Obese staff should start work later in order to avoid any anxiety about travelling during rush hour.

That’s the recommendation put forward by a government advisor at the European Congress on Obesity in Vienna.

Professor Stephan Bevan from the Institute of Employment Studies says that obese people who are worried about travelling on public transport should arrive later or work from home in order to protect their mental health.

‘It can be working time, it can be having a bit of understanding that someone might need to turn up at 10 o’clock because they have trouble with transport or anxiety about transport,’ he says.

‘I don’t think enough [employers]… Read the full story

I’m telling you, it’s a nightmare (Picture: Ella Byworth for Metro.co.uk)

Us Brits aren’t exactly known for our summer style, and never less so than when it comes to summer dressing for work.

It’s hardly our fault: our island only gets 15 minutes of sun every other July, and even then there’s always a chance of a shower.

We can never be prepared. There aren’t any rules.

When most of us try to approach wildlife, they seem to scarper at lightening speed.

Not so for photographer Steve Gray, however. He’s about as close as you can get to being a real-life Dr Dolittle.

The 39-year-old has been snapping birds, voles and rats for the past three years and has developed such an intimate bond with the animals that they happily approach him with no fear.

And that means that he’s able to take shots of wildlife from remarkably close quarters.

‘There is no better feeling, in my mind,’ says Steve, from Whitwell, Derbyshire.

‘The trust that develops is unbelievable. I’ve had robins perched on my hand with their backs to… Read the full story

Whatever the newly appointed Duchess of Sussex wears, we want.

But while you might not be able to afford Meghan’s Givenchy wedding dress or Stella McCartney gown, it doesn’t cost much to recreate her paired-down beauty look.

It turns out that Meghan, like the rest of us, is a sucker for Maybelline’s chunk mascaras.

And her favourite is apparently the £8.99 Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara.

Her former markup artist Lydia Sellers worked with Meghan on Suits between 2015 and 2107, and she’s told Hello! that it was actually Meghan who introduced her to the Maybelline wand.

‘I keep it stocked in my kit now at all times thanks to… Read the full story

There are plenty of one-day vegan-friendly festivals happening these days.

But finally, a proper plant-based weekender is set to happen in the UK this August – and it’s also going to be waste free.

No Planet B is being billed as the UK’s first zero-waste vegan festival, due to take place in the Cotswolds on 17-19 August.

Currently being crowdfunding on Kickstarter, the three-day extravaganza describes itself as ‘TED Talk meets music festival’, with classes, workshops and talks by people like vegan activist James Aspey, and She Grows Wild founder, Louise Smith.

‘The more you learn about these movements, the more you see how intrinsically linked… Read the full story

Though you may have heard of agoraphobia, many hold the misconception that it’s simply the fear of open spaces.

It’s far more complicated than that too.

How should we discuss suicide with children who have been impacted by it?

When I was 10 my guitar teacher killed herself.

All pupils who had lessons with her were called into the school hall in the middle of class.

‘What’s going on?’ I remember a boy in front turning around and asking me.

‘I dunno, she’s probably dead,’ I joked.

She was.

We were told that she’d been ill and had passed away suddenly, and that was that.

However, a day later the girl I shared lessons with told me that the teacher had ended her own life. She found out because a family friend was the coroner – I’m not sure if she knew because her parents told her, or if she overheard them talking.

Thus, I found out all the details of how she did it. I later read about it in the local newspaper.

This was my first experience of suicide.

At 10 years old, with no understanding of mental health, and thinking the world revolved around me, I thought her death was my fault. I assumed because… Read the full story

In the world of high-end fashion, anything goes.

Stick a designer label on it and even the most suspect of designs becomes art.

Just look at Balenciaga.

The Basque luxury fashion house is no stranger to creating ugly statement pieces; it was, after all, responsible for the current ugly trainer craze.

And now it’s turning its attention towards menswear – specifically shirts.

For £1,085 you can buy a lovely double shirt. Yes, that’s a striped short-sleeved number with a long sleeved shirt sewn on top.

Balenciaga claims that the design offers wearers two wearing options – you can either wear the long sleeves as a bizarre front panel design, or as a fake double… Read the full story

‘The Carrie Bradshaw school of journalism’: why lifestyle writing has balls

Confessional journalism can be a form of therapy for its readers (Picture: Ella Byworth for Metro.co.uk)

My ex said lifestyle writing is from the Carrie Bradshaw school of journalism, all fluff and no substance.

