Our dream high street (Picture: World Book Day 2016)

Today is World Book Day, a time to celebrate the power of books.

Chances are, books had more impact on your life than you realise.

The books you read as a child were all stuffed full of hidden moral messages or life lessons, and even the books you read now are teaching you things that are more useful than most of the lessons you learnt at school (apart from the ones that taught you to read).

Here are some of the life lessons that we learnt from books.

Sometimes things just slip your mind.

Five-year-old Khloe Russell from Hemet, California, has suffered from a horrible runny nose for the last six months.

Although it wasn’t causing her any pain, she was constantly having to blow it. And it wasn’t pleasant.

‘About six months ago, her nose just started running out of this one side,’ Khloe’s mother, Katelyn Powell, told ABC7 News. ‘Green, green, green constantly and it stunk.’

Katelyn took her daughter to three different doctors to try and sort the problem – all three thought it was a sinus problem and prescribed antibiotics.

A picture of a California police officer and his new partner-in-training is melting hearts after it was shared on the Westminster Police Department’s Facebook page last week.

Three-year-old Tayden Nguyen was feeling sad after a tough first week at pre-school so his family arranged for him to meet one of his heroes – 26-year-old Officer Mike Gradilla.

‘This adorable little guy wanted to meet a police officer. His parents called WPD today saying their son was a big fan of law enforcement and asked if their son could meet an officer. Officer Gradilla was happy to oblige and spend some time with him ‪#‎cop4aday‬ ‪#‎kidsrock‬’ the… Read the full story

This story of a gran, a mum and a daughter who say they keep getting mistaken for sisters has gone viral after it appeared in several newspapers this week.

Mostly because people are throwing shade.

Gwen Slade, 65, from London, is mum to Jemima, 44, and gran to Lily, 16. Despite being generations apart, they wear the same dress size, have the same long blonde hair, and often wear the same outfits.

‘We’re constantly competing for who can wear a dress the best, and shock many people with the fact we can all wear the same outfit and… Read the full story

Remember back in the day when you considered getting a picture with your crush in the photo booth a key relationship milestone?

You know, before everyone was obsessed with selfies and Photoshop?

Then you’ll appreciate this cute, and slightly retro, proposal.

Elliot Amos and Ronak Darafshian met during freshers’ week at the University of South Wales, where Elliot, born in Llantrisant, was studying media while Ronak, from Surrey, was studying journalism.

Four years ago, on Valentine’s Day, the students went on their first date to a bowling alley in Cardiff Bay, where, like many young couples before them, they popped into a photo booth to get some pictures.

Elliot has kept the photos in his… Read the full story

We’re all different, every one of us – and it takes all sorts to make the world go round.

As such, there are a great many of us born with something dangling between our legs who don’t quite fit in to the stereotypes and outdated expectations of what makes a man.

Times are changing and those males in touch with their feminine side are far more accepted these days – but it can still be a bit of a struggle if you are the least laddish bloke that you know.

A lack of sleep can have a serious effect on your brain’s chemical balance in a similar way to cannabis, research from the University of Chicago discovered.

So there could be good reason for those horrendous stomach grumbles we experience every time we’ve had an extreme lack of sleep.

The researchers conducted a study on 14 men and women in their 20s, who were invited to spend two four-day sessions at the university’s clinical research centre.

They controlled the time in bed spent by the volunteers, making sure that they had around 8.5 hours of sleep a night on one visit. On another visit , they were only… Read the full story

Today is International School Meals Day.

If you only ever contour on the occasional night out when your face looks slightly rounder than normal, this probably isn’t for you.

But if you’re the type of girl to perfect the ultimate way to make your cheeks more prominent and shiny, there may be something to save you a little time during the process.

Tontouring (or tantouring, depending on where you’re looking).

Yes, it’s pretty much what it says on the tin.

It’s a semi-permanent method of contouring that means instead of using bronzer or the trusty contour stick, you use a self-tanner.

It’s applied where you’d normally contour – forehead, nose, cheeks and jawline, alongside anywhere else you want to add a bit of shade (facially).

Those faces (Picture: Joe Hennan/Twitter)

Today (March 3) is World Book Day, a day which seems to have divided parents into three very disparate camps.

The first are those parents who had their act together and worked with their little ones to come up with a homemade costume inspired by their favourite story.

The second were the parents who threw some money at the problem and went to the fancy dress shop.

And the third camp was made up of all those parents across the country who woke up in a panic and realised they had to come up with a brilliant literary costume in the two spare minutes sandwiched between breakfast and… Read the full story

An Aussie couple have issued the most self-aware RSVP cards yet, after deciding to hold their wedding abroad.

Michael and Wendy, who are from Melbourne, are getting married in China later this year.

They decided to have what they’re calling a ‘destination wedding’ because, while Michael is Australian, Wendy is from China and most of her family still live there.

Obviously, this means their guests will have to pay out to fly to China, as well as for gifts, outfits and all the general wedding paraphernalia.

Which is something the couple fully acknowledged with their personalised RSVP cards, one of which was shared by… Read the full story
