What is it like getting married on Christmas day

December is the most popular month for marriage proposals, and Christmas day is the the number one day for couples to get engaged.

But how many people actually get married on the day? After all, it would mean all subsequent anniversaries fall on the most festive time of the year, which would probably cause a strain on the wallet.

One couple who paid no mind to such worries spoke to Metro.co.uk about why they decided to get hitched on Christmas day.

And they say they have no regrets.

Holly Parker and Hank chose to elope and get married on Christmas day (Picture: Holly Parker)

On 25 December 2005, Holly Parker and Hank eloped to Asheville, North Carolina where they got married in an intimate ceremony without their loved ones.

Holly, a graphic arts business owner and Hank, a musician, grew close due to their mutual Christian upbringing and so it made sense to tie the knot on the birthday of Jesus.

‘Being born and raised Christian, but having strayed from the faith during our 20s, we wanted to re-commit to Jesus on the day love was born,’ Holly told Metro.co.uk.

‘We knew that for the people we wanted to invite, committing to a wedding on Christmas day could be an interruption for both our families, so we eloped.

‘We secured a bed and breakfast in Asheville and with their permission, held the ceremony in their formal sitting room with the help of a pastor.

(Picture: Holly Parker)

‘We got married, amongst teary-eyed strangers, but the moment was totally ours before the God who made us His own.

‘We do not regret anything about the ceremony. It was exactly what we wanted.  It was intensely intimate so we were able to focus on the importance of what we were doing.  Our families were both satisfied.  They completely understood.

‘We were the only ones who got married that night in that bed and breakfast. The owners held a huge dinner, inviting all of their neighbours and friends, making us the guests of honour. It was pure magic and I wouldn’t change a thing about that day.’

(Picture: Holly Parker)

Being devoted Christians, Holly explained how Christmas day is about celebrating their love but also the love of Jesus.

‘On the day, we celebrate half and half, once we are alone on Christmas day, that time is ours. We watch the video that another guest took and quietly settle into each other.

‘Celebrating our wedding on Christmas day was deeply spiritual. The minister said, “between you is a veil, God will lift that veil as you say your vows so that your words will penetrate the others hearts.” And He was there, tears flowed, the vows did penetrate. Two horribly broken people were made whole.

‘To us, the day was about our union before God, but with God as well. It’s not wholly about us as individuals. But instead, a reminder of the true love that’s possible by relying on the Savior we celebrate. We believe that if we put Jesus between us, we will love each other properly.’

What it’s like to spend Christmas day in hospital

Christmas is meant to be the most wonderful time of the year. The most exciting time of the year.

Most of us will be looking forward to an early night tonight, to wake up bright for tomorrow, to spend all morning opening presents and looking forward to Christmas dinner.

But what happens when you’re sick, and have to spend it in hospital?

Holly McCormack, 33, stayed in a mental health hospital in Paisley just outside of Glasgow last year, after going through a very dark time.

Holly says that despite struggling, and being in a hospital, the staff made it as festive as possible. There was even a Christmas party for patients organised by the recreational therapy group, featuring songs, dancing, some juice, a buffet and Father Christmas appeared at the end of the event to give everyone a chocolate Santa.

Holly tells Metro.co.uk: ‘In the run up to Christmas, there were more sweets and juice being put out for all the patients.

‘On Christmas Day itself we all woke up to a wee gift. It was a box of Malteasers but it was very much appreciated as it left you feeling like you still mattered and encouraged you to be festive.

‘That may have been a small touch but it was a nice one.

‘On Christmas Day I was able to go out with my family to have Christmas dinner before going back to the ward.

‘It was nice to be able to do that. Before I went out, one of the patients washed and dried my hair for me, which was nice and relaxing.’

Holly says it was a ‘very different experience’ being in hospital over Christmas, but she felt incredibly supported by her mental health team who had her ‘best interest at heart’.

Luke Sawyer, 33, from Wolverhampton, was in hospital for Christmas two years ago, due to his ulcerative colitis, a form of inflammatory bowel disease.

He was in a really bad flare, and was admitted to New Cross Hospital.

Luke says the staff made an effort to decorate the ward a little bit, but due to infection control rules they ‘couldn’t do too much’.

There was the option of a Christmas dinner on the menu – but apparently that was just some turkey, potatoes and a little veg.

Luke says: ‘My now-wife visited me every visiting time apart from one Saturday night where I forcibly made her go out with her friends as visiting me constantly wasn’t very fair and she needed a break.

‘Either my mum or dad would visit me once a day and would occasionally bring my nan or sister too. They all came on Christmas day.

‘At first I was dreading being in for Christmas but as time went on, I got so ill that I didn’t really concentrate on what day it was.

‘Looking back it didn’t bother me too much.’

Sarah, 23, was in hospital on Christmas day back in 2011 after she was diagnosed with pneumonia.

She was admitted on Christmas day, in the early hours of the morning, and says she remembers feeling so gutted.

‘Christmas is always a really big thing for my family,’ she said.

(Picture: Ella Byworth for Metro.co.uk)

‘I have little siblings and so it’s always really special. We get pretty drunk throughout the day and everyone has a really great time. It’s never boring in our house.

‘And so when I was admitted in the early hours of Christmas morning, with severe chest pains, I felt really down.

‘Not just because I was poorly and in hospital, but because I felt like I’d let my family down and ruined Christmas for everyone. I felt really guilty because we always look forward to the day every year.’

Sarah says it was very lonely in hospital. Her mum stayed by her side, but the wards were fairly empty which meant it was very quiet and felt quite isolating.

She was also so poorly that she was in and out of consciousness and unable to really focus on anything going on around her – she just remembers silence and darkness.

There were no decorations for Sarah, because she was placed on an emergency ward ready to move to her own room the next day. And so she spent the night feeling incredibly un-festive, feeling like the only person in the world who was unable to celebrate Christmas.

‘There weren’t any decorations and I just remember either total silence or the beeping of machines’, said Sarah.

‘I was finally discharged a couple of weeks into January and I was so relieved – I’ve been in hospital a lot for various things, and spending Christmas there was probably the most depressing time of all.’

This year, Alex Carver, 40, is due to go into hospital for a hernia operation.

