Congrats, grumpy people: here’s why being a pessimist is actually good for you
Don’t look on the bright side.
Everyone’s always banging on about staying positive, and keeping a sunny outlook. But it turns out they’re all wrong.
The latest video from The Science of Us shows why it’s not a great idea to always be super positive, explaining that getting caught up in positive daydreaming can derail you from actually going out and achieving your goals.
They highlight studies by Gabriele Oettingen, who – through years of research – found that people who predict negative outcomes typically perform better than those who think everything will go well.
But that doesn’t mean we should pack it all in and start thinking everything’s pointless.
The best thing, says Oettingen, is to do some WOOP-ing. Not as enthusiastic as it sounds.
Basically, WOOP (Wish, Outcome, Obstacles, Plan) just means actually recognising potential negative outcomes and planning… Read the full story

Fuelled by plant-based protein including beans, seeds and grains, they’ve managed to build and maintain impressive form and strength.

Photographer documents the process of coming out to her family in honest and emotional images
London-based photographer Paola Paredes, 29, struggled to come out to her family for years.
It was only recently, through her photo project Unveiled, that she finally found the confident to sit her parents down, along with her sisters, and tell them ‘I’m gay’.
Using three cameras, she captured every emotion she and her family went through during the next few hours.
Paloa was raised a staunch Catholic in Ecuador, where her parents are still based. Although she had spoken to her sisters about her sexuality, she was afraid her conservative parents, who had always seemed to blindly accept the priests’ sermons denouncing homosexuality, wouldn’t be… Read the full story

Here’s why you should tell your friends and family you’re into BDSM
Would you tell your friends and family you’re into BDSM?
For most, the reflexive answer’s an immediate no.
But practicing BDSM in my personal life and as a professional dominatrix has taught me that there are some situations where telling makes sense.
If you’re expIoring your fantasies with people you don’t yet trust, it’s wise to tell someone the bare outlines of what you’re doing.
You don’t need to provide all the details, but before meeting a new play partner, tell a trusted friend where you’ll be and who you’ll be with, and let them know if you might be engaging in activities that leave you vulnerable.
Your friend can ring or text you at a pre-arranged time.
If you don’t answer, they can check in on you, or contact… Read the full story

How you put your bra on tells a lot about your personality (apparently)
We just thought putting your bra on backwards and then rotating it meant you were a little less nimble than your back-fastening sisters. But, apparently, it means a whole lot more.
At least according to one body language expert.
Patti Wood is a body language and human behavior expert and she’s also the author of ‘Snap: Making the Most of First Impressions, Body Language and Charisma’.
And she can tell a lot about you by the way you put on a bra. ‘There are four distinct personality types – drivers, influencers, supporters, and careful correctors – who tend to have very unique ways of doing things, even small tasks,’ she told Redbook.
