved goodbye to the 90s, and shimmied our way into the new millennium, we were full of hope about flying cars and other general, life-changing, scientific things.

However, what we really got was Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie patronising all working people, a fierce battle between those who were Team Will or Team Gareth, and the greatest movie of all time, aka, Mean Girls.

So, basically, not too shabby.

Credit cards can be incredibly useful.

They earn you Airmiles. They can buy you a little time when it comes to funding new kitchens and tickets. They can save your life abroad.

metro illustrationsSo much of getting better is admitting that you can't do everything alone

But they can also lumber you with a whole load of unmanageable debt.

Take illustrator and educator, Kate Bingaman-Burt, for example.

In 2004, she found herself $24,000 (£18,460) in credit card debt and to try. And as a way of making herself more aware of her purchases, she decided to illustrate her credit card statements.

When it comes to sports day, you’re either filled with pure joy or so much dread that you’d consider eating your own toes to avoid taking part.

It is a Hunger-Games-meets-little-ribbons-and-tiny-trophies event, and something that only the most athletic survive.

Everyone else begrudgingly sacrifices their dignity in the name of sport amid encouraging snippets of how it is the taking part that counts.

No, Mr Hughes, we all know that it is the winning that counts, so shut your lying pie hole.

We reveal what your favourite event at sports day says about you…
