A new campaign is trying to give victims of domestic abuse a way to ask for help, without having to speak a word.

The Black Dot Campaign is a new initiative that’s encouraging anyone experiencing domestic abuse to draw a small black dot on the palm of their hand.

Its creator, a survivor of domestic abuse, hopes that by sharing the movement with as many people as possible, the dot will signal that the person wearing it is a domestic abuse victim, and cannot ask for help.

The campaign’s Facebook states: ‘This is a campaign… Read the full story

oakland zoo auctions off paintings by animals

Getting paid to work as a creative can be tough. Really tough.

You’ll probably end up selling out, and spend your days in recreations of your homeland, entertaining children and cutesy couples on dates.

But these animals prove that one day, you will make it. You can follow your dreams.

Oakland Zoo is finally letting its animals fulfill their creative potential, creating an online auction to sell the paintings created by their most talented residents.

Proceeds will go towards conservation, so you’ll get the pride of helping to protect animals, as well as supporting the work of struggling artists just trying to make it big.

Fifty Nerds of Grey is the sexy Twitter fiction you’ve been waiting for

Because nothing is sexier than Moss from the IT Crowd talking about operating systems. Nothing.

Some absolute genius has taken the clearly very unsexy book, 50 Shades of Grey (you might have heard of it. It’s a book and film franchise about contract negotiations and helicopters) and sexed it up. With the power of nerdiness.

And Richard Ayoade, the definitive sex symbol of the modern world.

50 Nerds of Grey is a Twitter feed that reimagines the exchanges between Ana Steele and Christian Grey, if Christian Grey was a self-professed nerd whose playroom contained plenty of Lego and Dr Who DVDs.

It’s brilliant.

In probably our favourite internet meeting real life news of the day, there’s now a play dedicated to one of the internet’s favourite stock photo tropes: women laughing while eating salad.

In case you’ve somehow managed to miss this phenomenon (where have you BEEN? A cave without access to Tumblr), here’s a brief recap.

Three years ago, the Hairpin shared a collection of stock photos of women eating salad alone and looking very happy about it, with no comment.

How many bananas would you have to eat to kill you?

‘Just say no’. Or actually don’t. Because bananas are a force for good

A theory has been doing the rounds for years that suggests too many bananas can kill you.

The theory comes from the notion that bananas are rich in potassium, and too much potassium is dangerous for humans.

The more extreme banana theorists believe that six is the absolute limit – seven tips us into the danger zone.

Others put a different number on it, but they still believe the banana to be a botanical berry with a licence to kill.

Yup, they really think that.

Happy Roald Dahl Day!

Today we celebrate the life and works of one of the greatest children’s authors in the world.

Whether you favour Fantastic Mr Fox or have a soft spot for The BFG, there’s no denying Roald Dahl’s unique and colourful style changed children’s literature forever.

And, while he also wrote successful screenplays and adult classics such as Tales Of The Unexpected, we love him most for the books he wrote for young readers.

So here’s our Roald Dahl quiz – when it comes to his work, are you a Matilda or a Twit?

There have been few authors who have captured children’s imaginations quite like Roald Dahl.

His dark humour and mischievous personality shone throughout his novels and he displayed a kind of writing style that few other authors managed to achieve – he didn’t treat his readers like they were children and he wasn’t scared of displaying a few of the harsher realities of life.

On what would have been Roald Dahl’s 99th birthday, we take a look at some of the worries he left us with after reading his most famous children’s stories.

1. That worms would get mixed in with your spaghetti

After Mrs Twit’s horrible trick, we always looked a little closer at the spaghetti dished up for dinner.

Remember these? (Picture: Ebay)

There’s some things only 00s kids have a special place in their hearts for.

It wasn’t always an easy time.

We were obsessed with the OC but had to wait a whole week to find out who Julie Cooper was screwing over and if Seth would say something non-geeky to Summer.

We wanted to be fashionable but disc-shaped belts were a thing and Paris Hilton was about as ‘hot’ as it got.

But some things never change.

If you were growing up in the 00s there was a new toy craze every week, not to mention new card games, must have dolls or latest hair style.

Here’s 19 things you had if you were a 00s kid.

birthday cake with candles and sparklers gif

The highlight of every parent’s year: celebrating the arrival of their child into the world.

