Dog butchered by drunken brute finally finds his forever home

Wacku lost his snout five years ago (Picture: Kelly Beal / SWNS.com)

Wacku the dog had his snout chopped off with a machete by a callous drunk back in 2012.

The seven-year-old was guarding his owner’s tricycle in a remote town in the Philippines when he was almost hacked to death.

The seriously injured dog was rescued by a Filipino animal welfare charity, and it was such an extreme case that it was the catalyst for a change in the country’s animal welfare law, with sentences and fines for abusers increased.

Thankfully, Wacku recovered, but spent five years in a rescue centre, waiting for someone to come and love him.

Just as it seemed like there… Read the full story

If you have IBS, no doubt you’ll have heard of the low FODMAP diet, since it’s one of the few diets often recommended by medical professionals to help with symptoms of the syndrome.

How I found my identity as a mixed race woman

Being mixed race means you don't fit in anywhere
I’m caught between British and Chinese culture (Picture: Phébe Lou Morson for Metro.co.uk)

As a child I desperately wanted to fit in.

Understanding the importance of equal rights: why my children join us on Pride marches

But I didn’t fit in any one group of people, for a number of reasons, but I think the underlying reason for feeling like an outsider stemmed from the fact that I am mixed race (or the fancy term is ‘dual heritage’).

I grew up in quite a ‘diverse’ or ‘multi-cultural’ neighbourhood but it always felt multi-segmented – and… Read the full story

There’s a dating app exclusively for people who went to private school

How many times have we told you that there’s a new dating app on the scene?

Lots. But bear with us. You’re probably going to have strong feelings on this one.

Because the USP of this dating app?  It’s only for people who went to private school.

It’s called Toffee, and the inventors claim that because people generally want to socialize with those who share their background, toffee just cuts the corners and allows you to avoid meeting people from different backgrounds.

Does that sound a little bit like eugenics? Yes. Will a lot of people who wear Ralph Lauren want to use it? Probably.

Does leaving a face mask on too long cause skin damage?

Is leaving a face mask on too long bad for your skin? Picture MMUFFIN/metro.co.uk
Set that timer, lads (Picture:  MMUFFIN/metro.co.uk)

Show me a person who takes their face mask off at the recommended time and I’ll show you a liar.

20 minutes? 15 minutes? 10 minutes?

I honestly can’t remember the last time I didn’t get distracted and leave mine on for an hour.

I didn’t really think there could be anything that wrong with doing so until last night when I had to chisel off my super-hardened neem face mask (even after standing under the shower for 10 minutes) and was left with a bright red, burnt-looking face.

However, it turns out that there… Read the full story

Finally some good dieting news – coffee might help you lose weight

FILE - In this Sept. 22, 2017, file photo, a barista pours steamed milk in a coffee at a cafe in Los Angeles. Superior Court Judge Elihu Berle has ruled that California law requires coffee companies to carry an ominous cancer warning label because of a chemical produced in the roasting process. Judge Berle wrote in a proposed ruling Wednesday, March 28, 2018, that Starbucks and other coffee companies failed to show that the threat from a chemical compound produced in the roasting process was insignificant. At the center of the dispute is acrylamide, a carcinogen found in many cooked foods, that is produced during the roasting process. (AP Photo/Richard Vogel, File)Read the full story

Buffer zones to stop abortion clinic protests are wanted, needed and overdue

Campaigners in support of buffer zones (Photo by Dan Kitwood/Getty Images)

Ealing Council has became the first council in Great Britain to vote on instituting a buffer zone outside a local abortion clinic, thus protecting women from harassment by pro-life campaigners.

woman pregnancy testThe fight for abortion rights is still not over…

The idea of a zone, technically known as a public space protection order (PSPO), was first mooted last year by Labour MP Rupa Huq and backed by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Ealing councilors gave it full support, hoping to bring an end to protests that have blighted the… Read the full story

‘Every choice I took was the wrong one’: 6 people open up about stress-related breakdowns

We’re almost halfway through Stress Awareness Month, an annual occasion where mental health experts promote discussion around how stress affects our health.

metro illustrationsHow does your social circle affect your mental health?

Personally, I rarely have a stress-free day.

But then again, my chosen profession is that of a freelancer, which often includes tight deadlines and a never-ending hunt for more work. Most days though, the love I have for my job negates any stress – I thrive off it.

Mum’s Facebook post nails how hard it is for parents to live in the moment

Being a mum is a magical thing.

It can also be a nightmare.

