I have schizophrenia: Here are 10 things I can’t live without

As a person living with schizophrenia for more than a decade, I have developed my own trusted first-aid kit for a frazzled mind.

We’ve all heard the stories about people ditching their meds and becoming a roaring success, but for a third of patients with psychosis, this, unfortunately, isn’t the case.

I have learned the hard way (after an unsuccessful suicide attempt) that I do need my medication to stay well.

Schizophrenia is about more than meds though.

Good relationships with professionals and loved ones, a modicum of exercise and some ‘tummy taming’ knickers all make up my makeshift care plan to stay well.

Perhaps you can relate to some of the things that someone… Read the full story

National School Sport Week: Why I pretend to love PE so my daughter won’t hate it like I did

Not my experience of PE at school (Picture: Getty)

This week, June 26-30, is National School Sport Week.

The week is organised by the Youth Sport Trust to encourage kids to get active at school and to enjoy PE.

When I read about the week it got me thinking about how much I hated PE at school and how I really want to avoid my daughter feeling the same.

On PE days at secondary school I would dread it all day.

I’d feel sick and would pray for heavy rain so the playing fields would be too waterlogged. (This often backfired and they’d make us go out and get wet anyway).

As a man who discovered the Harry Potter books in his 30s – damn, they’re amazing

When it comes to reading, I’ve always been a snob.

As a pretentious teenager I made a point of only reading ‘classics’ or heavy-going non-fiction.

In my callow 20s, books were less a means of self-improvement, more a vehicle to signal my exquisite taste and refinement to fellow commuters.

Not to mention cramming my noggin with flimsy intellectual ammunition, all the better to unload on tipsy student girls at parties.

Holy smokes. Harry Potter is twenty. Twenty!!!

From humble beginnings in an Edinburgh cafe, J.K. Rowling created a colossus. Harry Potter made us laugh, cry, cheer and wail, and inspired a generation of children to love reading.

There have been games, toys, as much merchandise as you can throw a wand at and a highly successful film franchise. But let’s be honest – really, it’s always been about the books.

And seeing as today marks the twentieth anniversary of the publication of The Philosopher’s Stone, we’ve gone through every novel in the set (not including spin-offs or other material, for… Read the full story

How I’m feeling six months in to taking antidepressants

I never thought I’d be someone who takes antidepressants.

I never imagined myself having alarms on my phone to take pills, chummily chatting with other depressives about side effects, and counting out little foil packs to take on holiday.

A big part of that was my fear around antidepressants – the worry that they’d change who I was, flatten out all my emotions, or wreck my sex drive.

Another part of me thought that taking meds was the ‘lesser’ option, a way of dealing with mental illness that wasn’t as good as proper therapy.

But reaching a low point (suicidal thoughts, spending weekends sobbing in bed, having panic attacks in the work toilets, you know the drill) made me throw all of the worries and medication-based stigma out of the window.

I wasn’t bothered about what it meant to be taking… Read the full story

Every kid has tried to argue their case for a pet.

Some of us asked for ponies to be installed in our back gardens. Others asked for sausage dogs. And some simply wanted a little kitten to play with.

Dolce & Gabbana just got massively played by one of their own models

But parents are notoriously difficult to negotiate with – primarily because they’re obsessed with the question: ‘Who’s going to look after it?’.

For some reason, that seems to kill all debate.

If only we’d been more like 11-year-old Romesa from San Antonio, who presented her parents with a six-page dossier into why they should… Read the full story

Eid ends this evening, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast between 3am and 9pm, abstaining from eating and drinking until the iftar feast.

Canada is a model nation in so many ways.

It’s beautiful. Liberal. It has Justin Trudeau.

And in line with its forward-thinking ways, it’s about to become the first major economy to legalise the recreational use of cannabis next year.

But Canadians are already hitting the blunt so hard that the country might well be in for a weed shortage.

There are worries that plans to create a legal market are going to put added pressure on an already struggling market.

I was first diagnosed with endometriosis back in 2012, after I’d already had two surgeries and had been living in agony for over a year.

My symptoms first started in August 2011. I collapsed at home in a great deal of pain and was taken by ambulance to hospital.

After five days I was released with some pain medication. Two days later I returned and was rushed to the operating theatre under the care of a general surgeon – no, not a gynaecology specialist, a general surgeon.

If, as an adult woman, who has reached the grand old age of 26, I was still obsessed with Barbies I would be considered a bit strange.

A fondness for Thomas the Tank Engine would also be seen as a bit out of left field.

But an enduring love for Harry Potter? That’s pretty common.

My love for Harry Potter is hard to explain. I have seen every single film a dozen times. I’ve re-read the books until they’ve fallen apart. I have a Deathly Hallows tattoo on my left ankle (yes, really).

Yesterday we brought you news that a woman was rejected from her apartment building’s communal pool for wearing a one-piece swimming suit.

Why? Because it was thought that her curvaceous body might prove too much of a temptation for the randy boys hanging around the complex.

Harry Potter. To some it’s a book series. To others, it’s a whole lifestyle.

Whatever your level of interest / enthusiasm / obsession with the tale of The Boy Who Lived, chances are you’ve encountered him in at least one form, along with his faithful friends and sneering, often surprising enemies.

But the great thing about J. K. Rowling’s epic series is the manner in which she weaves in priceless nuggets of wisdom – many from Albus Dumbledore, who almost outrivals Plato in the sage advice department – amidst all the wand waving and monster battling.

And to help celebrate Harry reaching the ripe old age of 20 (that’s the books; he’s actually… Read the full story
