Plastic’s not fantastic (Picture: Getty)

Today marks the start of Zero Waste Week, an annual awareness campaign for reducing landfill and waste in the oceans.

The amount of waste we produce in the UK could fill Lake Windermere in only eight months.

5 reasons why everyone needs to start talking about death

A lot of this is plastics which are largely unrecyclable and WRAP estimates the UK wastes 10 million tonnes of food every year.

The zero-waste movement came to the mainstream when campaigner Bea Johnson announced that she and her family manage to produce just one jar full of waste a year.

Yes, one jar.

Before you get married, people ask you the same two questions on rotation.

metro illustrationsLet's take a moment to appreciate the partners of people with mental health issues

‘Are you stressed?’ and ‘Are you excited? – to which the answers are yes and not really at this point I’m just tired and worried about table plans.

After you get married, it switches to one question, namely ‘Does it feel different now you’re married?’

In my case, I’d say yes. It does feel different. I’m not exactly sure why or how, but it feels more settled, calmer and more permanent. It’s a hard thing to explain or to quantify.

But according to new research, science actually suggests this hard to explain feeling is real. Being married does actually seem to change your relationship, making you more forgiving of your partner and giving you better self control.

Attention to detail when it comes to presentation is becoming more and more popular in food these days.

Marriage makes you more forgiving and gives you better self control, apparently

Probably thanks to Instagram and our obsession with snapping pics of our meals.

But whatever the reason, we’re not complaining if our food looks pretty.

And if the food is good for us? Well, that’s even better.

Take these ice cream bowls for instance – they look like an indulgent treat, but they’re actually super healthy, and ‘plant-based’ (although they contain honey, which we’re… Read the full story

The brilliant Nickelodeon shows. The furbies and the Polly Pockets. The frosted tips (okay, that’s a lie), and of course, the one, the only: Spice Girls.

While we’ve re-lived some of the above nostalgia with a series of tattoos and toy recreations, we’re yet to re-live the 90s itself – that was until we heard about a 90s-themed brunch that’s happening in just two weeks, and is inspired completely by the Spice Girls.

Three quarters of parents potty train by teaching their child to sit down on the loo, a recent study found.

There’s a whole lot of reasons why this makes more sense.

Is masculinity really so fragile that we need kids to pee in frog mouths?

Firstly, teaching a toddler that sitting down happens for pooing and standing up happens for weeing is confusing.

Secondly, trying to teach a toddler to aim at a small target is pretty confusing. You end up with pee all over your bathroom floor which is unpleasant and avoidable.

Thirdly, if he wants to pee standing up then he’ll eventually work it… Read the full story

During my late teens, I was addicted to Tumblr.

It sounds a little pathetic, I know – and I hate to use the word ‘addicted’, as though I found it almost impossible to separate myself from virtual life – but it admittedly almost was.

Someone used Greg Rutherford's autobiography to propose to his girlfriend

I first signed up to Tumblr, an online blogging platform, in 2011, after I was left housebound due to bad health. I was feeling low in myself, both physically and mentally, and I needed a distraction.

I decided to join the site, which at the time… Read the full story
