There’s a scientific reason behind why you hate that fingernail-down-the-chalkboard sound so much

Remember that absolutely soul-crippiling sound of fingernails scraping a chalkboard?

Of course you do. Unless you’re young enough to have had whiteboards at school, that is.

But while it seems obvious that the sound itself is excruciating, it turns out there’s actually a scientific reason why we can’t stand the noise.

A group of researchers from the University of Cologne and the University of Austria believe it has something to do with the shape of the human ears and the way they have evolved.

They believe the ear amplifies sounds of different frequencies in a different way – and it might amplify the high pitch of the irritating chalkboard sounds more than other, more pleasant sounds.

In order to make the discovery, the researchers played fingernail-scraping clips to a group of volunteers.
