Despite abortion being legal in the UK since 1967 and the USA since 1973, the stigma around the medical procedure can still be tough to live with.
This week a social media campaign has tried to remove that stigma by asking women to #ShoutYourAbortion.
The debate was stirred when Republicans in the American government moved to suspend funding to Planned Parenthood, a family planning organisation.
Writer Lindy West coined the hashtag and wrote that the attempt to defund Planned Parenthood ‘relies on the assumption that abortion is to be whispered about.’