There are beautiful, wonderful moments and moments you wish you could fast forward through – times when you love your child exactly as they are, followed by times you wish they were older, they wouldn’t cry constantly, and they could tell you why they didn’t want to eat their food.

Then time passes, and you wish you could go back to when they were babies.

It’s hard to be in the moment, and take in all the lovely bits of the stage your child is at right now.

Cardi B is teaming up with Fashion Nova to bring out her own collection

(Picture: Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images for Marc Jacobs)

This is undeniably Cardi B’s moment.

Her album dropped this week. She announced her pregnancy on SNL. And then, almost as a casual afterthought, she revealed that she’s working on a collection with Fashion Nova.

The collaboration makes sense. Cardi B’s been rocking the Insta-famous brand Fashion Nova, also loved by Kylie Jenner, for years. Her Instagram is filled with photos of her wearing jumpsuits, jeans, dresses, and more from the brand – usually with captions calling Fashion Nova her favourite.

She even name drops them on She Bad: ‘I could buy designer, but this Fashion Nova fit all that ass.’

Wear your heart on your face with the heartbeat brows trend

(Picture: Instagram/shinybeautiz)

So you want to do something with your brows, but bow brows, garden brows, and dipped brows aren’t quite your thing.

May we suggest heartbeat brows, also known as EKG brows?

Created by Kuwait-based makeup artist Zakia Serroukh Wahbi, the concept of heartbeat brows is pretty simple: You make your brows look like a heartbeat rendered on an EKG machine.

Making the look happen isn’t so simple.

First you need to make your existing brows look, well, non-existent. This’ll be done with glue (which you use to create a flat surface) and heavy duty concealer.

Once that’s done, you’ll need to have a very steady hand to… Read the full story

Mum is left embarrassed when her son accidentally wears a very rude T-shirt to school

Shelly McCullar was left feeling more than a little embarrassed when her son returned from school wearing a suggestive T-shirt.

Her son, Anthony, was wearing what he’d innocently assumed was a T-shirt with the McDonald’s logo on it.

Spoiler: It was not just the McDonald’s logo.

What the T-shirt Anthony wore actually showed her a pair of legs, spread out to the side and wearing heels. The McDonald’s slogan was still there – ‘I’m lovin’ it’, but it definitely didn’t refer… Read the full story

‘I was on the train with this girl I’d been on a date with. We were snogging in the toilet, with my hand up her dress, when the door opened.

‘A middle-aged man in a suit was standing there reading the paper, and he looked at me in shock, like, “what the -?” then his expression changed to, “nice one mate!”

‘I think it was pretty obvious I hadn’t lost my keys up there. I was frantically pushing the buttons to close the door, and luckily it all happened so quickly that I don’t think she realised.’

No more palm oil in Iceland own brand food PA
Where my hash brown fries at? (Picture: PA)

Iceland has pledged to stop using palm oil in all its own brand food, by the end of 2018.

This means the oil will be taken out of 130 food lines, and replaced with alternatives such as butter and sunflower oil.

The move will reduce demand for palm oil by over 500 tonnes a year.

So what’s the problem with palm oil?

It’s a very cheap oil that’s found in all sorts of products – not just food – including biscuits, breakfast cereals, soaps, shampoo and toothpaste.

However, thanks to the Western world’s insatiable appetite for… Read the full story

Homelessness and mental health: what’s being done to help?

For people who are homeless and living with a mental health condition, support for the illness might not be the priority (Picture: Ella Byworth for Metro.co.uk)

The ‘Beast from the East’ put homelessness under the spotlight in February and March as rough sleepers faced freezing conditions.

But a more persistent problem among homeless people, which is little talked about, is the prevalence of mental health issues.

As someone with bipolar disorder, who has never been homeless, I wanted to investigate what support there is out there for homeless people with mental health conditions.

Anyone can be affected by homelessness, regardless of age, race or sex.

Among homeless people, 44% have been diagnosed with… Read the full story

Please enjoy this evidence of a tiny dog chasing the Google Street View car

(Picture: Google Street View)

We truly do not deserve dogs. They are too pure and good for this world, and give us more joy than we’ve earned.

A prime example of this fact: A very tiny dog who brightened up Google Maps by chasing the Street View car down the road.

People in Japan first spotted the excellent dog, who chased a Google Street View car down the road in Kumage, in Japan’s Kagoshima Prefecture.

The chase began when the dog, hanging out by a boat, spotted the car and bounded after it. It was probably being a very good guard dog, to be fair.

He managed to chase the car down the road,… Read the full story
