If you had to guess where Britain’s best takeaway was, you’d probably assume London?

manu_girl_tamarin.jpg10 incredible pictures from National Geographic's best photos of 2016

Actually, maybe Brighton? Or Newcastle? Or, I dunno, some fish and chip shop down in Cornwall?

But chances are, you wouldn’t say ‘Luton’.

Which is a shame, because that’s exactly where the Best Takeaway in Britain is after being crowned with the title at the 2016 British Takeaway Awards this week.

(Yes, you read that right – the 2016 British Takeaway Awards. It’s a thing. Allow it.)

It’s so easy to forget the love that your parents share when you’re so used to seeing them as mum and dad – your guardians who care for you and make sure you’re fed every evening.

You'll never guess where Britain's best takeaway is

But when Sydney chose to do an assignment on her parents, she learnt how her father really felt about her mother, after her dad explained it to her in great detail in a series of truly touching texts.

Nice, right? (Picture: Pantone)

In case you didn’t know, Pantone’s colour of the year is a big deal.

vagina.pngThe rise of labiaplasty is proof that sex education needs a vagina-focused update

The colour they pick sets the tone for the year ahead, predicting trends in fashion, interiors, advertising, and pretty much everything else involving pretty colours.

For 2016, Pantone shocked us all by choosing two colours – a soft pink and a soft blue, designed to represent a move towards gender fluidity.

And today they’ve announced that their colour for 2017 will be just as important and symbolic.

So, drum roll…

We all love a good prank. Placing a whoopie cushion under a chair, squeezing hair removal cream into the shampoo, putting fake tan in someone’s foundation – you get the drift.

Why taking medication for your mental health doesn't make you weak or inferior

But pretending you hit someone with your car – to your MUM?! We think we’ll pass.

Twitter user @IAmVinnie’s sister, however? She went for it. And the reaction she received was totally unexpected.

Let’s just say it looks as though her mother wasn’t new to the prank – or she’s gotten away with a couple of murders before.

Do you ever think about the one who got away?

No, not that guy/girl who glanced at you for a fleeting second at a Christmas school disco then went into a corner to snog someone else.

We’re thinking more platonic than romantic.

Did you have someone when you were younger who was your bestest bestest best friend? Of course you did.

But for some reason – or maybe for no reason whatsoever – you stopped hanging out.

Taking your child on their first amusement park ride is a pretty big deal. They’re either going to scream their heads off in total terror, or they’ll love it and want to hop back on the ride again and again.

But when Ryan Dunlap took his 1-year-old daughter Poppy on her first ride, Epcot’s Frozen Ever After ride at Walt Disney World, her reaction wasn’t quite what he was expecting – and he didn’t get to see it until it came to seeing the in-ride photo that was presented after the experience.

We need to open up about vulvae. (Picture: metro.co.uk)

When I was younger, I was incredibly insecure about the appearance of my vulva.

I had never heard people talking about labia. I didn’t really know what they were or why they were there. The actual anatomy of the vagina wasn’t brought up in my sex ed classes, so even the words ‘vulva’ and ‘labia’ weren’t in my vocabulary.

Whether you like it or not, abortion is still a massive taboo.

Tinder podcastTinder are launching a podcast and we're very intrigued

We’re lucky enough to live in a country where we have access to free and legal abortions, but others aren’t quite so fortunate.

Even in America, the laws vary from state to state and it’s quite concerning that their new president is staunchly pro-life.

Women who have had abortions are even receiving horrific abuse via social media – from people who are in no way affected… Read the full story

Ordering wine in a restaurant can be excruciating.

You know you like red wine – maybe even a Merlot, but you don’t really know enough to warrant going beyond the house offering. The sommelier, however, is trying to push you down the page because you’ve ordered a dish which is just perfect with an excruciatingly expensive bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. You can’t even pronounce it.

There’s a lot of weird stuff on Instagram. Sometimes, as you scroll through photos of adorable dogs that remind you of the fact your landlord won’t let you have pets and someone’s awful-looking home cooked meal that guaranteeds you’re never going to accept their dinner invite, you’ll wonder why you bother keeping the app.

However, sometimes you’ll scroll your way into something that’s hard to tear your eyes away from.

Like the account Rodrigo.Kauan, owned Rodrigo Fernandes.

Rodrigo, who comes from Londrina in Parana, Brazil and describes himself as ‘the mortal son of an eternal father’, likes posting photos of himself.

To be precise, he’s a fan of sharing photos of his abs with the world, almost exclusively through the medium of mirror selfies.

Three Lebanese women have launched an app called ‘harass tracker’ to help women who are suffering from street harassment.

The app works through women logging where, when and how they were harassed, so they can create a harassment map.

You'll never guess where Britain's best takeaway is

Which is pretty brilliant. Partially because it’s making women feel safer, but mostly because it’s an example of people taking street harassment seriously.

When you say the words ‘street harassment’ the first thing that happens is a chorus of voices telling you that you’re a miserable kill joy. ‘It’s a compliment!’ people tell you. ‘Men can’t do… Read the full story

Loneliness is possible even in a city of millions (Picture: Getty)

It can be quite scary to be on your own in a city like London.

There’s so much pressure – you have to be entirely accountable for yourself all of the time and you can’t afford to make any mistakes.

I don’t really have a support system in London so sometimes it feels like I don’t have a safety net – I often worry what would happen to me if I lost my job or couldn’t pay the rent.

I’m terrified of falling through the cracks somehow and ending up homeless and living on the streets.

This year was the year of rainbow food, extra protein and coconut water.

2016 hasn’t been great for genuinely exciting, tasty, grown-up offerings. But we’re now in December so all food trends have come to an end and we’re all starting to revert back to our gluttonous festive ways.

A black model recreated fashion campaigns to draw attention to the industry's lack of diversity

In fact, today is supposed to mark the ‘start of the Christmas binge’ – when all our healthy eating habits go out of the window and we start eating mince pies like they’re going out of fashion.

Christmas might not be quite what you imagined but it could get pretty close.

When I asked fellow parents of autistic children for their tips on how to get through Christmas with their sanity intact, a large proportion said, ‘drink a lot.’

Helpful as this suggestion might be for those who like a tipple, there are plenty of other ways to help make sure you all have a good festive season – even if the strongest thing you touch is orange juice.
