World Ostomy Day is celebrated every year to raise awareness and understanding of life with an ostomy and to stop poo being taboo.

What is an ostomy?

An ostomy is the term for a medically created opening to the body, there are a few different types.

Colostomy – A colostomy is a surgical procedure to divert one end of the large intestine (colon) through an opening in the abdominal wall (tummy).

Ileostomy – An ileostomy is where the small intestine (small bowel) is diverted through an opening in the abdomen (tummy).

Urustomy – A urustomy a surgical procedure which diverts urine away from a diseased or defective bladder.

Stoma – a stoma is the opening which connects a portion of the body cavity to the outside environment.
