You guys. Prepare for a truly heartbreaking revelation from the world of animal science.

Your dog hates hugs. They only put up with it because you like hugs so much. Every time you hug your dog, you’re stressing him or her out and making him miserable.

We’re ruining our dogs’ lives. Through hugs.

Maybe we just love too much.

As Stanley Coren explains in Psychology Today, it seems very likely that when we hug a dog, we’re actually raising its levels of anxiety and stress.

Living with parasomnia feature Illustration_Liberty-Antonia-Sadler_Metro
(Illustration: Liberty Antonia Sadler)

For nearly 25 years I have known that sleep is my enemy, my own personal quirk to be lightly made fun of.

The local GP being called out in the middle of the night because I woke the house screaming is one of my earliest memories; warm milk and a book was the prescription then, today it’s Prozac, Clonazepam and therapy.

I was finally diagnosed with parasomnia – abnormal events that happen while a person is asleep, including nightmares, night terrors and sleep-walking – in 2015.

It means different things to different people and can be difficult to explain just how debilitating it makes life.

After all, sleep-walking… Read the full story

These are not onion rings. (Picture: Burger King/Twitter)

Calling all fans of chicken and fried food: Burger King is now making chicken rings.

What on earth are chicken rings, we hear you ask? Let us explain.

Burger King has brought back their popular chicken fries (strips of breaded chicken, perfect for dunking) after fans begged them all over social media.

But to shake things up a bit, they’ve also brought them back in ring form. So they look like onion rings, but they’re actually chicken.

To recap: all-white meat chicken coated in crispy breading in a circle shape. Easy enough to understand, but their onion ring appearance just keeps throwing us off.

Apple’s iPad is a wonderful thing. It can soothe the most terrible tantrum. It can help educate the most and least academic. And it can drive parents doo-lally.

Here are 15 things you only know if you’ve let the kids use your iPad.

1. The terror of iPad Rage

It’s real, and it’s worse than any tantrum you’ve ever seen before. Whether your child’s a toddler or a tween, that screen is more powerful than a spaceship’s tractor beam.

2. Why some app makers will be first up against the wall when the revolution comes

Who’s worse: the app makers whose apps are useless without in-app purchases? The ones whose apps demand kids watch age-inappropriate ads to generate… Read the full story

A blogger has recreated Kendall Jenner’s Calvin Klein underwear shoot to offer a different sort of provocative image to those that flood the media and our social media feeds.

After giving birth to her son eight years ago, Brenda DeRouen, now 26, from Texas, battled with body issues.

Pregnancy left her with stretch marks on her stomach. ‘For years I dealt with not loving myself. I was self-conscious in relationships and I hated my body,’ she explains on her blog Oh, Brenda!

But as she’s grown older, she’s become more confident and more accepting of the changes that come… Read the full story

Say farewell to cronuts and red velvet lattes – for now, anyway.

Because, a new incredibly creative food may be just to your liking.

A cheeseburger croissant. And yes, it does look way better than it sounds.

The dish itself includes a beef patty, American cheddar, onion, mustard and pickles, with the option to add bacon, all wrapped together tightly in a croissant ‘bun’.

Instagram Photo

Both a burger and a croissant, this new food-craze is the brainchild of a Sydney-based cafe called Piccolo Me – who are calling it ‘The Cheesy Frenchy’. It works, right?

We did ask them how many calories were in this thing: They haven’t calculated the calories, they said.

We’re guessing it’s not the healthy food market they’re aiming for.

Of course, Sydney’s a little bit far to travel – but what’s to stop you making one yourself?

In fact, why make one when you can just… Read the full story

The 13 worst things about going to the barbers
(Picture: Liberty Antonia Sadler for Metro.co.uk)

For women, having your haircut seems to be a wonderful thing.

For guys, it’s more akin to meeting a girlfriend’s parents for the first time.

Forced conversations, awkward silences and the constant feeling of being judged.

