Ah, the special Union Jack towel (Picture: Getty)

When it comes to going abroad, us Brits have a special ability to stick out amongst the crowds.

A Les Mills HIIT expert whether you should work out on an empty stomach

It could possibly be our slightly rowdy nature, our insistence on wearing clothing branded with a Union Jack in case in the foreign culture we forget where we are from, or our insistence on starting the day the right way with a full English breakfast.

Blending in with the locals isn’t really our cup of tea, and going abroad is an excellent chance to showcase our true British… Read the full story

Social media complaining – How much is too much?

The temptation to have a good moan on social media is always there; on a delayed train, after buying something faulty; having received bad service in a restaurant.

Some people think it’s the best way to get a response, as companies feel more obligated to act properly in a public space.

If someone stares at your feet or legs, they probably don't want to date you

But, if you’re a Twitter user, you may have seen the big fight that came about last week over Holly Brockwell’s towel. Yes, you read right – a towel.

There comes a point in every relationship where you want to share a picture of your SO on social media.

Perhaps it’s a cute picture of you both at dinner, on holiday or having a drink.

When your partner puts their ex's feelings above yours when it comes to social media

You look good, they look handsome – why not slap on a good filter and show the world that you do occasionally leave your hole?

But then your beau turns around and asks not to be tagged in it.

‘Why not?’ you ask, expecting them to complain about the angle of the selfie.

‘I’m sorry – I just don’t want to upset my ex who might see it’.

Now there’s obviously a timeline of reason here. If there was some ~overlapping~ going on, you may be further along the relationship road that the ex is down the getting-over-it highway.

ACT is different from a lot of therapies (Picture: Ella Byworth for Metro.co.uk)

Having been ill for many years, I’ve tried a number of different treatments, including DBT and CBT.

I also had hospital stays, and tried to take my life multiple times.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy: What is it? And what is it like to get DBT?

Genuinely helpful tips for dealing with anxiety I’ve learnt through CBT

Let me start by saying that any tips you read on the internet are not a replacement for therapy.

That’s not because they’re useless, or unhelpful. They can be incredibly helpful.

It’s just that any mental health related tips you read aren’t going to be tailored to you, they’re easier to ignore than someone who you have to chat to every week, and they don’t offer the same kind of support as an actual real-life person can in a one-to-one session.

Grossest 70s dinner party recipes

But waiting lists for therapy are long. Medication doesn’t fix everything.

I’m incredibly lucky that after months of waiting, I’m now midway through my prescribed CBT sessions.

The help I’ve received so far has been brilliant, and I’d really like to share it with other people – people who aren’t ready to ask for help yet, are waiting for therapy and need support in the meantime, or who are considering CBT and… Read the full story

As part of your treatment for depression and anxiety on the NHS, you’ll probably be asked a lot of probing questions.

It makes sense, as it’s the best way for them to work out how to help you. However, that doesn’t stop it from feeling invasive and strange, having to tell a complete stranger about your innermost thoughts.

Relationships are often blamed for piling on extra pounds.

You’re supposed to get all comfy and settled – swapping the club for the sofa and the gym for a takeaway with your other half.

If someone stares at your feet or legs, they probably don't want to date you

But that isn’t always the case (obviously).

Because researchers from Florida State University claim that what you eat is dependant on how attractive your partner is.

If you think your partner is hotter than you, they claim, the chances are that your diet will be a lot healthier.

My favourite book as a teenager was Being Jordan, by Katie Price.

A vegan blogger who tried to cure a persistent yeast infection by healthy eating found that doing so sent her spiralling into orthorexia.

Orthorexia, though without a clear clinical definition, manifests as a fixation or obsession with healthy eating to the point where it becomes unhealthy.

Henya Perez, 28, switched to a ‘Raw till 4’ diet after reading that it would cure candida (the type of yeast infection).

What? I was only in this for the ice cream. (Picture: Irene Palacio for Metro.co.uk)

One of the cruelest myths ever to be debunked was the concept of ‘eating for two’.

For a long time, women who were being deprived of all of life’s greatest joys (alcohol, soft cheese, a nice postprandial cigar) were at least able to find comfort in scarfing down an extra slice of pizza, ‘for the baby’.

And then some researcher came along and pointed out that a fetus probably doesn’t need the same number of calories as an adult person.

You’d imagine if you’d never set foot in a rowing boat before, apart from, say, an abortive attempt in a boating lake age 9, that you would set yourself a fairly tame goal for your first challenge when you did finally take up the sport.

Not so Kiko Matthews. The science teacher-turned-paddle board instructor and adventurer, this time last year a total beginner in a rowing boat, set herself the challenge of rowing solo across the Atlantic – before she’d actually picked up an oar.

‘There’s this moment where you feel this cold fear and you just think “no, I’m not going to do my life,” and that’s when things get more hazy.’

Imogen Groome talks about her experience of fugue state, also known as reversible amnesia, on this week’s episode of Metro.co.uk’s mental health podcast, Mentally Yours.

It’s quite a rare condition, triggered by stress, where someone will disassociate from themselves.

Imogen has gone into fugue state 11 times – the first aged 12 after being shouted at by a fearsome teacher.

She was sent out of class to hand her phone in, but her mind had other ideas.

‘I just couldn’t cope,’ she says. ‘What I do remember, now that I’ve had time to think about it, is that I did just walk out of the school.’

She ended up sitting in a field for six hours until she ‘kind of woke up’.

‘I think what brought me back was the sound of… Read the full story
