Socks used to be a terrible Christmas present.
They were, along with the knitted jumper and a deodorant set, the Holy Trinity of disappointing gifts. A useful but dull after thought.
But times have changed.The humble sock in differing shades of boredom is giving way to bright-coloured pairs, Argyle patterns, Fairisle knits, polka dots and stripes.
