Now 78, he discovered his life-saving abilities after a major operation to remove a lung at the age of 14, in 1951. During the operation, he received 13 litres of blood donated by strangers.
It inspired him to become a blood donor himself. Shortly after his first donation at the age of 18, he got a call from doctors that would change his life – and those of many, many others.
