If you’re considering a family staycation in 2025, there’s one place you might want to think twice before booking, according to a new holiday index.
Research by Go.Compare has named Newport in Wales as the ‘worst’ staycation spot in the country, with it garnering a score of just 1.4 out of 10.
The index ranked 55 destinations across the UK, with a focus on three key factors – family-friendly accommodation, attractions, and affordability during school breaks. The results highlight areas where families may face challenges when planning an enjoyable and cost-effective getaway.
Newport was identified as the lowest-ranking location with just 72 family-friendly hotels and 20 attractions tailored for children.
Wales as a whole didn’t fare particularly well in the index, with Cardiff and Swansea also placing in the bottom five. This is partly due to families facing an average price hike in accommodation of 47% if they stay in Wales during school holidays compared to term time – the highest price hike in the UK.

It might not come as a surprise to some that Newport wasn’t higher up on the list, as many people aren’t particularly kind about the city online – including those who live there.
On Reddit, a user known as u/Valkairn claimed the city centre has ‘little to recommend it, except for its small, recently renovated market’. They also said it had a ‘poor reputation for safety’.
This sentiment was echoed by u/Spiritual_Pound_6848 who wrote: ‘I live in Newport and would probably say you’d be better off going to explore Cardiff in your time here.’
And u/DhinobiD-28 thought the high street was a ‘real bin’, but did admit that the place as a whole isn’t ‘really as bad as people say it is’.
Others felt similarly, describing the city as ‘patchy’, saying there were some ‘rough areas’ and some nicer parts, and it was just a matter of doing your research before visiting.
The 'best' and 'worst' places for a UK staycation, according to Go.Compare:
The lowest-ranking family staycation spots
- Newport
- Cardiff
- Swansea
- Aberdeen
- Glasgow
The top-ranking family staycation spots
- Kent
- Norfolk
- Suffolk
- East Sussex
- North Yorkshire
However, others defended the city, with u/shaun-m1991 pointing: ‘There are some lovely parts of Newport.’ As technodeity said: ‘The area is actually really beautiful and within just a few minutes you can be in beautiful countryside.’
And Go.Compare’s very own travel expert, Rhys Jones, was shocked to see his home city branded the ‘wost’ of the bunch, as he didn’t agree with the verdict.
He said: ‘It’s surprising to see destinations like Newport rank so low on the list for family-friendly staycations. As a Newport resident, I can boast about its many charms, like the Celtic Manor (home to the 2010 Ryder Cup golf course) and plenty of neighbouring countryside. But a combination of fewer attractions for kids and price hikes during school holidays make it less accessible for families on a budget.’
He added: ‘Even so, these findings are a useful reminder that planning a family getaway requires careful consideration.’

At the other end of the index, it was the county of Kent that came top of the list with a score of 9.6 out of 10. This was thanks to more than 600 family-friendly accommodation options and 485 attractions suitable for all ages.
Norfolk came in second place, with a score of 9.1 out of 10 ranking highly for its coast and many family-friendly hotels, while neighbouring suffolk was in third place and was named as an ideal pick for those in search of quieter, countryside stays.
Rounding out the top five were East Sussex, with a score of 8.6 and North Yorkshire which garnered 8.5.
A closer look at Newport
While this research might not have favoured Newport, the city does still have a lot to offer visitors.
Those who have already planned a trip there, or are considering it will have a number of options to choose from for things to do and see.
One of the best things about Newport is that it’s incredibly walkable, and you can get from one end of the city centre to the other in just over 10 minutes. Along the way, you’ll come across all sorts of public art and statues that might pique your interest.
On Tripadvisor, top local attractions include Tredegar House, a National Trust property which won a Travellers’ Choice Award in 2024. The building has been hailed as one of the ‘architectural wonders of Wales’ and is said to be one of the most significant 17th century houses in the country. Those who have been claimed it makes for a ‘lovely day out for the whole family’.
The Caerleon Roman Fortress and Baths also is a top rated spot, which boasts a Travellers’ Choice Award too. Reviews say it’s ‘fab’, ‘amazing’ and ‘exceeds expectations’. As a bonus, it only costs £5.30 to get in.
Other highlights include the RSPB Newport Wetlands Reserve, which is a ‘tranquil’ spot if you’re looking to get out into nature and see some wildlife, and for those keen to do a bit of shopping there’s the Newport Market in the heart of the city, which offers a unique mixture of independent stalls, food and drink, and lifestyle businesses.
The city also has several lovely scenic parks, as well as nearby forests and woodland areas for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle.