So if you’ve ever been to the barbers (which we assume most men over the age of five have) then you have probably gone through the following 13 delightful stages of having a stranger groom you.

1. You walk in to find one guy cutting hair and four other men waiting, even though it’s 3pm on a Tuesday.

2. No worries, you take a seat and make… Read the full story

Drink up. (Picture: Portobello Road Gin)

If there’s a show that’s best watched with a stiff drink by your side, it’s Game of Thrones.

Seriously. How else are you supposed to cope with all those surprise deaths? How else will you get through that title sequence?

Alcohol is entirely necessary. But if you don’t fancy sticking to a Cersei-approved glass of wine, there’s still a way to get gently tipsy while remaining within the Game of Thrones theme.

We are, of course, talking about Game of Thrones cocktails.

These ones have been created by London-based gin brand Portobello Road Gin, meaning that they combine two of the things we love most:… Read the full story

Boobs
But why? (Picture: Nordstrom)

Seriously, we don’t understand it.

We get that underboob is now a thing, along with side-boob, uni-boob and, y’know, basic boob.

But underboob bras to enhance your under-cleavage seems like a gap that didn’t need to be filled.

Sure, we can see people wearing them for sexy selfies. But, what happens when you want to wear it under your crop top? Are visible breast harnesses now a statement accessory? If so, do they come with diamante?

So many unanswered questions.

If you’re not a morning person, there’s no doubt you’ll seriously relate to this husky, who just doesn’t want to get up.

Well, it’s more so that he doesn’t want his human to get up. But either way, it’s most definitely most of us in the morning.

As the owner of the husky attempts to coax her son out of bed in time for school, the beautiful dog looks seriously grumpy because he was obviously extremely comfy.

He even grabs the covers back from his owner as she attempts to get her son out of bed – channeling every lazy teen ever.

Of course, school’s way more important than bed (sadly), and she wasn’t going… Read the full story

Nala is an American staffy cross who for two days cowered away in the corner of her cage after being abandoned by her owner.

Having been picked up after spending weeks living on the streets of Christchurch, New Zealand, Nala was taken in, terrified and traumatised, and placed in Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue shelter

According to the centre’s website, the shelter was an incredibly scary environment for her, and she had no idea how she was going to cope.

She kept very still, laying on a bed in her cage, looking distressed.

Today is International Guide Dogs Day – a day to celebrate man’s best friend and the work they do to make so many people’s lives a lot easier.

Here is why it is so important:

What do guide dogs do?

A guide dog is an assistance dog for people who are blind or visually impaired.  The International Guide Dog Federation provides a ton of information about guide dogs and how to get a guide dog throughout the world. Seeing dogs perform many tasks such as:

  • Help users to travel independently and safely giving freedom and confidence.

We’d like to preface this post by saying that every bulldog is beautiful. There are no losers here.

This weekend, Drake University in Iowa, USA, held its 37th annual Beautiful Bulldog pageant. The contest takes place every year and the winner gets to be the university’s track and field mascot for the new season.

Honestly, we don’t know what we’ve been doing with our lives. How did we miss the previous 36 years of beautiful bulldogs?

Anyway, back to this year’s competition and it was a newcomer that walked away with the crown. Vincent, a brown and white 60lb English bulldog,… Read the full story

why this woman's crop top selfie is so important
Crop tops are for everyone. (Picture: Instagram/dahs)

Just a reminder that there’s no such thing as a piece of clothing your body type is ‘banned’ from wearing – no matter what fashion mags say.

Crop tops are not just for people with six-packs and perfectly flat abs. They’re not just for teeny-tiny waistlines and visible hip bones.

Crop tops are for anyone who wants to wear them. And that’s exactly what Haddas Ancliffe – the 21-year-old blogger who got loads of love for sharing a photo of herself breastfeeding at a wedding – wants to show with her latest selfie, showing herself proudly rocking a… Read the full story
