The summer holidays are here again and students across Britain are busy donning backpacks, throwing parties and generally getting as far away from textbooks as they can.
But spare a thought for the thousands of NHS trainees working their socks off all summer long.
Here are a few things about being a student midwife that most of us would never imagine.
1. Urine is the most exciting bodily fluid
Testing samples is a student midwife’s bread and butter. I never thought I’d describe someone’s widdle as ‘perfect’ but sometimes that’s just how it is.
By the same token, you sometimes feel like a wine connoisseur: wee can be ‘straw-coloured’, ‘cloudy’ or ‘frothy’ – though rarely ‘floral on the nose’.
