Not only is getting into the great outdoors great for our youngster’s physical and mental health, it also encourages a respect for nature and, when the cost of everything is on the rise, it’s quality time that doesn’t have to cost a bean.

If you need some inspiration, here are 20 free ways kids can get back to nature…

That means a lot of awkward, stilted, conversations are happening in bars and restaurants across the world every single night.

And the restaurant and bar managers of the world aren’t loving it.

According to a report by the Washington Post, all those awkward first dates are seriously hitting restaurants’ bottom line.

She eventually lost her right leg, left foot, and both hands, and now works as a public speaker and an advocate for those with disabilities.

Meet Anna Owen. She’s just turned 18. We know that because her family helpfully took out a half page ad in The Chronicle to wish her many happy returns.

Because, as all parents know, there’s nothing teenagers love more than mum and dad making a public show of them.

Anna, from North Tyneside, was pretty nonplussed to receive a copy of her local paper along with her birthday presents on the morning of her birthday.

On spotting the half-page birthday ad, her first words were: ‘I can’t believe you put that in the paper’.

However, after reading the tongue-in-cheek birthday wishes, she… Read the full story

We’ve all done it (Picture: MEN)

We’ve all been there. You go out for a leisurely bike ride, you take a wrong turn, and you end up competing in a triathlon.

Okay, maybe not. But it did happen to Alison Carrick, 55, a primary school teacher from Haslingden, north of Manchester.

Alison hadn’t been on a bike for years, but decided to get back in the saddle for a relaxed Sunday bike ride on May 29.

But, the mum-of-three ended up turning into a little bit of traffic – specifically, 250 cyclists taking part in the annual Rossendale Triathlon. And, while most of us would quietly got off the competition route at the next side road, Alison… Read the full story

You never forget your first pet.

Well, unless you’re asked to name it as part of some dastardly online security authentication – then your mind’s a blank.

But before you grew up and had to authenticate things on the internet, your pet was your life.

You rushed home from school to feed it and play with it. You made cool obstacle courses for it in the back garden. You tried to take it on holiday. You cried when it died. And then you got a new one… Read the full story

If only exercise were addictive as chocolate or wine.

Well according to many converts, it is.

Running is about as versatile as you can get; you can go when and where you like, with who you like and for how long you like – all for very little expense, well until you start taking it more seriously.

Here are 19 signs you might recognise if you’ve caught the running bug:

1. Getting up at 6am to go running before work doesn’t seem like such a chore compared to getting up to actually go to work.

2. You continually check the weather, although really there’s no need, as you’ll still go running – even if it’s raining cats and dogs.

3. You’ll forgo a… Read the full story

If you want to keep your neighbours happy, you have to be willing to compromise.

For instance, if they’ve knocked on your wall more than three times and eventually actually have to bang on your front door in order for you to turn your TV down – it’s only right that you do so.

These two neighbours, however, seem to be more intent on pissing each other off than they do getting on.

After one got particularly angry person and left a note for their neighbour about the state of his lawn, the lawn-owner agreed to do something about it.

But what they did probably wasn’t what their frustrated neighbour wanted:

Technically, they are doing something about getting rid of the dandelions, but you have to wonder how well it went down with the neighbours.

Footage has emerged of the moment a Gentoo penguin staged a great escape during Edinburgh Zoo’s famous penguin parade.

The penguin parade has been one of the zoo’s most beloved attractions since it started in 1951. Visitors are invited to watch the group of penguins as they take their daily constitutional.

The penguins aren’t forced to take part in the parade – each one participates purely because they want to.

The daily march of the penguins usually goes off without a hitch. But, a couple of weeks ago, one of the penguins went on the run.… Read the full story