But he’s missing the point.

In fact, he’s short-sighted, as misguided as someone looking for foie gras in a Tesco Express.

True, it isn’t hard news – that rolling diet of it’s just happened, or is about to happen, so it must be important and relevant.

To the unenlightened, our stories, lifestyle stories, are free-floating helium balloons.

But take it from someone who knows, they are anchored down, recording real human experience, however absurd or mundane.

MAC Cosmetics mocked for suhoor makeup tutorial because no one wants to glam up at 3am

For anyone who doesn’t know, suhoor is the meal Muslims eat right before the sun rises so they can fast the following day, kind of like a pre-dawn breakfast.

MAC Cosmetics clearly didn’t get the memo as they launched a makeup tutorial…for suhoor. That’s right, they have a glam routine for those waking up in the middle of the night, eating a bit of cereal and heading back into bed.

Because who doesn’t want to have smokey, gold-rimmed eye makeup as they fumble around the kitchen, desperately trying not to wake… Read the full story

When body positivity advocate Tesia Kline tried to photograph her new bikini, she accidentally snapped it in lighting that showed off her cellulite.

Now for many women, that picture would have been immediately consigned to the trash…probably followed by a few hours dwelling on their ‘imperfection’.

But not Tesia.

Instead of deleting it, the 27-year-old decided to share the picture, alongside the shot she’d really intended to take for Instagram.

‘I wanted to share it because I feel like there are millions of women out there who are so insecure about something that it’s normal,’ Tesia says.

‘They try to “cure” it like it’s some kind of disorder.’

White people invited to pay for black people’s drinks in ‘reparations happy hour’

A bar in Portland, Oregon in the U.S, handed out $10 (£7.50) bills to all the black, brown and minority ethnicities that walked into their establishment.

The money was scrambled from white people’s donations, who were asked not to attend the ‘reparations happy hour’.

That meant their drinks were paid for by their white counterparts as a small and symbolic way to compensate for the hardships and suffering faced by such communities.

Cameron Whitten, the 27-year-old activist who organised the event, said while it in no way made up for the horrors of slavery and contemporary injustices, it was about solidarity.

You can form strong bonds without being face-to-face (Picture: Ella Byworth for Metro.co.uk)

It’s a running joke in my family that my life pretty much revolves around social media.

Some of it can be explained away by the fact that almost all of my professional work is online, but there’s only so much ‘research’ one can get away with before others realise that you’re actually just nosing through Twitter for the latest gossip.

But there’s another reason I love sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

I’m autistic, and I struggle with communication.

If you’re standing up, you’d better take a seat, pal.

We’ve just been informed that the baked beans served in Wetherspoon aren’t vegan.

The issue was first highlighted when vegan Robyn Edwards posted a photo of a customer notice on Facebook, that was displayed at her local ‘spoons.

It read: ‘Heinz has informed us that the Heinz beans sold on our menu are not suitable for vegans.

‘The following dish is affected: Jacket potato with beans.’

We got straight on the blower to Wetherspoon to find out what’s going on, and they confirmed that yes, the beans they use aren’t vegan.

Encouraging obese people to start work late isn’t the way to tackle fat-shaming

Fat-shaming on public transport seems to be a relatively common affair.

It seems to be particularly endemic on aeroplanes, with stories of larger passengers being humiliated at 30,000 ft being published seemingly every other week.

But it also happens on buses and trains.

We’ve all seen folk grimace on the underground when an obese person squeezes themselves into the seat next to them.

To combat the anxiety that, understandably, overweight people can feel… Read the full story

Gin brand Tanqueray has just launched a limited edition savoury flavour of gin just in time for summer.

We’ve tried a number of sweet gins, including grapefruit, elderflower and even Parma Violets, but this new gin, created with the help of bartender Jason Crawley, is made using lovage – a perennial herb that’s used in cooking and is perfect for adding into salads, soups and stews.

Alongside the herb, other botanicals found in the gin include nettle, coriander, juniper, chamomile and cubeb pepper.

The Tanqueray Lovage is described as being ‘herbaceous, celery-like and earthy’.