Speaking before today, Alex said she would much rather be at home over Christmas – not to celebrate it but to ignore it, admitting she’s a bit of a ‘Bah Humbug’ kind of person’.

She said: ‘I don’t mind being in over Christmas, though not being a fan of the season I am a little concerned about being more exposed to Christmas than I would be at home.

‘I don’t really have any expectations. I’ve not spent that much time in hospitals, except for quick appointments, so I don’t have much idea what they are like.’

She’s aware that some people make an effort to make hospitals festive, especially on long stay wards, but she doesn’t quite know what to expect.

Christmas as an orphan: How to cope when you’ve lost your parents

0

How to cope at Xmas if you're an orphan
(Picture: Ella Byworth for Metro.co.uk)

Christmas is about family. Spending time with your loved ones, and seeing family members you don’t normally get to see.

It’s about cringing at your dad’s awful jokes (worse than the ones in Christmas crackers), helping your mum out with the Christmas dinner and putting on a fake smile to thank your auntie for the awful present they bought you.

But Christmas is hard when you’ve lost your parents – you’re an orphan

When everyone around them is sharing photos of themselves laughing with their mum and dad, some people are spending Christmas wishing for one more day with the loved one they lost.

27-year-old Codie lost her mum suddenly in July. She had Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease but took a very quick turn in hospital.

Codie was heartbreaking and says that ‘even now it doesn’t seem at all real’.

She tells Metro.co.uk: ‘I also felt pretty cross because it seems unfair to be an orphan at a young age, and I was also pregnant at the time so I felt very hard-done by.

‘We’d promised mum we would spend a Christmas with her, as we usually have it up here with my husband’s family (as we both tend to work Christmas Eve).

(Picture: Mmuffin for Metro.co.uk)

‘When we found out we were pregnant and due in December we had to change plans but we’re hoping to do it again another year.

‘This is the least festive I’ve ever felt.

‘I don’t know if it’s the fact I had a baby a week ago, or missing my mum but I don’t feel Christmassy at all.

‘I’m hoping I perk up tomorrow as Christmas is my favourite time of year and having a new baby it should be extra special, but I’m very aware of my mum not being around for a call.’

Anna, 22, lost her mum when she was 18. She died from complications related to her alcoholism.

Anna says: ‘I didn’t really have the normal experience of grief – there was a lot of anger and some relief to an extent, as I had cared for her through her alcoholism and nobody else knew about it.

‘To be honest, I still have those feelings now, although as time’s gone on, while I don’t miss her in the conventional sense, I miss what we didn’t have, like a normal mother-daughter, supportive relationship.

‘I didn’t enjoy Christmas for many years before she died, and I still don’t. At times I have been incredibly suicidal around Christmas, and last year had to spend a week in a respite centre shortly after Christmas.

‘I am really dreading Christmas. I come home to my grandma at Christmas, and she isn’t supportive of mental health at all, so there is a lot of belittling and emotional abuse surrounding that.

Why a nap on Christmas day feels so damn good/is such a good idea
(Picture: Ella Byworth for Metro.co.uk)

‘I think the only solace with Christmas now is I’m not picking up after my mum being drunk all day.

‘Christmas is a lot quieter now though – my girlfriend lives on the other side of the country, so it’s just me and my grandma at Christmas. It can get very lonely.’

Anna says she is currently coping by talking to her girlfriend and friends, and focusing on her university work. She’s trying to do things she enjoys, like reading and colouring.

She said: ‘It’s hard because I have no support in my mental health from my grandma, whereas at uni everyone knows and is understanding, so it’s hard having to put a mask on.

‘Tomorrow is going to be a quiet day, I think we’ll open some presents, have some lunch, and watch TV.’

Nick, 25, lost his mother in 1996 and his dad in 2013.

His mum had cancer and his dad had colitis.

He said: ‘I was pretty upset at the time and now. Although I’m doing okay, I feel empty and a bit disconnected from family life.

‘I do enjoy Christmas, especially as I have a niece and nephew who love it.

‘I do look forward to it but suffering from depression, I am aware that Christmas sometimes triggers it.

‘We spend Christmas with in-laws and it’s enjoyable especially as they are understanding.

‘My advice is to not to force yourself to enjoy it or feel guilty for being sad, just go with it and take what you can.’

Woody lost his mother in April 2014. She had passed away from lung disease due to a lifetime of smoking. Her death was quite sudden.

Woody says losing his mum ‘hit hard’ as he also lost his dad when he was four.

He said: ‘ I’d been bought up solely by mum – she never moved on with anyone so we were always very close.

‘Last Christmas was the first without her and it was very hard.

‘We grew up in a family where Christmas always revolves around mum, and being at her house. So we spent it as a family at my brother’s but it felt quite hollow and there were a few tears.

‘I’m hoping this Christmas will be easier… time is a healer right?

‘I do find myself pausing for breath now and again and holding back the tears. I have children and I don’t want Christmas to be a sad time for them so I put on a brave face, which is hard as I suffer with PTSD and anxiety, but I’ll do my best.’

Dipti Tate, a grief author and hypnotherapist, says the best way to get through Christmas without your parents is to ‘be kind to yourself’ and ‘allow yourself to be sad or emotions’.

She said: ‘Give your emotions permission to exist.

‘Shift your mindset. Instead of totally focusing on the loss, like I used to do when I saw the poinsettias in the shops because they reminded me of my mum, I decided to buy all my close friends a poinsettia so I was still able to gift it – which made me feel better!

‘Remember it’s okay not to be okay and reach out for help – you may feel alone and isolated, but you are not. Even if it’s a social media shout out for support, make sure you reach out.’

Mixed Up: ‘My mum was a trailblazer for shunning arranged marriage’

0
0

Welcome to Mixed Up, a series looking at the highs, lows and unique experiences of being mixed-race.

Mixed-race is the fastest-growing ethnic group in the UK. It means your parents hail from two (or more) different ethnicities, leaving you somewhere in the middle.

In 2001, when the ‘mixed’ categories were first introduced to the national census, mixed-race people made up 1.3% of the population. Fast-forward 10 years, and that figure almost doubles to 2.3%.

It’s a trajectory that’s unlikely to slow down.

Alongside the unique pleasures and benefits of being exposed to multiple cultures, being mixed comes with complexities, conflicts and innate contradictions.

