There are not many questions for which you can almost guarantee the answer from every respondent, but I believe this to be one.

Ask a man; ‘would you like to go away with a load of women to a beautiful country to soak up the sun, see some sights, have a few beers and try something new?’

Women have to put up with a lot of sh*t.

Unfair pay, casual sexism, periods. The list could go on, and on.

Photo series explores the harassment women face on a daily basis

In the face of big issues like reproductive rights and menstrual hygiene around the world, it can feel silly to get pissy about the little things – the microaggressions, the fact that your boss calls you ‘darling’, people’s refusal to stop referring to us as ‘girls’ and start calling us women, or the endless slew of sexual comments slung our way when we do our daily commute.

These little things build up, take us down, and shape our experiences of womanhood. And yet so many people who don’t experience the little things don’t believe they happen, or fail to understand their impact.

That’s why it’s important to keep calling them out – because it’s the little, everyday acts of… Read the full story

It all began when I was about 11.

Having dark brown hair, I started to notice that my eyebrows were getting bushy, my arm hair was growing thick and fast, and… I had a little, fluffy moustache.

Now, I’m all for women doing what they want with their body hair (I’m pro-muff) but a moustache really isn’t on brand for me.

It isn’t now, and it wasn’t then, so 11-year-old me stole my dad’s razor and shaved it off.

Unsurprisingly, the little… Read the full story

Artist creates painting out of her own menstrual blood to start a conversation around period poverty

There’s still a lot of period stigma and shame floating about.

People are told to keep their periods quiet, hidden – stains out of sight and tampons hidden up sleeves.

Reinventing the date night with gin and jazz

Our discomfort around periods creates a barrier to tackling all the menstrual issues still going on in the world – a lack of access to menstrual hygiene products, the tampon tax, and minimal education around periods, to name a few.

There’s no way we can fix these problems if every time we bring up periods, we’re told to pipe down.

A pair of used trainers just sold at auction for £149,785

Most of us have accidentally spent a bit more than we intended to on a pair of new shoes before.

That said, most of us probably haven’t spent the price of a one bedroom flat (outside of London, obviously) on a pair of battered trainers.

To be fair, these aren’t just any trainers. These are the trainers worn by Micheal Jordan in the 1984 summer Olympics basketball game.

The shoes are heavily worn (as you can see from the photo) and Jordan has left his orthopaedic insert in there, which is nice of him. They’re also autographed.

Growing a beard didn’t make me a man. But it sure helped

Growing hair on my face has always been my destiny.

It’s in my blood, mostly due to having Greek roots, and I’ve been genetically tasked with shaving my top lip (*quite* badly, at first) since KS3 SATs in primary school, although that wasn’t in the curriculum.

You can now match your cat or dog with these realistic animal paw socks

But I’ve had to wait more than half of my life to grow into those bristles and, because my twenties have perfectly eclipsed with ~the~ age of peak beard, to actually look like I know what I’m doing with them.

After an entire puberty of wearing distinctly boutique designer stubble, I vowed to put the trimmer down after graduation to finally confront what I’d spent the past decade taming and fighting from revealing.

As a kid, I used to watch my dad shave in front of the mirror nearly every day. But he still used… Read the full story

What’s the difference between empathy and sympathy and why is it important?

Today is the first ever Empathy Day, which aims to use words and stories to build children’s empathy.

It’s common to mistake empathy with sympathy, so what’s the difference between the two?

Both words deal with the relationship someone has to the feelings and experiences of another.

The two terms have roots in the Greek term pathos, which means ‘suffering, feeling’.

Sympathy is a word that entered English in the mid 1500s, and had a broad meaning of ‘agreement or… Read the full story

Why poetry is the new rock and roll

Musicians used to be seen as the voice of the people – we were knee deep in protest songs and sweary attacks on authority.

But as programmes such as the X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent have slowly taken over from sweaty pubs as the route for young singers and bands to hit the limelight, so the message they carry has become milder in tone.

Perhaps it’s time to listen to poets again?

Many of us think of poetry as being dull and sleepy, all daffodils and clouds and boring GCSE homework.

But then we hear Tony Walsh reading This Is The Place in the aftermath of the… Read the full story
