How’s your Valentine’s trivia? (Picture: Getty)

Today is quite possibly the most romantic day of the year, but just how much of an expert are you on all things Valentines?

Every February it slowly creeps up, the one day of the year where everything is pretty much covered in hearts, shades of red and pink and you begrudgingly give in and spend a ridiculous amount of money on mediocre chocolate, just because it’s packed in a heart shaped box.

But do you know the true origins of Valentine’s day? Or when it became associated with romance?

Take our quiz, and find out just how much you know about this day.

Getting older doesn’t mean your sex life has to slow down… although we’d recommend taking things slowly and carefully when it comes to trying more acrobatic positions.

Just because you’re over the age of the people shown banging on TV doesn’t mean you suddenly turn off your sexual desire and live a solitary, pleasure-less existence.

Older people have sex too. And actually, they’d quite like to have more of it.

A study by Independent Age of 2,002 older British people found that 52% of over-65s feel they don’t have enough sex, and would like to have more.

The research also found that over-65s are less willing to mess… Read the full story

A visit to the Pyongyang restaurant is not just about the food but also the entertainment put on by the staff (Photo: Sophie Williams)

When we heard about the Pyongyang restaurant in Beijing run by the North Korean government, we weren’t too sure what to expect.

Before I knew it, I was stood at the door of the restaurant with a friend, debating whether to see what was behind the frosted glass doors.

We weren’t brave enough. Not today we thought.

But a week later, there I was walking through the frosted glass doors being greeted by a a woman in traditional Korean… Read the full story

Oh look, these penguins are celebrating Valentine’s Day better than we ever have.

Rather than exchanging cheap chocolate or pretending that the poem our boyfriend wrote is actually really good, really, penguins living at San Francisco’s California Academy of Sciences mark the occasion by collecting red felt hearts the biologists have made just for them.

Those felt hearts are then used as nesting material, either left as they are or torn to pieces. The penguins then snooze on said nesting material, in the ultimate rebellion against the commercialism of V Day.

Lost faith in love and romance? Don’t panic – we’ve got some news to make you believe again: On Valentine’s Day, people do actually stick to a theme and watch V-day porn.

    Sweet, huh?

Pornhub’s Insights team has revealed that on 14 February, searches for ‘valentine’, ‘cupid’, and ‘love’ all get a massive boost, indicating that Valentine’s Day really does make people feel all lovey-dovey… at least in terms of their wanking habits.

‘Massage’, ‘lingerie’, and ‘romance’ also receive an increase in searches on Valentine’s Day, possibly as a source of inspiration for IRL sex.

It’s not all rose petals and chocolate, mind you.

Valentine’s Day also increases people’s… Read the full story

Happy Valentine’s Day. Today is the one day that we profess our love to the person most dear to us. Right? No? Okay.

Alright, even though the sceptics will say that you don’t need a day to tell your closest one how much you love the, the day itself can be rather nice.

Penguins celebrate Valentine's Day by snoozing on felt hearts

Valentine’s Day is a holiday of heartfelt affection and nothing beats a lovely quote, message or poem in a card.

    Spike the beetle
Mr Lover Lover (Credit: Spike the Beetle)

    This is Spike.

    Spike’s a stag beetle.

He’s strong, intelligent and wants to sweep you off all six feet on a romantic getaway into some dung.

If you were Spike’s girlfriend, he’d have woken you up this morning with a fresh cup of coffee and some heart-shaped crumpets, before showering you with thoughtful gifts.

But you’re not Spike’s girlfriend. Sally is.

And Sally had Valentine’s plans of her own, because Sally is a strong, independent stag beetle.

Sally secretly booked a table at Spike’s favourite restaurant for this evening, and she’s already surprised him at work by crawling in naked with a rose in her pincers.

    Fuckboy valentine's cards Picture: Metro.co.uk
    (Picture: Metro.co.uk)

Would f***boys be as maddening if they were just bloody upfront about their feelings?

Would we still be infuriated if they said they’d dick us around from the get-go and we really, really should expect any better?

We can only dream. A f***boy is the king of mixed messages. He works based on the very premise that you’re not sure what he’s after, raising your expectations then smashing them to pieces through the art of zombieing and emotional distance.