For many, it’s about occupying two identities simultaneously, reconciling the differences and trying to carve out a space to exist between the two.

The mainstream understanding of being mixed-race most often refers to people who are white and black Caribbean, or white and black African. But the voices of the mixed-race diaspora extend far beyond this.

Mixed Up aims to elevate those voices, look deeper at the nuanced realities of being mixed-race and provide an insight into the inner workings of this rapidly growing ethnic group.

Giulia Macgarr has an Indian mother and British father. Despite feeling somewhat detached from her Punjabi heritage, she has made active steps to reconnect over the last few years.

(Picture: Jerry Syder for Metro.co.uk)

‘I’m half Indian, half British. My dad was born in Nottingham, and my mum comes from right up in the north of India, Amritsar, in the Punjab,’ Giulia tells Metro.co.uk.

Giulia finds that because of her ‘white-passing’ appearance, she’s regularly forced to explain her heritage. Which is understandably draining.

‘I love coming from a mixed background, but there are some elements that I find really frustrating. Like many mixed-race people, I get the “where are you from-from?” question. When I answer, it’s often met with disregard or disbelief – people will say things like; “Indian?! – that’s the last thing I would have guessed”.

‘It undermines me, and who I am, my identity.

‘I don’t think people realise how frustrating it is to be told, a couple of times a week, that my heritage is something that’s shocking.

‘I used to say, “oh yeah, my mum’s quite pale”, or feel like I had to explain or justify other people’s surprise. But now I just don’t bother. I just think – if someone doesn’t have the scope to understand my heritage, then I’m not too interested in getting to know them more.’

Like many children of immigrants, Giulia’s family background is characterised by lost connections. There is a distance there, and a history she can only grasp at through second-hand stories.

‘I never met any of my Indian grandparents,’ Giulia explains.

‘My mum lost her mother when she was three, and my maternal granddad died before I was born. So the Indian influence in my life isn’t as strong as I would have liked.

‘I would have loved to have gotten to know them, and I often wonder what they would have thought of me and my brother.

Giulia’s parents on their wedding day (Picture: Giulia Macgarr/Metro.co.uk)

‘Having said that, when I was younger we did do more typically Indian and Hindu things, like visiting my aunt’s house for prayers, celebrating Divali, visiting the temple and receiving money during the Hindu festival of Raki.

‘My family isn’t religious at all, but it was still nice to take part, and the Hindu religion has a lot of influence on Indian culture – so I liked feeling connected to that side of things.’

It’s important for Giulia to feel like she understands her own history. She may not have been born or brought up in India, but she still feels drawn to her mother’s birthplace, and longs for re-connection.

‘I did travel to India for six months in 2013, and that helped to connect me with my Motherland.

‘There were things I saw out there, things which I hadn’t even realised were culturally Indian, that I had been doing all my life. And I felt like things just clicked nicely in to place for me when I was there.

‘My Indian family, who I met out there, were also so warm and excitable, which was quite unfamiliar compared to spending time with my white relatives!’

Giulia in Kerala in 2013 (Picture: Giulia Macgarr/Metro.co.uk)

There are certain harmful stereotypes when it comes to the perception of Indian women. That they’re timid or submissive is a prevalent one. Giulia says her own mother couldn’t be further away from this concept. Her strength and relentless individualism flips the old cliché on its head.

‘I was brought up in a progressive household,’ Giulia tells us.

‘My mum never subscribed to a traditional gender role at all. That’s definitely helped with my own development as a women.

‘I think it was almost inevitable that my mum had to be different. Mixed couples were very uncommon when my parents got together. Although now, most of my family friends are mixed.

‘We have Margie and Billeh, a white Jewish Brooklyner with her husband from Somaliland, Denny who is white Welsh and Daniel who is Senegalese, Richard who is white British and Yumi who is Japanese.

‘For me it’s normal. And beautiful. I get on well with their kids, because we’re already on a level.

‘My mum was really a trailblazer for her time. She was the only one of her family not to have an arranged marriage.

‘She was put in to boarding school in the Himalayas at the age of three. She moved to the UK when she was 15, and studied to be a doctor at a time when there were just a handful of women taking medicine.

‘So she’s really quite different from many of the other Indian women I know, in my family at least. She earns more than my dad, she travels extensively, she’s fiercely independent and she doesn’t take any nonsense. She refuses housework, pointblank.

‘Having such a strong Indian mother has definitely had a big impact on me. I do wonder if she’d have been different if she had been brought up by her parents in India, instead of at school.’

It wasn’t only Giulia’s mother who was determined to do her own thing growing up. Her British dad also went against his parents and family background, particularly when it came to religion.

‘My father rejected his Christian background, his dad was a Methodist Minister as part of the British colonial mission to Nigeria, but my father isn’t religious at all.

Little Giulia with her Dad (Picture: Giulia Macgarr/Metro.co.uk)

‘He too went to boarding school and ended up rejecting a lot of the authority and systems he didn’t agree with.

‘He was a hippie. He occupied London’s Centrepoint to highlight homelessness, he’s always been one to campaign for social justice.’

Giulia doesn’t shy away from the conflicts that come with her mixed heritage. Colonialism is something that has shaped the family history of both her parents – the oppressors and the oppressed.

‘I almost revel in the idea of being a product of the coloniser and the colonised – because it’s not perfect,’ she explains.

‘I hate the idea of purity, and love the idea that the simple fact of my existence interrupts misplaced notions of nationhood, belonging and nationality. All things that we are seeing resurface again with a vengeance in 2018.’

In building her own relationships and family, Giulia values cultural and historical diversity.

‘I got married last year and I love that my husband comes from a different background to me – he’s half Spanish, half Portuguese. If we were all the same it would be so very boring.

Giulia and Pepe on their wedding day (Picture: Giulia Macgarr/Metro.co.uk)

‘But there can be racism and ignorance in the communities he’s from too. Sometimes I get away with it. It’s easier for me to be accepted because I pass as a white woman.’

Giulia recognises the struggles that come with being a mixed-race woman in Britain today. A lot of the difficulties come from the inevitable feelings of isolation that many globally disparate families feel.

‘I think being mixed-race can be tough, particularly when you don’t have a strong connection with extended family, as you feel a bit like you’re just in a bubble. But at least for me that bubble is a safe space, and I fill it with people I like.

