Hot chilli peppers could help people stop overeating, scientists have discovered.
Chillies contain an active component called capsaicin, which gives them their heat.
It has already been shown in studies that capsaicin is linked to reduced food consumption.

Now the scientists have a better understanding of why.
In a study published in PLOS ONE, researchers revealed that the receptors that respond to heat from chillies (known as TRPV1) are linked to gastric nerves.
The gastric nerves tell people how full they are and when to stop eating.
