How ‘returnships’ could help women in science and engineering get back to work after having a baby

Stem careers can be much harder to return to after a break (Picture: Getty)

Having a long break from working can be career suicide, especially in Stem (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) industries.

Women are often faced with a choice between focusing on their career or having a family.

How long can breast milk be left out for?

I have met some who have successfully managed to do both, but they are a rarity.

The key to their success seems to be in having a truly egalitarian relationship, where childcare responsibilities are shared equally and career sacrifices are made by both parents.

Unfortunately this is not always the case.

Every year, without fail, my sparkly spidey senses start tingling, usually around the middle of November.

I can’t walk into a shop without being drawn like a moth to light to anything that’s made of velvet, covered in glitter or embellished in sequins.

I own a pair of metallic silver trousers that make me look the tin man and these are wheeled out every year for approximately six weeks, until they’re locked away again on New Year’s Day.

It’s just how it is. And you know who knows what’s up? Vans. Vans know what’s up.

For they’ve launched a brand… Read the full story

Today is the start of World HIV Testing Week.

Paedophile with HIV caught trying to meet boy, 12, for unprotected sex

It is about raising awareness not only of HIV and Aids but about encouraging those who are sexually active to get themselves regularly checked.

Those behind the awareness campaign are working in collaboration with HIV Prevention England.

HIV is still a significant public health challenge in Britain with an estimated 103,700 people living with the virus in this country. Of those it is believed around 18,100 are unaware they have the condition.

This year the event starts on Saturday 18 November.

Do you remember these creepy and odd childhood toys?

Still missing your childhood toys? (Picture: Metro.co.uk)

One thing I’ve noticed recently is that, among the plethora of children’s games that revolve around poo (Doggy Doo, Og on the Bog, Fishin’ for Floaters, etc), many games have been resurrected by uncreative toy manufacturers.

However, many toys from your childhood have been relegated to the attic of our memories – toys that your friends had that stirred you into paroxysms of envy, toys from your long-forgotten favourite TV shows, and toys that were just bizarre.

Boglin puppets, ALF the alien, and even a hugely popular anthropomorphic rat in a jumper were all must-buys.

So put aside your search for your kids’ scatological must-haves and instead… Read the full story

It is easy to get wrapped up in yourself when Christmas comes along.

Organising presents, visits to family, booking panto trips and squeezing Christmas parties into your busy diary probably doesn’t leave time for much else.

We’re potentially all a bit guilty of not thinking of much else but what to buy our friends and family and where our next mince pie is coming from.

But for some people, Christmas is a tough time to get through – loneliness, struggling to make ends meet or suffering with mental health.

There are some really easy ways to make the festive period a little better for those in crisis.

So – who’s paying? (Picture: Ella Byworth for Metro.co.uk)

A few weeks ago I went out on a date. It was a first date, with someone I’d met online, so we’d never met before.

We got together in the evening and had dinner in a lovely restaurant.

I’m 39 and single – why is it so hard for people to believe I’m happy?

It wasn’t crazily expensive and I only had one glass of wine and no pudding.

Throughout the meal he’d been very gentlemanly, including holding the doors open for me coming in. We’d gotten… Read the full story

10 ways to cope with depression fatigue

Depression leaves you feeling constantly exhausted (Picture: Liberty Antonia Sadler for Metro.co.uk)

I’m tired. I’m really, really tired.

And it’s not the sort of tired an early night, a triple-shot coffee or a jog around the park can fix.

I’m tired because I live with clinical depression.

Please don’t call me a ‘service user’ – I’m a mental health patient

For me, constant fatigue is one of the worst symptoms of mental illness. It saps the joy out of life and makes everything feel 20 times harder.

The relationship between depression and sleep is a ‘chicken and egg’ situation.

Why you should dump someone for being bad in bed

It’s not wrong to expect better sex than you’re getting (Picture: Ella Byworth for Metro.co.uk)

Sounds harsh, doesn’t it – giving someone the boot just because the sex isn’t up to scratch?

But I firmly believe that if your sex life is crap then you need to start looking elsewhere.

Pack your bags and set your sights on a sexier future.

Sex matters because it’s a cornerstone of any intimate relationship and without it you’re just friends.

Of course there are situations in which it’s not that simple – if one half of a loving couple has an illness or injury that makes conventional sex impossible, for example – but I’m talking here about relationships with physical… Read the full story

Gluten-free Yorkshire puddings recipe – 5 top tips for making the perfect addition to your Sunday roast

Make the most amazing gluten-free-free Yorkshire puddings
Yorkshire puddings should be big, fluffy pillows (Picture: Vicki Montague/The Free From Fairy)

Yorkshire puddings are a peculiarly British thing.

Back as far as 1737 they have been made as a way of making use of the fat that dripped into the dripping pan while meat roasted.

Nowadays no self-respecting roast beef recipe can be served without these light, fluffy sides.

Essentially made from a pancake batter baked in the oven, they are strangely difficult to master without the use of wheat flour.

When I first started trying to make them gluten-free I had very limited success.

Rather than big, fluffy pillows they were flat, solid, tasteless bricks.

Sound familiar?

We have to start recognising male post natal depression

Male Postnatal Depression is so under represented that there genuinely wasn’t an option to use a picture of a man here. (Picture: Monica Muffin)

To be honest with you, this started out as an opinion piece titled ‘male postnatal depression isn’t real’.

Because I thought I knew that it wasn’t.

You see, I thought that if a woman carried a baby for nine months (or thereabouts) and then went through the stress and pain of birth, she was the one who was likely to suffer afterwards.

And on some level, I still stand by that.

Postnatal depression is a huge and terrible experience for a woman. It’s still stigmatized and women still live in… Read the full story

This is Max and Grace.

They’re two blind little kitties who’ve been adopted out of their shelter in San Francisco.

And they’ve become best pals.

Yep, they’re just two furry feline housemates these days who do everything together.

Max was just a kitten when his eyes ruptured and had to be removed – which is a lot for any animal.

He was adopted first and once he’d grown up a bit and felt settled in his home, his humans came across another blind cat at the Saving GrRescuesuce, where they’d adopted him.

Enter: Grace.

Although Max was a bit weary of Grace to begin with, they’ve become the perfect support for each other and now… Read the full story
