How to get through Christmas when you don’t have parents

You can enjoy Christmas Day even if it’s in a less traditional way (Picture: Getty)

Christmas is a time to love, give and share – if the Hallmark edition is to be believed.

Families gather, traditions are upheld and the whole country gets a little bit giddy from a John Lewis advert.

But what if you don’t have any family? Or your family is missing people that you were close to?

This is when Christmas can be a struggle full of apprehension, sadness and frustration.

I’ve always dreaded Christmas. As a child I hated the questions of ‘what are you doing for Christmas?’ and ‘how was your Christmas?’ I still do.

In my single-parent, half Indian household where… Read the full story

If you thought you were obsessed with all things Lego, you’ve just been trumped.

A Lego-obsessed family have built an 8ft-tall Victorian dollhouse made of 450,000 bricks in their living room.

It’s the biggest sculpture Mike Addis, 59, and Catherine Weightman, 54, have ever built in their family home in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, over the last 25 years.

Among their creations, which they put together every Christmas, are Christmas-themed Daleks, a polar bear, Olympic 2012 mascots, angels and a cathedral.

Puts your Lego making skills to shame.

Working out can make you feel great.

You get a buzz when you lift a heavier weight or shave off a few seconds from your PB and sometimes it just feels, particularly when you’ve just started training, as if your progress will never stop.

When your body fat is dropping and you’re seeing results, it’s a wonderful feeling.

On social media, gym goers constantly post about how great a workout was or how brilliant it’s made them feel. But what happens when it all goes wrong?

You turn up to the gym and can’t lift what you were lifting last week or you feel fatigued when you go… Read the full story

This year my list is a little different to my usual requests.

I would like a fence to go around our front garden, so that the kids can play on their bikes and scooters without me worrying about them.

The top 7 presents all parents fear their children getting at Christmas

I’ve realised that my favourite Christmas present as an adult was given to me the Christmas after my mum died.

Christmas can be a complete nightmare (Picture: Liberty Antonia Sadler for Metro.co.uk)

For most of us, food is one of the first things that comes to mind when thinking about Christmas.

That might be the mince pies we’re going to bake, the endless chocolates in the office, the lunches and dinners and nibbles with friends – or the main event itself.

Why hundreds of teens marched on Westminster for free periods

Last night, hundreds of teenagers and women descended on White Hall as part of the #FreePeriods protest.

Dressed in red and holding banners any art college would be proud of, gangs of gal pals rocked up to demand that girls who receive free school meals also be given free sanitary products.

If parliament listens, that’s 208,000 girls who’ll be eligible for free tampons and towels. And if that sounds like a lot, it is; according to Plan International UK, 1 in 10 girls can’t afford to buy menstrual products.

We’re talking about a huge number of young women who are having to stuff their knickers with socks or… Read the full story

It’s Christmas so hangovers are pretty much inevitable.

But rather than silently suffering or ordering every greasy thing in sight, is there a way we can eliminate a hangover quicker than dialing Dominos?

Priya Tew, a dietitian, tells Metro.co.uk that there are many ways to alleviate a hangover.

‘The key nutrients you need the most are B1, water and potassium,’ she explains.

‘When you drink alcohol your blood sugars lower, part of the hangover can be due to these low blood sugars.

‘Eating foods that bring your blood sugars back up and keep them stable will therefore help.

So what foods can we scoff to get us back to a semi-normal… Read the full story

Christmas is an interesting time if you’re a Muslim. If you celebrate it, you’re usually met with surprise or disdain but if you don’t, you’re accused of not integrating.

Not so much has been made of how Muslims volunteer and help vulnerable people in society during the festive period.

Amidst rampant Islamophobia this year and terror attacks, it’s unsurprising that the good contributions by Muslims are overshadowed.

But now, Muslims’ dedication to volunteering over the festive season been picked up on by Tory MP Anna Soubry and Labour MP Wes Streeting, culminating in the #AVeryMerryMuslimChristmas.

The hashtag has since gone viral, celebrating the charitable work Muslim charities… Read the full story

Are magnetic lashes worth the faff?

In the world of beauty, false lashes are pretty bloody intimidating.

They instill more fear than the prospect of liquid eyeliner, more dread than needing to take a sip of tea immediately after applying matte lipstick, more trepidation than the application of highlighter that doesn’t make you look like an oily mess.

Well, for me they do, anyway. I’ve never figured out false lashes, and I find the concept of fiddling around with glue right next to my eyes mildly horrifying, so I never learned.

I’ve tried a few times, but I can’t quite seem to nail it. I’ve read every tip and watched every tutorial, and yet each time I’ve… Read the full story

Some people actively avoid their neighbours. From parking and mess to noise, it’s not hard to see why you wouldn’t want to engage in small talk.

But not this Floridian resident.

Why you ask? Because this neighbour has a manatee mailbox.

And that’s not all.

The manatee gets dressed up throughout the year for special occasions including Halloween and Christmas, when the manatee dons a Santa costume.

‘My neighbour has this manatee mailbox he dresses up throughout the year and I’m kind of obsessed with it,’ Marley, a University of Central Florida student, said on Twitter.
