The world needs more knitters (Picture: Getty)

Take two needles and a ball or two of wool and before too long you could have whipped up something rather snazzy.

And if snazzyness wasn’t enough, here are a few more reasons why, if you haven’t already, you really should learn to knit…

1. You see a must have piece of knitwear but it’s out of your price range. No problem, you can make it yourself.

2. Haberdasheries are one of the best places in the world. You need more reasons to visit one as often as humanly possible.

3. So much yarn and so little time. The world needs more knitters to put it to good use.

4. After the… Read the full story

Freckles are SO pretty. But why do some people have them? (Picture: Getty)

Freckles: they’re so hot right now.

Whether we’re painting on freckles and pretending we’re born with it (we’re not), replicating the look with glitter, or gazing upon the beauty of Brock Elbank’s freckle-faced portraits, it’s clear that freckles are having a real moment.

And we’re pretty pleased about that, because freckles are gorgeous. Always. They’re more than just a trend.

But why are some people lucky enough to be blessed with freckles, while the rest of us have to draw them on? Is there a reason for freckles? Do they serve a purpose… Read the full story

Vodka is never to be trusted. (Picture: Getty)

Vodka. It’s your eternal enemy. It’s your loyal friend.

It was there for you when you were a teenager ready to move on from WKD to the big leagues, in Tesco value form.

It was there during freshers week when you were ready to make terrible decisions and bond with people you’d be forced to share a kitchen with for the next year.

And it’s still there for you. Sort of.

Sure, the smell of it is pure regret. Maybe you can’t handle straight vodka shots the way you used to. But when the time is right (ie. when you’ve just gone through a breakup or fancy making terrible decisions),… Read the full story

Ha ha, no disposables for me (Picture: Getty)

My baby has a cloth bum. Or to put it another way, we use washable nappies.

‘Real nappies’, as they are sometimes called (so does that make disposables imaginary?!) are increasing in popularity and if you are yet to convert, I’d highly recommend giving them a go.

Here are a few things you might recognise if your baby’s nappies are of the reusable kind.

1. When first looking into cloth nappies the sheer variety leaves you confused and running for the hills.

What the flip is a prefold? And what in God’s name am I supposed to do with a stuffable?!

2. Reviews, blogs, retailers – there’s no end of advice on which… Read the full story

Blundering through life is a strain when you’re socially awkward.

From standing around at gatherings in a cold sweat – hoping no one will make eye contact with you – to constantly inventing ways to circumnavigate the threat of being invited to participate, there’s just so much to worry about between the blushes.

1. You dread going to the hairdresser

Why do they not pick up on the clue when you bury your head in last year’s magazines?

You’d rather go to the dentist than be trapped in a hostage hairdressing situation where an hour of idle chat is unavoidable.

It certainly livened up the morning commute.

One mother was left distraught after a stranger commented on her two-year-old son, who has stoma bags.

A stoma is a surgically created opening in the front of the abdomen, which diverts waste into an bag which sticks to the stomach.

Her son, Jameus, has two stomas, which lead from his colon, as it didn’t finish forming before he was born. He was also born with a disease called Hirschsprung’s disease – a condition that causes faeces to become stuck in the bowels.

Normally, her Jameus’ stoma bags are kept in place using a onesie worn under his clothes – to keep them safe and secure, and to stop him pulling on them. But, before a rushed trip to her local supermarket, she didn’t have time to dress him in his normal wear, and so his bags were covered simply by his t-shirt.

Lorraine Henderson, a 40-year-old mum-of-one from Livingston, Scotland, used sunbeds from the age of 13 and refused to wear suntan lotion. Instead, she would apply baby oil on holiday to boost her tan.

It wasn’t until she developed a spot on her face, which wouldn’t clear up, that she discovered the damage she was doing. After ignoring it for a year, she went to a dermatologist, who took one look and informed her it was skin cancer.

A waitress has had her faith in humanity restored after receiving money enclosed in an apology letter from a customer who previously ‘miscalculated’ his tip to her.

Addressing the letter to a server called Tricia, one man explained how he had been to dinner in the restaurant she worked the previous Friday, with his wife, sister and brother-in-law.

As they were in a rush to see a show, he apparently ‘miscalculated’ his tip of $16.50 after receiving a bill for $132.30.

After discovering his mishap after checking his bank account, he felt incredibly guilty as Tricia’s service had been ‘perfect’ alongside the good food they were given.

Enclosing $15 in his gracious apology letter, he wrote: ‘I am so sorry – it was purely an oversight. As I said, the meal was great and your service was perfect.

‘Hopefully the $15 enclosed makes things right – I just hope it finds its way to you!’