‘It can also be tiring in a work setting, as you’re mostly wildly underrepresented as a mixed-race woman. You constantly have to push for diversity, and that responsibility can be exhausting.’

Mixed Up is a weekly series focused on telling the stories of mixed-race people. Next week we speak to Hamilton actor, Obi, who is Irish and Nigerian. His Dad came to the UK as a child refugee following the civil war.

Having a child with Down’s syndrome isn’t easy, but it is extraordinary

‘Had we undergone pre-natal testing and decided not to go ahead with the pregnancy, we’d have missed the most extraordinary journey.’ (Picture: Martin Figura)

When I was told that my daughter Amy had Down’s syndrome it seemed, in that moment, the greatest catastrophe of my life.

But when I walked through the corridor to pass on the news to my wife, I began the process of re-configuring it into a positive, a gift even.

Much like the parents at the centre of the recent BBC Four drama There She Goes, whose daughter is born with a severe learning disability, we were embarking on a parenting experience we hadn’t planned for.

As tough as being Amy’s dad has been at times, I believe the challenges children with Down’s syndrome bring are outweighed by the blessings a million times over. I can’t speak for all parents, but I think the exuberant and disproportionate response to life’s small pleasures and triumphs is at the heart of it.

The impact Amy has extends beyond her immediate family: any Facebook post involving her is instantly popular.

She pretty much does what the hell she likes and when she likes, regardless of social convention. She will lick her plate clean if she wants to and she will stick her head under the cubicle door to tell the current incumbent to ‘hurry up man’ when she needs the loo.

And people delight in these things – she does what we would like to do.

Don’t get me wrong, we’ve had our fair share of challenges, the biggest being Amy’s health issues.

She was born with a heart murmur and Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), and had to have a procedure in her first year, followed by another at age 12 when she contracted Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA), resulting in five general anaesthetics in 24 hours – it was a very anxious and dangerous time.

Amy is now 35 (Picture: Martin Figura)

When Amy was two years old, we had a son, Sean.

The impact of a child with disabilities on a family are inventible. Amy’s capacity to share activities with a healthy growing boy were limited. What happened was that we split into two: Amy and I doing what Amy likes; Sean and his mum making sure that he gets to do what he likes.

The overlapping opportunities were few, and her mum and I split when Amy was about 16.

It was a long time coming, difficult but amicable, and not because of our daughter. But, if I’m honest, the contingencies of having Amy did shape, and to some extent fracture, our family.

Amy acts as the perfect example of how we shape our past into a story we can tell ourselves and others, how we move beyond our catastrophes and live.

She doesn’t mess about, she reconfigures her catastrophes (losing at bowling for example) in real time by simply declaring herself the winner, there and then.

Amy has brought so much joy to my life and others.

She’s 35 now – in robust health, utterly unreasonable, stubborn and magnificent.

Had we undergone pre-natal testing and decided not to go ahead with the pregnancy, we’d have missed the most extraordinary journey.

The world would be poorer without her going about her business in her own sweet and often surprising way.

Mum spends thousands on organising a Christmas dinner for lonely people

A selfless mum has put thousands of pounds of her own money into organising a Christmas dinner for lonely people.

Mo Fayose held a Christmas dinner in Nottingham for more than 100 people with nowhere else to go.

Together with a group of 20 volunteers, Mo cooked enough to serve up to people of all ages at Fenton Court, Fenton Road, Nottingham.

On the menu was turkey, chicken, fish, cauliflower soup, butternut squash and swede soup, salmon canapés, garlic and herb canapés and Brussels sprouts.

Mo, 44, first had the idea while studying to be a mental health nurse when a patient told her some people don’t like Christmas as they have no one to share it with.

She began by holding the event at her own home, but ‘it went viral’ and she needed to find a bigger venue.

The event costs more than £2,000 to put on, with 80% of the funds provided by Mo herself and the rest coming from charitable donations.

As well as the event at Fenton Court, Mo and her volunteers deliver Christmas dinners to people in the community including those who are homeless.

Mo, a full-time charity worker from Basford, Nottingham, who has a daughter aged 19 and a son aged 15, said: ‘This is for people who are isolated – who can’t get out of the house, elderly people, people with children.

‘The oldest person who has attended has been 88.

Christmas Day 2016, Ms Fayose and a team of volunteers cooked three courses for the lonely at Christmas. Mo Fayose, of Nottingham, was asked to remove her charity christmas dinner posters as they were being classed as fly tipping by Nottingham City Council. December 10 2018. Mo who hosts Christmas dinner for about 100 people says she is pleased a council has backed down on threats to fine her over her flyers for the event. Mo Fayose raises money for the gathering herself, spending about ?3,000 to help combat "festive loneliness". She put ads on railings but was told by a city council community protection officer to remove them.

‘I use a mobile cooker in the garden of the building with a marquee.

‘I have volunteers, and we decorate it as if we are having a wedding.

‘There is quite a choice of food. Not everybody eats turkey.

‘We give them presents – everybody will get presents.

‘It will be something useful – not just chocolates.

‘I got the idea for it when I was doing my mental health nursing degree at the University of Nottingham.

‘I was so excited because it was Christmas – but one patient said to me ‘stop it, woman – not everybody likes Christmas’.

‘She said she wasn’t looking forward to Christmas because it’s a lonely time.

‘I then did research into festive loneliness, and found out many people would rather be in hospital than at home, because they wouldn’t be on their own on Christmas day.’

Mo says that the event has also made her realise how lonely she has been since being divorced and finds it ‘fascinating’ when people come together to share their journeys with her.

She said: ‘When people start seeing Christmas stuff on the shelves and the lights go up, it sends people into depression.

‘But if they know there is a group of them in the community, it makes them happy.’

Couple meet for first time at Gatwick Airport before flying to Las Vegas in wedding gear to get married straight away

Two strangers got married yesterday, Christmas Day, after meeting for the first time at an airport in their wedding outfits, before boarding a plane to Las Vegas.

Sarah Edwards, 34, matched with Paul Edwards, 36, on online and within days decided to get hitched.

They matched online on 15 December and exchanged messages and spoke to each other over the phone for the first time on 22 December.

They then spoke again a day later and decided to get married, despite never having met face to face.

They committed to each other and booked a wedding venue – the Bellagio Hotel and Casino.