In our dream world, Valentine’s Day would be free of the confusion and stress caused by not-officially-dating, because f***boys the world over would take the day as an… Read the full story

    Who is Danielle Herrington?

Expect to see her everywhere pretty soon.

Danielle appears on the cover of the 2018 edition of Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue, making her just the third black woman to ever appear on the magazine’s swimsuit themed cover – following in the footsteps of Beyoncé, who appeared on the cover in 2007, and Tyra Banks, who got the top spot in 1997.

If you didn’t know, appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue is a big deal for a model. It’s massively boosted the careers of models including Kate Upton and Chrissy Teigen.

For Danielle Herrington, it’s extra special, as one of the few black women to make the cover in… Read the full story

Lucky enough to be here this Valentine’s Day? (Picture: Getty)

‘Roses are red, violets are blue, Happy Valentine’s Day, and all I want is you’.

Yes, I just came up with that poem, which required a lot of brain power, but for those celebrating with a loved one, friends, or simply treating the day like any other, you will probably hear the words, ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’, at some point today.

Today is the day of love.

While you might’ve got gifts from your loved one, have plans for a romantic evening or even got a minimal effort text this morning, can you really compete with these ants?

The colony of leaf-cutter ants have received what’s believed to be the world’s smallest Valentine’s Day card. Lovely.

It might be small, but it is certainly mighty.

Unlike us mere humans who might keep the card for a day or two only to chuck it away later (unless you’re a hoarder who likes to hold on to anything that has the slightest sentimental value), this card is actually to help them… Read the full story

A mum who was diagnosed with terminal cancer has written a book to help her children understand her sudden diagnosis.

Sarah West, 34, from Loughborough, Leicestershire, was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2017, and was devastated when she was told by doctors two weeks later that it was terminal.

Sarah wanted to explain her illness to her two daughters, Amelia, 3, and Olivia, 6, using a book, but couldn’t find anything appropriate. So she decided to create her own book for them.

The book, ‘Mummy’s Got A Poorly‘, talks through the process of chemotherapy and hair loss and helps young children to understand… Read the full story

Valentines Day is the one day a year in which couples have the excuse to revel in each other’s love and celebrate their relationship.

Quiz: How much do you really know about Valentine’s Day?

However this annual recognition of love can bring a lot of pressure when it comes to buying the right gift, writing the perfect card and arranging the most romantic Valentine’s date possible – and quite often things can go wrong.

***ILLUSTRATION REQUEST*** Why friendship is so important when life gets difficult
Love is in the air (Picture: Ella Byworth for Metro.co.uk)

I’ve never really understood Valentine’s Day.

My parents are happily married but don’t celebrate it so I’ve never given it much thought.

Even when I saw the older girls at school proudly carrying around teddies and heart balloons, I remember thinking it was all a bit lame. Thanks mum and dad for making me an emotionless robot.

Of course it’s fine if you want to celebrate it – and some of you are kinda cute – but it breaks my rubbery, cold heart that today makes some single people feel… Read the full story

    We’ve all been there.

You’re entirely aware Valentine’s Day is coming up. You ponder over the correct way to celebrate. You make a mental note to figure out how into Valentine’s Day the person you’re dating is, then work based on that.

    But then you… don’t.

Call it decision paralysis, call it being too busy to worry about a commercial holiday, call it a terrible memory. Whatever the reason, you’ve realised Valentine’s Day has hit, you’ve done f*** all about it, and your other half is quite clearly expecting a gesture of great romance.

    Here’s your plan of action.

    1. Whatever you do, don’t pretend Valentine’s Day isn’t happening

Attention, ice cream lovers: Ben & Jerry’s has just launched a new flavour, and it sounds amazing.

Ben & Jerry’s has just started selling a new birthday cake flavour. It’s made up of vanilla cake batter ice cream, pink frosting, strawberry swirls and cake pieces.

The new ice cream comes in celebration of Ben & Jerry’s 40th birthday, which will be celebrated later this year.

Ben & Jerry’s flavour gurus couldn’t think of a batter way (sorry) to celebrate than by combining two of their (and everyone’s?) favourite things: ice cream and cake, in an all-in-one tub.
