Congrats, grumpy people: here’s why being a pessimist is actually good for you

Don’t look on the bright side.

Everyone’s always banging on about staying positive, and keeping a sunny outlook. But it turns out they’re all wrong.

The latest video from The Science of Us shows why it’s not a great idea to always be super positive, explaining that getting caught up in positive daydreaming can derail you from actually going out and achieving your goals.

They highlight studies by Gabriele Oettingen, who – through years of research – found that people who predict negative outcomes typically perform better than those who think everything will go well.

amy poehler lower your expectations gif

But that doesn’t mean we should pack it all in and start thinking everything’s pointless.

The best thing, says Oettingen, is to do some WOOP-ing. Not as enthusiastic as it sounds.

Basically, WOOP (Wish, Outcome, Obstacles, Plan) just means actually recognising potential negative outcomes and planning… Read the full story

Not right.

Defying the received wisdom that meat = strong are a new breed of vegan powerlifters, arm wrestlers and bodybuilders who eat an entirely meat- and dairy-free diet.

Fuelled by plant-based protein including beans, seeds and grains, they’ve managed to build and maintain impressive form and strength.

So for anyone who still thinks vegan = pale and weedy, well, these guys respectfully disagree.

The condom’s not the problem (Picture: Rex)

For some reason, there are guys with big aversions to condoms, despite the fact they’re pretty great with the whole stopping STIs and unwanted pregnancies thing.

Men have been known to come up with a whole range of ridiculous reasons to not wear a rubber but science has taken one excuse out of the equation.

London-based photographer Paola Paredes, 29, struggled to come out to her family for years.

It was only recently, through her photo project Unveiled, that she finally found the confident to sit her parents down, along with her sisters, and tell them ‘I’m gay’.

Using three cameras, she captured every emotion she and her family went through during the next few hours.

Paloa was raised a staunch Catholic in Ecuador, where her parents are still based. Although she had spoken to her sisters about her sexuality, she was afraid her conservative parents, who had always seemed to blindly accept the priests’ sermons denouncing homosexuality, wouldn’t be… Read the full story

Said as someone born right in the middle of it, the Millennial generation is ripe for piss-taking.

Look at our social media obsession, sense of entitlement and ridiculous fashion trends.

It would be shocking if people didn’t make fun.

But no one parodies us better than Millennials of New York, a new Instagram and Facebook account created by humour writers Alec MacDonald and Connor Toole of Elite Daily, which takes shots at all the things we hold dearest.

Long story short: this cat looks like a vampire, and the internet loves it.

Loki the vampire cat is the latest animal to get Insta-famous, after her blend of weird-cute features caught the attention of the internet overlords (cat people. The internet is run by them).

She’s a grey and white tabby cat, which adds the cute factor, but she’s got a major fang overbite, which is where the creepy/weird part comes in.

Her Dracula-esque looks have led to her being nicknamed ‘little vampire’.

Attempts to create a new policy for interns via state legislature in Missouri have massively backfired.

Two politicians had been forced to resign after sexually suggestive text messages sent to a 19-year-old intern and two additional cases of sexual harassment came to light.

As a result, lawmakers brainstormed ideas on how to prevent similar situations happening again.

Here’s why you should tell your friends and family you’re into BDSM

Would you tell your friends and family you’re into BDSM?

For most, the reflexive answer’s an immediate no.

But practicing BDSM in my personal life and as a professional dominatrix has taught me that there are some situations where telling makes sense.

If you’re expIoring your fantasies with people you don’t yet trust, it’s wise to tell someone the bare outlines of what you’re doing.

You don’t need to provide all the details, but before meeting a new play partner, tell a trusted friend where you’ll be and who you’ll be with, and let them know if you might be engaging in activities that leave you vulnerable.

Your friend can ring or text you at a pre-arranged time.

If you don’t answer, they can check in on you, or contact… Read the full story

Punk singer and athlete John Joseph is living proof of the possibility of transformation.

As a teenager he was homeless, addicted to drink and drugs – he ‘spent all of ’88 on crack’ – shot, stabbed and banged up in jail.

The 1.0 version of John Joseph could hardly be further away from the man he is today.

Now, 35 years on, he is a vegan athlete with five Ironman triathlons under his belt – and he puts his metamorphosis down in part to his meat-free diet.

If you want to put some beats to your, uh, beats you can link the toy with your music, create patterns and save them to your phone to enjoy later.

How do you fasten yours? (Picture: Getty)

We just thought putting your bra on backwards and then rotating it meant you were a little less nimble than your back-fastening sisters. But, apparently, it means a whole lot more.

At least according to one body language expert.

Patti Wood is a body language and human behavior expert and she’s also the author of ‘Snap: Making the Most of First Impressions, Body Language and Charisma’.

And she can tell a lot about you by the way you put on a bra. ‘There are four distinct personality types – drivers, influencers, supporters, and careful correctors – who tend to have very unique ways of doing things, even small tasks,’ she told Redbook.

14 times honesty might not be the best policy

Sometimes a little porkie for the best (Picture: Getty)

Broadly speaking, it’s probably best to be honest. It’s a good rule of thumb.

But there are certain situations in which telling the truth is the worst thing you could possibly do.

Here’s a handy guide to some of the situations in which you should keep the truth to yourself.

1. You don’t think your girlfriend’s new dress is very flattering

Ask yourself – does she have another dress to change into once you’ve destroyed her self-esteem with a negative comment? No? Then shut up.

2. Your teacher is asking if you know who graffitied on the science block

You know full well that the Year 10 nutcase is the guilty party. But you’re sure as hell not going to… Read the full story