Meeting for the first time at Gatwick Airport on Christmas Eve, the pair boarded a plane in full wedding gear and jetted off to Las Vegas to get married.

Sarah, a nanny originally from New Zealand but who lives in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, said: ‘We instantly clicked – there was an undeniable connection.

‘I feel like Paul’s my best friend already.

‘We’re not looking at everything through rose-tinted glasses. We know it will be challenging, but we’re willing to work together.

‘I’m usually such a logical person, but all the rules have been thrown out.

‘We’ve both tried to do things the traditional way before and it didn’t work out for either of us.

‘We get on so well and just thought: “Why not have that commitment to actually making a marriage work from the very start?”

‘I’m not interested in just going on dates looking for things I don’t like about that person.

‘I’m committing to making this marriage absolutely work – like they did in the old days.

‘It’s traditional, older generations might have only met their partner once or twice before getting married.

‘It’s similar, we just hadn’t even met before.’

Sarah and Paul, who works in broadcasting, met online on dating app Bumble and instantly hit it off.

She said: ‘I saw his profile, thought he looked nice and loved what he had written about being open and honest.

‘When we matched, I sent him a message.

‘I thought it was funny that his name was Paul as I currently share a house with two other people called Paul – so I said: ‘I’ve already got two Pauls in my life, why not add a third?”

‘He replied to my message saying: “Apparently the third Paul is always the best and I don’t have a Sarah in my life so I guess that would make you number one.”

‘We spoke on the phone on Saturday night for two-and-a-half hours and then again on Sunday morning for an hour-and-a-half.

‘Sunday evening we were chatting away on the phone and calling each other for three hours.

‘I can’t remember who brought it up, but one of us said: “We get on so well – maybe we should get married”.

‘The other one went: “Yeah, maybe we should” and it literally spiralled from there.

‘There was a moment between us where we both thought: “We totally could do this. How amazing would it be if we got married on our first date?”

‘By Monday morning – three days after we’d first started talking – we’d agreed to get married.

‘We both just thought: “Let’s do this”.’

Sarah knew the idea was ‘crazy’ but has decided to let her heart rule over her head.

She said: ‘I know it’s totally crazy – hardly any of my friends are supporting me, in fact, a lot of them are disowning me.

‘I haven’t told my family yet. As they’re on the other side of the world we don’t talk as often as we should.’

Dad-of-two Paul, from Chichester, West Sussex, has two daughters aged 13 and 15 from a previous relationship, and is also yet to tell his children about his new wife.

Sarah has been married before, but it only lasted for six months.

Sarah says the pair get on so well because they are so alike.

She said: ‘Paul’s personality is exactly like mine. We’re both very bubbly, open, honest, we’d do anything for anyone.

‘He’s caring, loyal, silly, a wind up, playful, intelligent and of course, spontaneous and impulsive.

‘We have so much in common. I’ve never met anyone whose brain works like mine but his does.

‘Our minds jump all over the place with a million ideas a day. We both have big goals and dreams.’

Sarah is adamant the couple will go the distance.

She said: ‘Our marriage will work because we’re completely open and honest about everything in our lives. I have faith.

‘If we have any problems, we’ll talk them through.

‘We can talk about absolutely everything – there’s nothing I’d feel uncomfortable discussing with him because I know there’s no judgement there.

‘Paul was wavering the other day and getting anxious. He said: “Are we really going to do this?”

‘We talked it through – as a team – and decided we had as good a chance as anyone.

‘By the end of the conversation, we were like: “We’ve got this”.’

The pair decided to meet for the first time at Gatwick airport on Christmas Eve, and Paul surprised Sarah with a bunch of flowers.

Sarah said: ‘I’d only just met him at the airport and he brought flowers and got down on one knee.

‘He bought the perfect ring, it’s got six diamonds on it. He’s not a rich man but he knows how to treat someone.

‘He bought me a watch too, I don’t know how he knew I needed one.

‘The flight was about 11 hours. It was hard, I was freaking out. I didn’t have cold feet bus I was scared.

‘I’d just met this guy in person for the first time but we already had a connection.

‘We talked about this before we met, it’s not about what someone looks like it’s what they’re like on the inside.

‘He’s amazingly kind, he’s incredible. He really is.

‘He can get on with anyone and I can get on with anyone, it’s amazing. The whole thing is amazing.

‘We got married at the Bellagio, My dress was incredible. It was huge, I’ve been walking up and down the strip in it.

‘The wedding was amazing, the minister was great – we wanted to write our own vows but we didn’t have time.

‘The minister was Roland August, the Mobile Minister – he’s starred in a Katy Perry video.

‘He wrote our vows for us, and even though he’d never met us they were very personal and sweet.

‘I’m sure the wedding night will be amazing too.

‘You can have sexual attraction, but at the end of the day they have to be a good person.

‘You think you know people, but it doesn’t matter how long you’ve been with someone for, they can surprise you and not in a good way.

‘I’d been with my ex for three years and he turned out to not be capable of treating me right. You just don’t know.

‘So this time I thought: “Why not take a chance and have a bit of faith?”‘

Paul added: ‘It’s absolutely mental.

‘If you’d have asked me nine days ago whether I would meet someone, start talking to them and then go running off to Vegas to get married without meeting face-to-face I’d say you were crazy.

‘I don’t know what happened, it’s so weird as both of radius’ on Bumble weren’t even that close so I have no idea how we came across each other in the first place.

‘Sarah just seemed really lovely, when she first phoned me we spoke for over three hours.’

Mums share breast milk to help feed each other’s children

A group of mothers are sharing an unbreakable bond by donating their breast milk to feed each other’s babies in their hours of need.

A 30-year-old mum Kelly Brennan gave nine litres of breast milk to her friend Susie Schmitt, 32, and later they both turned to Kelly’s college classmate Brittany Wigman, 33, for help.

Brittany – an ‘over producer’ – had more than enough milk to feed her own baby, so gave Kelly and Susie 30 litres from her stash.

Despite Brittany and Susie not knowing each other at first, the women – who have nicknamed themselves the ‘milk mommas’ – say they now share a very special bond.

Kelly, a former TV reporter from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, said: ‘It came full circle. I donated my milk to somebody and then somebody else donated it to me

‘It is emotionally overwhelming when you see another baby thriving because of the milk you were able to give. The benefits are lifelong.

