Redcoats – still going strong (Picture: Martin Godwin/Getty)

When Billy Butlin established the first of his holiday camps way back in 1936, he couldn’t have had any notion that it would still be going strong after all this time.

And with the iconic franchise celebrating its 80th birthday this year, it’s as good an excuse as any to take a look at those little things you’ll notice when you visit.

1. Nothing says ‘Welcome to your accommodation’ quite like folded elephant towels

Sun, sea, sand – well, two out of three ain’t bad (Picture: Getty)

Family holidays are a paradox.

You have to take another trip when you’re done to recover from the exhaustion of being away. And that’s when they go well.

Other times, the weather, the location and the sheer hell of multitasking with young children leads to the sorts of errors and calamities.

All of the stories below are true. Not all of them are mine. But a lot of them are.

Ah, Americans. They make perfect teeth look so easy, don’t they? But nobody tells you how long and painful the process of straightening your gnashers actually is, especially when you’re 13 and already have enough on your plate, like geography homework and sussing out whether Derek in 9C actually likes you or if he just fancies your best mate.

If you were unlucky enough to have to have braces in the noughties, here are 17 things you’ll definitely remember (because they are etched indelibly into your brain):

Being a parent is lovely when you don’t have children.

You get to live in a little fantasy bubble populated by clean and happy children, your household runs like a well oiled machine and your pre-baby body still has sex.

But that bubble will burst as soon as baby arrives and parenting turns from make-believe to just make do.

So just how does the reality live up to those probably frankly unrealistic expectations of yourself and your little one?

From birth to those tricky teenagers years and on to leaving home… GO:

Makeup shopping is probably something you should just do yourself.

Or, at least, if you’re going to send someone else, be very specific about what you want and ensure they’re familiar with concepts such as matte lipstick and eyelash glue in advance.

Don’t be this girl, who really didn’t think it through when she sent her poor, clueless, 26-year-old boyfriend out to pick up some beauty essentials for her.

Over the weekend, Imgur user and confused boyfriend in question Bluefiz shared screenshots of the text conversation that occurred after he was sent, totally unprepared, into the baffling world of the beauty aisle.

It’s fair to say, she probably… Read the full story

This teen girl had a lot to say about her BMI assignment (Picture: MacLeodCartoons/Facebook)

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a method often used to discern whether someone is a healthy body weight or not.

It’s a calculation of your size, taking into account your height and weight. However, it’s considered by many experts to be a crude and often unreliable measure. It doesn’t, for example, distinguish between fat and muscle.

But, don’t take our word for it. Because one Indiana teenager has explained exactly why the method is so outdated and unhelpful.

Asked to define BMI and then calculate her own for a homework assignment, the eighth-grade student (so, approx. 14-years-old) decided to school… Read the full story

In light of Transgender Day of Visibility, Transgender teens were using the hashtag #MomentsInTransition to celebrate their journey of transitioning.

But, the hashtag was so successful that it is still going strong, with teens sharing their ‘then and now’ photos with the world, as well as opening up about the mental health battles they have overcome whilst becoming the person they feel they are inside.

The posts are giving others insight into what goes on inside a person’s mind when they feel they are not who they’re meant to be.

The photos are truly uplifting and are being shared with pride, as a reminder of the journey they’ve faced, and their perfect end result.

Death. It’s a bit of a downer.

Nobody likes to consider their own mortality, and why would you?

Between work and family and buying loo roll there’s enough to think about without adding your inevitable death to the mix.

Yet for anyone waiting for an organ transplant, death is never far from your mind.

You are forced into a macabre, my-life-depends-on-someone’s-death circle of life, like The Lion King, as directed by Tarantino.

Two and a half years ago, I was stuck in this circle.

Holy cannoli! As Batman might have said, had he ever found himself in Sydney patisserie Pasticceria Caruso.

The Aussie bakery is in the business of churning out cannolis – Italian pastry tubes traditionally filled with sweet, rich ricotta or mascarpone cream – and makes around 400 a week.

But, their real showstopper is the ‘Bazooka Cannoli’, a giant pastry shell filled with 50 regular cannolis.

The Bazooka has been around since 2012, but it only exploded onto Instagram recently after pictures emerged from a baking class showing how it’s constructed.

Unless you and your friends were ridiculously well behaved in school, there’s no doubt you’ll have faced some sort of punishment during your years of education.

Whether it was because of your own behaviour or if a friend got you in trouble (which, let’s face it, has happened to the best of us), we all know that detention was the worst.

But can you even recall what it was that meant you spent an hour after school writing line after line describing what it was you did wrong? No?

Well, these guys can, and some of the reasons behind their punishments are pretty amusing – and totally stupid.

After one Reddit user asked the question: ‘What’s the stupidest thing you got in trouble for at school?‘, lots of other users were more than happy to spill the beans.

Well, they aren’t wrong…

The centre, which sits on 100 acres of peaceful green pastures, is a permanent and temporary home to rescued animals such as horses, cattle, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks and pigs.

There’s quite a lot of work to do day-to-day, so Phoenix likes to lend a hand.
