This article is part of Hair Care, our month-long investigation and exploration into our relationships with hair and the cultural implications that come with it.

I can still remember the moment. I’d gone to the hairdresser on a Saturday afternoon, and wanted a shorter crop than the pixie cut I already had.

How long does it take the contraceptive pill to work?

A trim, a short back and sides, for want of a better phrase. I imagined Kylie in her short-haired days, or Jean Seberg in Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless (forgive me that one, I was studying French at the time).

What I left with was basically the same amount of hair – same shape, I’d say, too – on my head, as a tennis ball. Short back and sides? It was just short all over.

I was going out to a pub with mates for… Read the full story

Is nut milk even that good for you?

Evita Patsey Edgar, a 20-year-old from the State of Sabah, North-eastern Malaysia, has auditioned to compete in next year’s Miss Universe competition.

July Horoscope: What to expect for the next two weeks

In the process, she’s opened up about a childhood fraught with bullying.

Today, the unique pattern of moles, covering her face and body, are considered beguilingly beautiful. They could even offer her a competitive edge against more conventional beauty queens.

Indeed, the beauty industry is changing and we have started to witness other, hugely successful models with similarly unusual skin conditions, such as Chantelle Brown-Young.

The industry is gradually recognising the need to broaden their conception of beauty.

If you’re the kind of person who gets told to calm down a lot, who makes people sweat when they receive an email from you or who people don’t like to give bad news to, then this well may resonate with you.

I, for one, can be ridiculously quick to temper or anger over the slightest of things and it is not something that I am proud of and it’s something that brings me – and those around me – a little bit of turmoil.

Like many people, catch me with something annoying on ‘one of those days’ and you are liable to be snapped at. I am… Read the full story

So you’ve committed to remaining baby-free (for the time being, anyway) and started on a contraceptive pill – how long until you can start banging with wild abandon?

It’s not instantaneous, to be clear. You won’t be entirely protected from pregnancy from the moment that first pill from the foil packet meets your tongue.

Oenophiles usually abide by some steadfast unwritten rules, like pairing sweet wines with puddings, port with mature cheeses, and only drinking red wine with red meat.

But lately, top chefs have been turning the wine world on its head, suggesting you can drink Champagne with red meat (the horror!).

This month, Champagne is taking centre stage at Newmarket races with a collaboration between Moët & Chandon and Jockey Club Catering, where bottles of fizz will be served not just as an aperitif, but alongside a main course… Read the full story

I have never been to a spa.

The notion of devoting an entire weekend to one has never once even crossed my mind.

Can a solo travelling man enjoy a holiday with 13 women in Slovenia? Yes. Obviously.

I’ve used ‘spa facilities’ during my extremely brief stint at the gym (much more than the actual gym facilities themselves), but I’ve never had a ‘spa treatment’ per se, or any professional time one-on-one limb squeezing.

So it was strange to hop on a weekend train to Shropshire in sweltering heat to have a ‘lava shell’ treatment instead of cracking… Read the full story

Earhart remains an inspiration (Picture: Getty)

Amelia Earhart’s story is often overshadowed by her unexplained disappearance on July 2, 1937, 80 years ago today. However, she is more than just an enigmatic mystery.

Not long after taking her first flight as a passenger in 1920 – the same year that women gained the right to vote in the US – Amelia developed a determined passion that led to her taking lessons to become a pilot the following year.

The First World War had given females the opportunity to take on roles outside of the home and in 1922 the newly qualified flyer broke the women’s altitude record when she dared to fly to 14,000ft.

I would rather overwhelm myself with too much stuff to do than delegate responsibility to anyone else.

Are you stressed? How to spot the symptoms, and stop it from getting out of control

The only thing I don’t have under tight control is my tendency towards controlling.

Over the years I’ve tried to break the habit, and mostly failed – which is unusual, as my self-control is usually flawless.

If you’re not sure if you’re a control freak, here are some signs to look out for.

You believe that you are always the best person for the job

I don’t mean this in an egotistical way – just that you don’t trust anyone else to get the job done.

Vegetable crisps are apparently more unhealthy for us than Krispy Kreme doughnuts

Turns out the shrivelled up bits of root veg you get at posh, adult parties so that people don’t go around breathing cheese and onion into people’s faces might actually be more unhealthy than regular crisps.