‘Susie, Brittany and I are bonded for life through this – we have helped raise each other’s babies.

‘Brittany is now affectionately know as my baby’s ‘milk momma’.’

The donation chain began in February when Kelly’s daughter Caroline, now 11 months old, suffered a reaction to her breast milk and moved onto formula.

When Kelly was at her local Target stocking up on the $40 (£32) formula, she bumped into an old friend from elementary school, Susie, perusing the same aisle.

Susie, 32, had recently given birth to her first child Allison eight months ago, but could not produce much milk despite taking vitamins and supplements.

Kelly, who had been storing and pumping her milk in case Caroline recovered, offered her nine litres of milk from her own stash.

Speech therapist Susie, who lives with husband Mike, 31, an electrical engineer, said: ‘We had been to the doctor so many times.

‘My body was just not producing milk. Some women don’t.

‘Allison was losing weight because I couldn’t breastfeed. Kelly said, ‘Oh my gosh, do you want my milk?’

‘After I thought about it, I said: ‘Heck, why not?’ My daughter liked it and she drank it.’

By June, Kelly’s newborn daughter Caroline was able to return to breast milk, but her own supply had dried up.

She said: ‘I wanted to introduce breast milk again but my milk had dried up. I was trying to re-lactate and I shared about my struggle on Instagram.’

The mum, who also has a daughter Lily, three, received a message from Brittany, with whom she went to Ohio University.

Brittany was producing more than enough milk to feed her own babies, so donated 30 litres of breast milk to feed both Kelly and Susie’s newborns.

Kelly said: ‘I cried when Brittany offered me her breast milk.

‘I was just so happy that somebody was willing to do that and another mum saw the importance of it.’

Kelly loaded up her car with coolers and drove two hours to Cleveland, Ohio, to collect sales manager Brittany’s milk.

She said: ‘There was so much milk that I couldn’t fit it all in my freezer so I gave the rest to Susie.’

As well as donating to Kelly and Susie, Brittany, a mum-of-two who married to teacher Jason, 33, has given milk to five complete strangers to feed their babies.

She said: ‘I happen to be an over producer of milk. I pump five times a day and I will produce a little over two litres of milk throughout the day.

‘I first donated in 2014 and the following year I donated again when I had my son. The first five people I donated to were complete strangers.

‘Knowing the health benefits of breast milk and what a rich nutritional resource it is, I couldn’t rationalise just dumping it.

‘Plus it really bummed me out that mums are being charged for something that I make naturally.

‘I’m bonded with these two women for life – we’ve helped each other raise our babies. It’s a beautiful thing.’

Dog opens Christmas present to find his very own puppy inside

An adorable video shows the moment a golden retriever received a new friend for Christmas.

One-year-old Minnie opened a box to find 8-week-old Parker, a present from her humans as an early Christmas gift on 19 December.

Minnie gets very anxious and frightened easily, so her owner, Nicolette Hall, 23, thought a fellow pup would be just the confidence boost she needed.

Nicolette said: ‘She has really bad fears and anxiety so we figured getting a new friend will help her come out of her shell.’

The dog groomer, from Texas, was over the moon to see her two dogs getting on perfectly from the minute they met.

She added: ‘It was kind of like love at first sight – Minnie has always loved other dogs and having friends now she has someone to grow up with and to help her be brave!’

Millionaire funds over 3,000 weddings of fatherless women who have no one to help pay

Millionaire funds 261 weddings of fatherless brides in India TOPSHOT - In this photo taken on December 23, 2018 Indian brides pose for a photo with Indian businessman Maheshbhai Savani (C) during a mass wedding in Surat, some 270km from Ahmedabad. - 261 women without fathers were married to partners in a mass wedding organized by the charitable PP Savani

In Indian culture, a bride’s father is expected to pay for his daughter’s wedding. If he is no longer alive then the responsibility falls on the brothers.

But some orphaned women or those without siblings have no one to fund their weddings. That can mean they remain unmarried as they cannot afford to tie the knot.

To change the fate of such women, a diamond trader, Mahesh Savani, has decided to pay for mass weddings as he believes giving away brides is a ‘blessing from God’.

So far, Mahesh has married off 3,172 brides and in his latest mass wedding service, he funded 261 ceremonies.

Performing the Kanyadaan – a Hindu ritual where the bride’s father presents his daughter to the groom, entrusting him with her future wellbeing, Mahesh has enjoyed giving away hundreds of fatherless women.

But the hopeful brides don’t have to be Hindu themselves as Mahesh blesses anyone with the Kanyadaan regardless of their religious background.

In the latest ceremony, six of the couples were Muslim while three of them were Christian. Of the 261 brides, 118 had no brothers or sisters and 54 were orphans.

Mahesh did get some help though, as Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani and several Indian Administrative Service and police officers helped to organise the event and regulate it.

Not only were the benefactors awarded a wedding, Mahesh and the organisers also gifted them household items to start their new lives and insurance worth 200,000 rupees (£2,300) each.

In the past, Mahesh has given gifts worth 500,000 rupees (£5,600).

The whole idea of performing a mass wedding service came to him in 2008 when a distant relative of Mahesh died which meant Mahesh had to take care of the daughter left behind.

After he helped her out, he felt it was a social responsibility to help other women in the same situation.

It’s not known how much Mahesh spends on these services but he sees no signs of stopping any time soon.

Trans model and activist Munroe Bergdorf creates her own ‘qween’s speech’ about LGBT rights

Did you catch the Queen’s speech?

No, not Queen Elizabeth’s Christmas speech, we’re talking about another qween – Munroe Bergdorf.

The transgender model and activist has created her own little speech, spinning a slightly different angle to the traditional one we’re used to hearing.

Much like the message of uniformity and peace that the queen shared, former L’Oreal model Munroe has been spreading the message of LGBTQIA rights.

In a short video, the activist who has famously spoken about white privilege and diversity, addressed challenges affecting Britain’s LGBTQIA community, issues that aren’t usually addressed in the speech we’re used to seeing on Christmas Day.

(Picture Munroe Bergdorf)

In the clip, Munroe addresses issues such as how our education system can better cater for queer students, address racism, sexism, and transphobia in our society.