But birthday celebrations aren’t all about presents and singing ‘Happy Birthday’. There’s loads of other stuff involved in throwing a children’s birthday party, with its own unique joys and challenges.

No matter the age or party theme, these are the 19 truths you’re going to have to face…

1. Sorting out the guest-list will be harder than any high stakes business negotiation you’ve ever seen

‘Yes darling, I know Emma’s a “poohead”. But her mum invited you to her birthday party, so she has to come to yours.’

2. The amount of consideration that will go into the party bags will be, quite frankly, insane

In the game of ‘how many tiny things can I fit into this tiny bag?’, you’re winning.

In terms of money and time spent, you’re running a major loss.

The internet is ruled by 90s kids, which is totally fine. Some of my best friends are 90s kids.

But the problem with 90s kids is they think the world began just after 11.59pm on December 31, 1989.

They have no notion that their decade might be eclipsed by another.

But you don’t have to go too far back to find a decade that wipes the floor with the 90s, and it’s a decade where you could wear anything out your front door and no one would laugh.

I’m talking about a little decade called the 1980s, and it kicks the 90s’ ass. Here’s how.

1. The 80s had Madonna, the 90s had Britney

Hatred of slurping and loud eating has a name: Misophonia

Misophonia final
Misophonia means ‘hatred of sound’ (Illustration by Liberty Antonia Sadler for Metro.co.uk)

Some of us find it a bit gross when people eat loudly over our shoulder. And everyone hates the sound of nails running down a blackboard.

But do these sounds make you feel panicked, disgusted – or so angry you feel you could physically hurt someone?

That’s the difference between just a bad day at the office and those who suffer from misophonia.

Misophonia literally means ‘hatred of sound’.

Sufferers have an adverse reaction to specific noises or sounds, known as ‘triggers’.

These can be things like eating noises (slurping, chewing, sucking), whistling, heels clacking on pavements, sniffling, or loud typing.

It’s a fact – the whole world is crazy for YouTube and its stars.

Gone are the days of settling down after school or work on the sofa to watch a daily show on TV – these days we’re more likely to log onto our lap tops to watch our favourite YouTube channel.

But what do they have that traditional TV and radio doesn’t? Well, most of all, it’s about the people.

Here’s 12 reasons we love YouTubers so much.

1. They are normal people

After all, we have now had cat cafes, owl cafes, cereal cafes, a porridge cafe – and there’s even talk of a blobfish cafe, which may or may not be a prank, it’s increasingly difficult to say.

Truth remains though that we really don’t have s*** on coffee with a side of crazy when it comes to Japan.

We love burgers. And we love roast dinners.

And now there’s a monster burger that combines the two.

In the cold light of day the hybrid looks pretty insurmountable.

But like most things, after a few pints on a Sunday evening we could probably go for it.

The beast of a burger was created by Englishman Michael Hewitt, manager of the Smokehouse BBQ restaurant in Wakefield, Yorkshire, as part of a food challenge which so far (unsurprisingly) every challenger has failed.

Estimated at around 5,000 calories – double the daily intake for a man – the burger is made from two 20oz burger patties and 2lbs worth of diced chicken breast smothered in mozzarella cheese and gravy, on top of an… Read the full story

Twinception: when twins have twins (Picture: Mashable)

Finding out you’re having twins can be a daunting prospect for any new mum.

But imagine if you found out you were pregnant with your second set.

Plus you’re also a twin yourself.

And your twin sister, who has twins, is also having more twins.

So many twins.

A pair of twin sisters from Utah, USA, have just found out exactly that.

Kerri Bunker and Kelli Wall are even due to give birth to their second sets of twins at the same time in March next year, which makes it even more like twinception.

The sisters both conceived their first set of fraternal twins using IVF.

Mr Tumble, Cbeebies
What are we going to do without Cbeebies? (Picture: BBC)

Picture this. Great Britain 2016. Brain dead adults now walk the earth without purpose. Unwashed, vacant and unable to communicate, they have no sense of who they are or where they come from.

Meanwhile, feral children stalk the streets in search of food. Clawing through bins and under sofas, fighting over stale rice cakes and long forgotten raisins.

CBeebies is apparently under threat of being axed by the BBC. There is already a petition against this decision with over 125,000 supporters.

This is what the future holds for us if we lose CBeebies.