‘We don’t just need to educate, we need to legislate, legislate against the eradication of our queer spaces both physical and virtual, especially the female and trans ones. We need to legislate for the rights, safety, and protection of all consenting sex workers,’ she says.

She also considers how we can tackle the lack of Pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP (when people at very high risk for HIV take HIV medicines daily to lower their chances of getting infected) for potential HIV sufferers.

Munroe looks further afield too, to the 74 countries where anti-homosexuality laws pose a threat to queer citizens.

In the past, she has advocated for a fairer world and empowered individuals to fight for positive change. Earlier this year Munroe fronted her own documentary What Makes a Women on mainstream television.

(Picture Munroe Bergdorf)

Munroe has previously used her platform, including social media, to talk about injustices faced by marginalised groups and shed light on the plight of trans people and sex workers.

Earlier in the year she posted a photograph of herself as an 11-year-old boy in retaliation against trolls who called her ‘ugly’.

Rather than letting the trolls get to her, she shared the same photo with her 42,000 followers, saying: ‘Since this high school photo of me at 11 years old has been doing the rounds on social media over the past couple of days. Let me post it myself to remind those who think it’s ok to call any child ugly – that it isn’t – even if they are now an adult.’

Twitter user Alli McDonald recently shared a photo of her Christmas tree with her cat hiding within it – and it’s turned into a Christmas brainteaser.

Alli took to Twitter to share the photo, captioning it: ‘Alright guys let’s play a game: every morning we find my cat in a different place in our Christmas tree and take a picture. Screenshot when you find him.’

Since being posted, the tweet has been liked nearly 3,000 times and it’s confused lots of people.

Here’s the original picture, apparently, her cat is hiding in the tree somewhere:

My Label and Me: I didn’t talk about my mental health in case people called me a psycho

0
0

I’ve lived with psychosis for 14 years.

I have auditory hallucinations, so I hear voices and sounds that aren’t really there. Sometimes I experience delusions where I end up believing wild and outlandish things about myself.

Every so often I hear shrill voices desperately screaming, interspersed with aggressive, guttural shouts, both of which pierce my ears with their intensity.

Most of the time I can’t make out what they’re saying, but occasionally I recognise a word or phrase.

These voices tell me I’m pathetic and disgusting; a loser who’ll end up alone. It’s a bewildering and confusing experience that I’ve slowly learnt to manage and more importantly, accept.

I didn’t deal with my diagnosis for a long time. I hid it from everyone. I didn’t tell anyone I heard voices until I was 28. I was afraid I’d be labelled negatively by the people I loved.

It wasn’t until I read the symptoms on Mind’s website that it dawned on me: this was me. It was laid out in black and white on the screen.

The words cut through me and I felt like I couldn’t breathe. My mind began to whirl with labels: crazy, insane, psycho.

It was actually a friend and work colleague who first gave me the label that I had been dreading. I confided in them and their first response left me shaken.

‘Wow, ok, so you’re a bit of a psycho then, aren’t you!’

A colleague’s ill-chosen words had a big impact on Katie. (Picture: Ben Gurr/Metro.co.uk)

I was dumbfounded that someone I thought would sympathise could use that word to describe me.

Whether they were joking or not, I don’t know. I didn’t bring it up again. I felt floored by this reaction. I felt angry, let down and deeply upset.

If someone who knew me so well could react like that, what would a person who didn’t know me think? Maybe they’d be afraid of me, or think I should be ‘chucked in a looney bin’.

Hearing her say it just confirmed what I already feared – that I was a ‘psycho.’

I have never wanted to harm another person because of the voices I hear – in fact, I’m more of a danger to myself than anyone else.’  (Picture: Ben Gurr/Metro.co.uk)

Being confronted with this label from a friend, and also from myself, only goes to show how easily our society uses this label in an unthinking way.

For me at least, the images that come to mind when that word is said are of insane asylums, straight jackets and crazed, dangerous individuals that are a threat to the general public.

I mean, Hitchcock’s Psycho is one of the most revered thrillers of all time.

But this isn’t the truth of what psychosis is actually like.

I have never wanted to harm another person because of the voices I hear – in fact, I’m more of a danger to myself than anyone else. All I’ve ever wanted is understanding, a calm listening ear and gentle conversation until the voices stop.

I feel there’s a barrier between those that have psychosis and those that don’t.’  (Picture: Ben Gurr/Metro.co.uk)

Unfortunately that doesn’t make for good TV.

I don’t want to be defined by this label. Calling someone psycho is derogatory and harmful to those that are some of the most vulnerable individuals in society.

Let’s just get rid of this word. The reality of psychosis and what the psycho labels implies are very different. By continuing to use this label you are misrepresenting us and adding to the stigma surrounding mental health.

I feel there’s a barrier between those that have psychosis and those that don’t. Conversations don’t begin because both sides are afraid for very different reasons.

Yes, it’s a difficult subject and it can be heard to understand as it’s so alien to someone who hasn’t experienced it, but it must be talked about and addressed.

If people understood how difficult life can be for those they label as psycho, how vulnerable they are, I think there’d be more of a willingness to understand.

Lean On Me: My friend’s boyfriend hit on me (and my mum). Do I tell her?

***ILLUSTRATION REQUEST*** How to date after being with a gaslighter
‘When his girlfriend’s back was turned, he ran his hand down my back’ (Picture: Ella Byworth for Metro.co.uk)

Hi Kate,

Earlier this year I made a new friend. I met her and her boyfriend at a festival I was at with my mum (she’s not like a regular mum, she’s a cool mum). Anyways, we drank and chatted, generally having a great time and promised to stay in touch.

When it came time to go, we said our goodbyes and parted ways. I couldn’t hear properly as the music was so loud, but when I said bye to her boyfriend I’m pretty sure he hit on me, saying I should come back to his house some time – either way I promptly left. I told my mum about this after we’d left and apparently he’d hit on her too, saying something along the same lines.

I decided to not mention it to my new friend as, to be honest, neither my mum and I could remember what he’d said in full and I wasn’t sure that we’d ever see them again.

But we did. The girlfriend and I went out on a couple of occasions and had a really lovely time, which is why I invited her to my birthday. Unfortunately, she brought her boyfriend along.

I gave him the benefit of the doubt and engaged in very surface-level conversations with him when there was no one else around to chat to, but clearly he took me talking about accounting to be a massive flirting technique, and when his girlfriend’s back was turned decided to run his hand down my back.

I really want to stay friends with her, but we barely know each other and I don’t know how to tell her that her boyfriend of three years is an utter creep. Can I get some advice please?

Jen, 24

women with arms around one another
‘You like this woman. You’d quite like to keep her as a friend. In which case, do as a friend should: find the courage to have an uncomfortable conversation’ (Picture: Ella Byworth for Metro.co.uk)

Dear Jen,

A tale as old as time: Man jeopardises perfectly lovely lady friendship with unforgivable creepiness. Hitting on your mama, relying on loud music to confuse you, waiting till the last minute to pounce and even the predatory stroking of your back… These are all the trademark moves of a classic creep. I’d say he’s done it before and he will likely do it again.

Cracking onto your girlfriend’s new friends while she’s metres away is a crime of extreme arrogance. This man believes he is invincible. The thrill for him is not the possibility that you or your cool mum might deign to sleep with him. The thrill is in being this brazen and getting away with it. He has wronged two generations of good women here and severely betrayed another – he mustn’t be allowed to get away with it.

This is where you come in. I suspect you already know precisely what you have to do here: you’ve got to tell your new friend. I know you don’t know her very well but to be honest that plays in your favour. It lowers the stakes for you. If she were your lifelong best friend, you’d risk losing a seriously significant friendship or hurting someone who means a lot to you.

As it is, if this girl doesn’t react splendidly to the revelation that her boyfriend is running his hand down other women’s backs, then you will have lost a fairly shallow friendship. It’ll be unpleasant, but not a tragedy. And when she finally overhears him hitting on someone else’s mother at a festival, she’ll already have your story as a precedent, leave his sorry ass and get in touch to thank you for trying to warn her.

You like this woman. You’d quite like to keep her as a friend. In which case, do as a friend should: find the courage to have an uncomfortable conversation. Invite her out for a drink, sit her down and tell her what happened. Tell her about the loud music, tell her about your mama, tell her about the sleezy line, tell her about the back stroking.

You know what happened here, so do not waste time doubting yourself or wondering if it was really that bad. When men harass women like this, they hope they will not have the strength or the clarity to speak up about it. He’s hoping you will doubt yourself enough to stay quiet. Don’t.

Now, your mate has been with this man for three years. You’ve known her five minutes. She will not be thrilled to hear what you have to say and her immediate instinct may be to stay loyal to the version of him she believes she knows and loves. She may challenge you, she may criticise you, she may not even believe you. Brace yourself for that, and be prepared to politely extricate yourself from the situation. You will have done the right thing by this woman, whether she knows it at the time or not.

Your friend deserves to know that she’s dating a mega creep. The alternative is to allow her to keep a man in her life who doesn’t belong there, a man who will likely hurt her in the future. She needs to know what this man is really like – and at the moment, you’re the one with the intel.

If your boyfriend was hitting on other women, wouldn’t you want to know?

Be brave, Jen. Good luck.

Elderly stranger melts hearts online after giving a baby £40 Christmas gift

A mum has melted hearts online after revealing how an elderly stranger returned to give her baby a Christmas present, six months after knocking on her door to ask for directions.

Robyn Gordon answered the door during the summer to find an old man trying to find the address of a friend in her street.

The man, known only as Ray, aged about 70, and believed to be a former teacher, asked to see Robyn’s baby before going on his way.

Robyn, from Pemberton, Greater Manchester, thought nothing more about it until Thursday last week when Ray returned to put an envelope through her door.

Robyn was reduced to tears after finding inside £40 cash and a hand-written note telling her to get something for her son, LJ, 11 months.

(Picture: Robyn Gordon)
(Picture: Robyn Gordon)

She posted on Facebook: ‘About 5/6 months ago a lil old man was looking for a house number so I helped him and showed him where it was.

‘He wanted to look at the baby so I showed LJ to him, he absolutely loved him.

‘He’s just knocked on my door to see how he was doing! What an absolute gentleman!

‘He took his hat off when I answered the door and said I’m just wondering how the little man is doing you might not remember me but I’ve been thinking about him.

‘This fella is called Ray, roughly around 70 years old and he’s an absolute gem!

‘I’m sat crying of how thoughtful, he gave me a kiss on the cheek and said I hope you are keeping well and have a Merry Christmas.’

Ray returned a little while later, put his envelope through the door, and walked away.

Robyn posted an image of the note, which read: ‘Hi. Here’s a little present to the little lad. Open a bank account if you wish or buy him a little something.

‘Christmas is a time for giving. I hope your mum is well.

‘Ray. (Brenda’s friend).’

How adorable is that?

Robyn says she was in shock when she received the envelope and broke down into tears, adding that she’s been going through a hard time and this really showed her how thoughtful people can be.

Since Robyn shared what had happened online, lots of people have been commenting to say how much Ray’s gesture had moved them.

One said: ‘There are some wonderful people out there old school who join in others lives for the better. So happy for LJ.’

Another said: ‘Aw how lovely. It’s nice to be nice.’

Kids and vegetables don’t generally mix.

Persuading your children to eat enough greens can be a constant and demoralising battle.

Once they wise up to the parsnips-in-the-mash-potato trick, you’re basically screwed.

But one mum is using her artistic talents to devise inventive ways to make healthy food seem much more appealing for her little ones.

The 35-year-old mum-of-two uses colourful fruit and veg to create incredibly realistic cartoon characters for her kids’ meals. And the results are just stunning.

Laleh says her son Jacob is a big fan of her work.

‘He just loves it,’ Laleh explains.

‘Seeing his expression when he sees the creation is what makes it worth it.’

For those of us who barely made it through GCSE art, the thought of replicating these creations seems daunting, but Laleh is adamant that they’re not too complicated.

‘It doesn’t take long – it is all in the preparation – for example I make all the cold elements like the features and clothing, whilst the hot elements like mash potato and pasta sauce are cooking. Then it is just a quick plate up.

‘We like to buy fresh produce so our fridge is quite colourful so it doesn’t cost us anymore than a normal meal.’

So if your kid straight up refuses to eat anything that’s even remotely green, then your best option might be to brush up on your artistic skills.
